1 Then Job answered:2 "Listen carefully to my words, and let this be your consolation.3 Bear with me, and I will speak, and after I have spoken, mock on.4 As for me, is my complaint against man? Why should I not be impatient?5 Look at me, and be appalled, and lay your hand upon your mouth.6 When I think of it I am dismayed, and shuddering seizes my flesh.7 Why do the wicked live, reach old age, and grow mighty in power?8 Their children are established in their presence, and their offspring before their eyes.9 Their houses are safe from fear, and no rod of God is upon them.10 Their bull breeds without fail; their cow calves, and does not cast her calf.11 They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance.12 They sing to the tambourine and the lyre, and rejoice to the sound of the pipe.13 They spend their days in prosperity, and in peace they go down to Sheol.14 They say to God, `ey say to God, "Depart from us! We do not desire the knowledge of thy ways.15 What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit do we get if we pray to him?'16 Behold, is not their prosperity in their hand? The counsel of the wicked is far from me.17 "How often is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out? That their calamity comes upon them? That God distributes pains in his anger?18 That they are like straw before the wind, and like chaff that the storm carries away?19 You say, `God stores up their iniquity for their sons.' Let him recompense it to themselves, that they may know it.20 Let their own eyes see their destruction, and let them drink of the wrath of the Almighty.21 For what do they care for their houses after them, when the number of their months is cut off?22 Will any teach God knowledge, seeing that he judges those that are on high?23 One dies in full prosperity, being wholly at ease and secure,24 his body full of fat and the marrow of his bones moist.25 Another dies in bitterness of soul, never having tasted of good.26 They lie down alike in the dust, and the worms cover them.27 "Behold, I know your thoughts, and your schemes to wrong me.28 For you say, `r you say, "Where is the house of the prince? Where is the tent in which the wicked dwelt?'29 Have you not asked those who travel the roads, and do you not accept their testimony30 that the wicked man is spared in the day of calamity, that he is rescued in the day of wrath?31 Who declares his way to his face, and who requites him for what he has done?32 When he is borne to the grave, watch is kept over his tomb.33 The clods of the valley are sweet to him; all men follow after him, and those who go before him are innumerable.34 How then will you comfort me with empty nothings? There is nothing left of your answers but falsehood."

1 Então em resposta Jó disse:

2 "O melhor consolo que vocês me podem dar

é escutar com atenção as minhas palavras.

3 Tenham paciência enquanto falo;

depois que eu terminar, vocês podem zombar de mim.

4 Não é de nenhum ser humano que me queixo

e é por isso que estou tão impaciente.

5 Se vocês olharem para mim,

porão a mão na boca, assustados.

6 Quando penso no que aconteceu, fico perturbado,

e o meu corpo todo treme.

7 "Por que será que os maus continuam vivos?

Por que chegam ricos à velhice?

8 Eles têm filhos e netos

e vivem para vê-los bem-crescidos ao seu redor.

9 Nada ameaça a segurança dos seus lares,

e Deus não os castiga.

10 O seu gado se reproduz sem problemas,

dando crias sem nunca abortar.

11 Os seus filhos correm como carneirinhos

e pulam de alegria;

12 eles cantam e se divertem ao som de pandeiros, liras e flautas.

13 Os maus têm sempre do bom e do melhor

e morrem em paz, sem sofrimento.

14 "No entanto, a Deus eles dizem:

‘Deixa-nos em paz;

não queremos saber das tuas leis.

15 Quem é o Deus Todo-Poderoso para que o adoremos?

Que adianta fazer orações a ele?’

16 Os maus dizem que progridem pelos seus próprios esforços,

mas eu não aceito o seu modo de pensar.

17 "Quando foi que se apagou a luz dos perversos?

Quantas vezes algum deles caiu na desgraça?

Será que Deus alguma vez ficou irado com eles e os fez sofrer?

18 Quando foi que ele os espalhou como a palha

ou como a poeira que é levada pela ventania?

19 "Vocês dizem que Deus castiga o filho

pelos pecados do pai.

Mas é o pai que deveria ser castigado

para que aprendesse a lição.

20 Que o pecador receba o seu próprio castigo,

que ele sinta o peso da ira do Todo-Poderoso!

21 Mas, se ele já está morto,

se já está no outro mundo,

que lhe importa que a sua família sofra?

22 Por acaso, alguém pode dar lições ao Todo-Poderoso,

que julga até os seres celestiais?

23 "Alguns homens levam uma vida feliz e tranquila

e morrem ricos,

24 com saúde e cheios de força.

25 Outros, ao contrário, nunca provaram um momento de felicidade

e morrem com o coração cheio de amargura.

26 Mas uns e outros acabam morrendo,

são sepultados e ficam cobertos de vermes.

27 "Eu conheço os pensamentos de vocês

e sei que pensam mal de mim.

28 Vocês perguntam:

‘Onde está agora a casa daquele grande homem

que vivia uma vida de pecado?’

29 "Será que vocês não têm conversado com pessoas que viajam?

Vocês não têm ouvido as suas histórias?

30 Essas pessoas dizem que, quando Deus fica irado e castiga,

o homem mau sempre escapa.

31 Ninguém o acusa das maldades que comete;

ninguém o faz pagar pelos seus atos.

32 Ele é levado para o cemitério

e posto numa sepultura bem-guardada.

33 Milhares de pessoas acompanham o corpo,

e até a terra que o cobre é leve.

34 "Meus amigos, as suas consolações são vazias;

tudo o que vocês dizem é mentira."
