1 Chegou aos ouvidos de Joabe que o rei estava a chorar e a lamentar-se por causa da morte de Absalão. 2 Quando o povo soube da profunda tristeza do rei, por causa da perda do filho, desapareceu a alegria que tinha marcado aquele dia de vitória, tornando-se em amargura para todos. 3 Toda a tropa regressou cabisbaixa à cidade, como se estivessem com vergonha e tivessem sido batidos na luta. 4 O rei cobria o rosto com as mãos e continuava chorando: "Ó meu filho Absalão! Ó Absalão, meu filho, meu querido filho!"

5 Joabe foi ter com o rei aos seus aposentos e disse-lhe: "Hoje salvámos a tua vida e a dos teus filhos, filhas, mulheres e concubinas. E tu tomas uma atitude destas, fazendo-nos até sentir envergonhados, como se tivéssemos cometido uma má ação. 6 Parece mesmo que amas os que te odeiam e odeias os que te amam. Aparentemente, nós nada valemos aos teus olhos. Se Absalão estivesse vivo e todos tivéssemos morrido, então sim, estarias feliz! 7 Peço-te que saias e vás felicitar as tropas; pois juro-te, diante de Senhor, que se não o fizeres, nem um só deles aqui ficará esta noite. E isto será muito pior para ti do que o mal que te tem acontecido a vida inteira." 8 O rei saiu de casa, foi sentar-se à entrada da cidade e quando se soube que o rei estava ali, as pessoas vieram ter com ele.

Entretanto, os israelitas que apoiavam Absalão tinham fugido para as suas casas.

9 Havia grande controvérsia por toda a nação e o povo perguntava: "Porque não tratamos de trazer de volta o rei? Foi ele quem nos salvou dos nossos inimigos, os filisteus. 10 Absalão, que nós consagrámos em lugar do pai, está agora morto. Vamos buscar David e fazê-lo de novo o nosso rei."

11 David enviou Zadoque e Abiatar, sacerdotes, dizer aos anciãos de Judá: "Por que razão são os últimos a restabelecer o rei? Todo o Israel está pronto menos vocês. 12 Vocês são meus irmãos, a minha própria tribo, a minha carne e meu sangue!"

13 Disse-lhes ainda que transmitissem a Amasa: "Sendo meu sobrinho, que Deus me castigue se não te nomear comandante do meu exército, em lugar de Joabe." 14 Então Amasa conseguiu convencer todos os chefes de Judá, os quais responderam unanimemente, mandando um recado ao soberano: "Volta para nós com os que estão contigo." 15 O rei partiu de regresso a Jerusalém.

Quando chegou ao rio Jordão, parecia que toda a população de Judá tinha vindo a Gilgal ao seu encontro para o escoltar atravessando o rio. 16 Simei, filho de Gera, de Benjamim, o homem de Baurim, correu na companhia da gente de Judá para dar as boas vindas ao rei David. 17 Um milhar de indivíduos da tribo de Benjamim estava com ele, incluindo Ziba, o servo de Saul, mais os quinze filhos de Ziba e vinte dos seus criados. Desceram à pressa até ao Jordão e chegaram à presença do rei. 18 Esforçaram-se prestavelmente no transporte de todo o pessoal da casa real e das tropas e ajudaram em tudo o que foi possível.

Quando foi a vez do rei passar, Simei prostrou-se perante ele 19 e rogou-lhe: "Ó rei, meu senhor, peço-te que me perdoes e esqueças a conduta perversa que tive quando deixaste Jerusalém. 20 Sei muito bem quanto pequei. É por isso que vim aqui hoje; fui a primeira pessoa de toda a tribo de José que te deu as boas vindas."

21 Abisai perguntou: "Não deverá Simei morrer, visto que amaldiçoou o rei ungido pelo Senhor?"

22 "Não quero que fales dessa maneira diante de mim!", exclamou David. "Este não deverá ser um dia de execuções. Eu tornei a ser rei de Israel!" 23 Depois, voltando-se para Simei, garantiu-lhe: "A tua vida será poupada."

24 Mefibosete, neto de Saul, saiu de Jerusalém para ir encontrar-se com o rei. Não tinha lavado os pés, nem a roupa que vestia, nem feito a barba, desde o dia em que o rei deixara Jerusalém. 25 "Porque é que não vieste comigo, Mefibosete?", perguntou-lhe o rei.

26 Mefibosete respondeu: "Ó meu senhor, meu rei, Ziba o meu criado enganou-me. Eu disse-lhe: ‘Sela o meu jumento para que possa ir com o rei.’ Pois como sabes, sou coxo. Mas Ziba caluniou-me. 27 Disse que eu recusara ir contigo. Tu és como um anjo de Deus, portanto, aquilo que decidires está certo. 28 Eu e os meus familiares só tínhamos o direito de esperar a morte da tua parte; em vez disso honraste-me, integrando-me entre os que comem à tua própria mesa! Por isso, como posso queixar-me?"

29 "Está bem", respondeu David. "A minha decisão é que tu e Ziba dividam a terra equitativamente entre os dois."

30 "Podes dar-lhe a terra toda", disse Mefibosete. "Eu já estou feliz que tenhas voltado!"

31,32 Barzilai, o gileadita, que tinha abrigado e dado de comer ao rei, durante o tempo em que esteve exilado em Maanaim, veio de Rogelim para acompanhar o rei na passagem do Jordão. Era um homem muito idoso, com 80 anos, mas gozava de um grande bem-estar.

33 "Passa comigo para o outro lado e vem viver para Jerusalém", disse-lhe o soberano. "Estarás ali sob os meus cuidados."

34 "Não, já sou demasiado velho para isso. 35 Estou com 80 anos e a vida para mim já não tem muitos atrativos. Comida e bebida deixaram de me interessar muito; as diversões não são coisa atrás das quais eu corra. Acabaria por me tornar nada mais do que um fardo para o meu senhor e rei. 36 A única honra que peço neste momento é a de poder atravessar o rio contigo! 37 Depois deixem-me voltar para a minha terra e morrer ali onde o meu pai e minha mãe jazem enterrados. Está aqui o meu filho Quimã. Ele que vá contigo e que receba todos os benefícios que queiras dar-lhe!"

38 O rei concordou: "Está bem. Quimã que me acompanhe e farei por ele tudo aquilo que queria fazer por ti."

39 Todo o povo atravessou o Jordão com o rei. David beijou e abençoou Barzilai que voltou para casa. 40 O rei continuou até Gilgal, levando consigo Quimã. Grande parte da população de Judá e metade de Israel estavam ali para o saudar.

41 No entanto, os homens de Israel lamentaram-se perante o rei pelo facto de somente a gente de Judá ter ajudado o rei e a sua casa no transporte através do rio Jordão. 42 "E que mal há nisso?", perguntaram os de Judá. "O rei é da nossa tribo. Por que razão haveriam de se sentir por isso? Nós não lhe pedimos nada em troca; o rei não nos forneceu nem concedeu nada em recompensa!"

43 "Há dez tribos em Israel", responderam os outros. "Temos dez vezes mais direitos em relação à pessoa do rei. Porque não nos convidaram? E lembrem-se duma coisa, nós fomos os primeiros a falar em restabelecer o nosso rei."

Continuaram a discutir, mas os homens de Judá acabaram por ter mais força nos seus argumentos.

11 And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, even to his house. 12 Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king? 13 And say ye to Amasa, Art thou not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of Joab. 14 And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as the heart of one man; so that they sent this word unto the king, Return thou, and all thy servants. 15 So the king returned, and came to Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to conduct the king over Jordan.

16 And Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite, which was of Bahurim, hasted and came down with the men of Judah to meet king David. 17 And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and his twenty servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the king. 18 And there went over a ferry boat to carry over the king’s household, and to do what he thought good. 24 And Mephibosheth the son of Saul came down to meet the king, and had neither dressed his feet, nor trimmed his beard, nor washed his clothes, from the day the king departed until the day he came again in peace. 25 And it came to pass, when he was come to Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said unto him, Wherefore wentest not thou with me, Mephibosheth? 26 And he answered, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me: for thy servant said, I will saddle me an ass, that I may ride thereon, and go to the king; because thy servant is lame. 27 And he hath slandered thy servant unto my lord the king; but my lord the king is as an angel of God: do therefore what is good in thine eyes. 28 For all of my father’s house were but dead men before my lord the king: yet didst thou set thy servant among them that did eat at thine own table. 31 And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim, and went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan. 32 Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old: and he had provided the king of sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man. 33 And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem. 34 And Barzillai said unto the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?*19.34 How…: Heb. 41 And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said unto the king, Why have our brethren the men of Judah stolen thee away, and have brought the king, and his household, and all David’s men with him, over Jordan? 42 And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us: wherefore then be ye angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the king’s cost? or hath he given us any gift? 43 And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than ye: why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king?
