1 "Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold which they refine.2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and copper is smelted from the ore.3 Men put an end to darkness, and search out to the farthest bound the ore in gloom and deep darkness.4 They open shafts in a valley away from where men live; they are forgotten by travelers, they hang afar from men, they swing to and fro.5 As for the earth, out of it comes bread; but underneath it is turned up as by fire.6 Its stones are the place of sapphires, and it has dust of gold.7 "That path no bird of prey knows, and the falcon's eye has not seen it.8 The proud beasts have not trodden it; the lion has not passed over it.9 "Man puts his hand to the flinty rock, and overturns mountains by the roots.10 He cuts out channels in the rocks, and his eye sees every precious thing.11 He binds up the streams so that they do not trickle, and the thing that is hid he brings forth to light.12 "But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?13 Man does not know the way to it, and it is not found in the land of the living.14 The deep says, `It is not in me,' and the sea says, `It is not with me.'15 It cannot be gotten for gold, and silver cannot be weighed as its price.16 It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, in precious onyx or sapphire.17 Gold and glass cannot equal it, nor can it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold.18 No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; the price of wisdom is above pearls.19 The topaz of Ethiopia cannot compare with it, nor can it be valued in pure gold.20 "Whence then comes wisdom? And where is the place of understanding?21 It is hid from the eyes of all living, and concealed from the birds of the air.22 Abaddon and Death say, `e have heard a rumor of it with our ears.'23 "God understands the way to it, and he knows its place.24 For he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees everything under the heavens.25 When he gave to the wind its weight, and meted out the waters by measure;26 when he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder;27 then he saw it and declared it; he established it, and searched it out.28 And he said to man, `ehold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.'+"

1 Há minas de onde se tira a prata,

há lugares onde se refina o ouro.

2 O ferro é tirado da terra,

e das pedras se derrete o cobre.

3 Os mineiros levam luz para debaixo da terra;

eles exploram lugares profundos

e ali, na escuridão, procuram minérios.

4 Longe das cidades,

em lugares por onde ninguém passa,

eles abrem os poços das minas.

E trabalham na solidão,

pendurados e balançando de um lado para outro.

5 Por cima deles, a terra produz trigo

e por baixo está toda rasgada e esmigalhada.

6 As suas pedras contêm safiras,

e no seu pó se encontra ouro.

7 As águias não veem o caminho que desce para as minas,

e os falcões também não o conhecem.

8 Os leões e outros animais ferozes

nunca descem por esse caminho.

9 Os homens cavam as rochas mais duras

e cortam as montanhas até o chão.

10 Eles furam túneis nas pedras,

com olhos abertos para tudo o que é precioso.

11 Eles cavam até chegar às nascentes dos rios

e trazem para a luz o que estava escondido.

12 Mas onde pode ser achada a sabedoria?

Em que lugar está a inteligência?

13 Os seres humanos não conhecem o valor da sabedoria

e não a encontram neste mundo.

14 O Oceano afirma: "Aqui não está",

e o Mar diz: "Aqui também não."

15 Ela não pode ser comprada com ouro,

nem trocada por prata.

16 Não se compra a sabedoria com o ouro mais puro,

nem com pedras preciosas, como a ágata ou a safira.

17 Ela vale mais do que o ouro ou o vidro;

não se pode trocá-la por joias de ouro puro.

18 Do coral e do cristal nem se fala;

a sabedoria é mais valiosa do que as pérolas.

19 O topázio da Etiópia não se compara com ela;

e ela não pode ser comprada com o ouro mais puro.

20 De onde vem, então, a sabedoria?

Em que lugar está a inteligência?

21 Nenhum ser vivo pode vê-la,

nem mesmo as aves que voam no céu.

22 Até a Destruição e a Morte dizem:

"Nós apenas ouvimos falar dela."

23 Só Deus conhece o caminho;

só ele sabe onde está a sabedoria

24 porque a sua vista alcança os lugares mais distantes do mundo;

ele vê tudo o que acontece aqui na terra.

25 Quando Deus regulou a força dos ventos

e marcou o tamanho do mar;

26 quando decidiu onde a chuva devia cair

e por onde a tempestade devia passar;

27 foi então que ele viu a sabedoria,

e a examinou, e aprovou.

28 E ele disse aos seres humanos:

"Para ser sábio, é preciso temer o Senhor;

para ter compreensão, é necessário afastar-se do mal."
