1 Os fariseus ouviram dizer que Jesus estava a baptizar e a ganhar mais discípulos que João (embora de facto não era Jesus que baptizava, mas os seus discípulos).
3 Quando o Senhor constatou isso, deixou a Judeia e voltou para a província da Galileia.
4 Para isso, tinha de atravessar Samaria. Cerca do meio-dia, ao aproximar-se da localidade de Sicar, chegou ao poço de Jacob, no terreno que este dera a seu filho José. Cansado da longa caminhada, Jesus sentou-se junto ao poço.
7 Apareceu uma samaritana para tirar água, e Jesus pediu-lhe: Dá-me de beber.
8 (Os discípulos tinham ido à aldeia comprar comida.)
9 A mulher estava admirada, pois os judeus não comunicam com os samaritanos, e disse: Como, sendo tu judeu, me pedes de beber a mim, que sou samaritana?
10 Jesus respondeu: Se ao menos compreendesses o dom maravilhoso que Deus tem para ti e quem eu sou, serias tu a pedir-me que te desse água viva.
11 Mas tu não tens com que a tirar, tornou ela, e o poço é fundo. Onde ias buscar essa água viva? Além disso, serás maior que o nosso antepassado Jacob? Como poderás tu oferecer água melhor do que esta, que ele, os seus filhos e o seu gado beberam?
13 Jesus respondeu: As pessoas que bebem desta água depressa ficam outra vez com sede. Mas a água que eu lhes der torna-se numa fonte sem fim dentro delas, dando-lhes vida eterna.
15 Senhor, dá-me dessa água, para não sentir mais sede e não ter de vir aqui tirar água!
16 Vai chamar o teu marido, disse-lhe Jesus.
17 Não tenho marido.Jesus disse: É verdade, não tens marido.
18 Porque tiveste cinco maridos e nem sequer estás casada com o homem com quem vives agora.
19 Senhor, exclamou a mulher, deves ser profeta! Mas diz-me: porque é que vocês, judeus, teimam que Jerusalém é o único sítio de adoração? Para nós, samaritanos, esse sítio é aqui no monte Gerizim, onde os nossos antepassados adoravam.
21 Jesus esclareceu-a: Vem o tempo em que já não teremos que nos preocupar se o Pai deve ser adorado aqui ou em Jerusalém, mas sim, se a nossa adoração é espiritual e autêntica. Deus é Espírito; os que o adoram devem adorá-lo em espírito e em verdade. É assim que o Pai quer que o adoremos. Mas vocês samaritanos sabem bem pouco acerca dele, adorando-o às cegas, enquanto que nós, judeus, temos dele um conhecimento perfeito, pois é através dos judeus que a salvação vem ao mundo.
25 A mulher disse: Eu sei que há-de vir o Messias, chamado Cristo, e que quando vier nos explicará tudo.Então Jesus disse-lhe: Sou eu o Cristo.
27 Nesse momento chegaram os discípulos, que ficaram espantados ao encontrá-lo a falar com aquela mulher, mas ninguém lhe perguntou porquê.
28 A mulher deixou o balde junto ao poço e, voltando para a aldeia, disse a toda a gente: Venham ver um homem que me disse tudo o que eu fiz! Não será ele o Messias? Então o povo veio a correr da localidade para o ver.
31 Entretanto, os discípulos insistiam com Jesus para que comesse.
32 Não, disse-lhes. Eu tenho um alimento que vocês não conhecem.
33 E puseram-se a perguntar uns aos outros quem lhe teria trazido comida.
34 Jesus explicou: O meu alimento é fazer a vontade de Deus, que me enviou, e terminar a sua obra.
35 Pensam, porventura, que a ceifa só começará quando o Verão acabar daqui a quatro meses? Olhem à vossa volta! Em torno de nós amadurecem vastos campos, já prontos para a ceifa.
36 Os ceifeiros recebem o seu salário e o fruto que colhem são pessoas trazidas para a vida eterna. E que alegria, tanto daquele que semeia como daquele que colhe!
37 Pois é bem verdade que um semeia o que outro irá colher. Mandei-vos colher onde não semearam; outros tiveram o trabalho e vocês receberam a colheita.
39 Muitos dos habitantes daquela terra samaritana creram em Jesus, levados por aquilo que a mulher afirmara: Disse-me tudo o que fiz! Os que foram vê-lo junto ao poço pediram-lhe que ficasse na sua aldeia, e Jesus assim fez durante dois dias, o suficiente para que muitos outros cressem depois de o ouvirem.
42 Então disseram à mulher: Agora acreditamos porque nós próprios o ouvimos e não apenas pelo que nos contaste. É, de facto, o Salvador do mundo.
43 Depois de ter ficado ali dois dias, seguiu para a Galileia, embora ele próprio tivesse dito que um profeta tem honras em toda a parte menos na sua própria terra. Mas os galileus receberam-no de braços abertos, pois tinham estado em Jerusalém durante a festa da Páscoa e assistido aos seus milagres.
46 No decurso da sua deslocação através da Galileia, chegou à vila de Caná, onde tinha transformado a água em vinho. Enquanto ali esteve, um homem que morava na cidade de Cafarnaum, funcionário do governo e cujo filho estava muito mal, ouviu dizer que Jesus viera da Judeia e andava pela Galileia. Então foi a Caná e, encontrando Jesus, pediu-lhe que o acompanhasse a Cafarnaum e lhe curasse o filho que estava às portas da morte.
48 Jesus perguntou-lhe: Então nenhum de vocês acredita em mim a não ser vendo-me fazer milagres?
49 Mas o homem rogou-lhe: Senhor, vem já, antes que o meu filho morra.
50 Volta para casa porque o teu filho vai sobreviver. O homem, crendo em Jesus, voltou para casa.
51 Ainda ia a caminho, sairam-lhe ao encontro alguns servos seus com a notícia de que o seu filho já estava bom.
52 Perguntou-lhes quando fora que o jovem se sentira curado, e responderam: Ontem à tarde, por volta da uma hora, a febre desapareceu.
53 Então aquele pai compreendeu que isso sucedera no momento em que Jesus lhe dissera: O teu filho vai sobreviver. Ele e toda a sua casa creram.
54 Foi este o segundo milagre de Jesus na Galileia depois de ter vindo da Judeia.
1 When therefore the Lord knew, that the Pharisees had heardJesus, more disciples, is making and immersing, than John,
2 although indeed, Jesus himself, was not immersing, but his disciples,
3 he left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.
4 Now he must needs pass through Samaria.
5 He cometh, therefore, unto a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the parcel of ground which Jacob gave unto Joseph his son.
6 Now Jacobs fountain was there. Jesus, therefore, having become toil-worn with the journey, was sitting thus, upon the fountain. It was about the sixth hour.
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith unto herGive me to drink!
8 for, his disciples, had gone away into the city, that, food, they might buy.
9 The Samaritan woman, therefore, saith unto himHow dost, thou, being, a Jew, ask to drink, of me, who am, a Samaritan woman? for, Jews, have no dealings with Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered, and said unto herIf thou hadst known the free gift of God, and who it is that is saying unto thee, Give me to drink, thou, wouldst have asked him, and he would have given thee living water.
11 She saith unto himSir! not even a bucket, hast thou,and, the well, is, deep:Whence, then, hast thou the living water?
12 Art, thou, greater than, our father Jacob, who gave us the well,and, himself, out of it drank, and his sons, and his flocks?
13 Jesus answered, and said unto herWhosoever drinketh of this water, will thirst, again;
14 But, whosoever shall drink of the water which, I, will give him, in nowise shall thirst, unto times age-abiding,but, the water which I will give him, shall become, within him, a fountain of water, springing up unto life age-abiding.
15 The woman saith unto himSir! give me this water, that I thirst not, neither be coming hither to draw.
16 He saith unto herGo, call thy husband, and come hither!
17 The woman answered, and said unto him I have no husband. Jesus saith unto herWell, saidst thou, A husband, I have not;
18 for, five husbands, thou hast had,and, now, he whom thou hast, is not thy, husband: This true thing, hast thou spoken.
19 The woman saith unto himSir! I perceive that, a prophet, art, thou:
20 Our fathers, in this mountain, worshipped; and, ye, say, that, in Jerusalem, is the place, where, to worship, it behoveth.
21 Jesus saith unto herBelieve me, woman! There cometh an hour, when, neither in this mountain, nor yet in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father.
22 Ye, worship, that which ye know not; We, worship, that which we know; because, salvation, is, of the Jews.
23 But there cometh an hour, and, now, is,when, the real worshippers, shall worship the Father in spirit and truth; for, even the Father, is seeking, such as these, as his worshippers.
24 God is, spirit; and, they that worship him, in spirit and truth, must needs worship.
25 The woman saith unto himI know that, Messiah, cometh, who is called Christ,Whensoever, he, shall come, he will tell us, everything.
26 Jesus saith unto herI, that speak unto thee, am he.
27 And, hereupon, came his disciples, and they began to marvel, that, with a woman, he was talking. No one, however, saidWhat seekest thou? orWhy talkest thou with her?
28 The woman, therefore, left her water-vessel, and went away into the city, and saith unto the men
29 Come! see a man, that told me all things that ever I did: Can, this, be, the Christ?
30 They came forth out of the city, and were coming unto him.
31 In the meantime, the disciples were requesting him, sayingRabbi! eat.
32 But, he, said unto themI, have, food, to eat, of which, ye, know not.
33 The disciples, therefore, began to say, one to anotherHath anyone brought him, to eat?
34 Jesus saith unto themMy food, is, that I should do the will of him that sent me, and complete, his work.
35 Are, ye, not sayingYet, a fourmonth, it is, and, the harvest, cometh? Lo! I say unto youLift up your eyes, and gaze at the fields,that, white, are they unto, harvest. Already,
36 he that reapeth, receiveth, a reward, and gathereth fruit unto life age-abiding; that, he that soweth, together may rejoice, with him that reapeth.
37 For, herein, doth the saying, hold good,One, is the sower, and, another, is the reaper.
38 I, sent you forth, to be reaping that whereon, ye, have not toiled: Others, have toiled, and, ye, into their toil, have entered.
39 And, out of that city, many, believed on himof the Samaritans,by reason of the word of the woman in bearing witnessHe told me all things that ever I did.
40 When, therefore, the Samaritans came unto him, they went on to request him to abide with them; and he abode there two days.
41 And, many more, believed by reason of his discourse;
42 and, unto the woman, began to sayNo longer, by reason of thy talk, do we believe; for, we ourselves, have heard, and know that, This One, is, in truth, the Saviour of the world.
43 But, after the two days, he went forth from thence, into Galilee.
44 For, Jesus himself, bare witness, that, a prophet, in his own fatherland, hath not, honour.
45 So, when he came into Galilee, the Galilaeans welcomed him, having seen, all things, whatsoever he had done in Jerusalem during the feast; for, they also, went unto the feast.
46 So he came again into Cana of Galilee, where he had made the water, wine. And there was a certain courtier, whose son was sick, in Capernaum.
47 The same, hearing that Jesus had come out of Judaea into Galilee, came away unto him, and began requesting him, that he would come down and heal his son; for he was on the point of dying.
48 Jesus therefore said unto himExcept, signs and wonders, ye see, in nowise will ye believe.
49 The courtier saith unto himSir! come down, ere my child die!
50 Jesus saith unto himBe going thy way: thy son, liveth! And the man believed in the word which Jesus spake to him, and at once went his way.
51 And, when he was even now going down, his servants, met him, saying, that, his boy, was living.
52 So he enquired the hour, from them, when he began, to amend. They said, therefore, unto himYesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him.
53 So the father took note that it was, in that hour, wherein Jesus said unto himThy son, liveth! and he believed, he, and all his house.
54 Now, this again, as, a second sign, Jesus did, after coming out of Judaea into Galilee.
