1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind:2 "Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?3 Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me.4 "Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.5 Who determined its measurements--surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?6 On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone,7 when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?8 "Or who shut in the sea with doors, when it burst forth from the womb;9 when I made clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band,10 and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors,11 and said, `d said, "Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed'?12 "Have you commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dawn to know its place,13 that it might take hold of the skirts of the earth, and the wicked be shaken out of it?14 It is changed like clay under the seal, and it is dyed like a garment.15 From the wicked their light is withheld, and their uplifted arm is broken.16 "Have you entered into the springs of the sea, or walked in the recesses of the deep?17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you, or have you seen the gates of deep darkness?18 Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth? Declare, if you know all this.19 "Where is the way to the dwelling of light, and where is the place of darkness,20 that you may take it to its territory and that you may discern the paths to its home?21 You know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!22 "Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail,23 which I have reserved for the time of trouble, for the day of battle and war?24 What is the way to the place where the light is distributed, or where the east wind is scattered upon the earth?25 "Who has cleft a channel for the torrents of rain, and a way for the thunderbolt,26 to bring rain on a land where no man is, on the desert in which there is no man;27 to satisfy the waste and desolate land, and to make the ground put forth grass?28 "Has the rain a father, or who has begotten the drops of dew?29 From whose womb did the ice come forth, and who has given birth to the hoarfrost of heaven?30 The waters become hard like stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.31 "Can you bind the chains of the Plei'ades, or loose the cords of Orion?32 Can you lead forth the Maz'zaroth in their season, or can you guide the Bear with its children?33 Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you establish their rule on the earth?34 "Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that a flood of waters may cover you?35 Can you send forth lightnings, that they may go and say to you, `d say to you, "Here we are'?36 Who has put wisdom in the clouds, or given understanding to the mists?37 Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can tilt the waterskins of the heavens,38 when the dust runs into a mass and the clods cleave fast together?39 "Can you hunt the prey for the lion, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,40 when they crouch in their dens, or lie in wait in their covert?41 Who provides for the raven its prey, when its young ones cry to God, and wander about for lack of food?

1 Depois disso, do meio da tempestade, o Senhor deu a Jó a seguinte resposta:

2 "As suas palavras só mostram a sua ignorância;

quem é você para pôr em dúvida a minha sabedoria?

3 Mostre agora que é valente

e responda às perguntas que lhe vou fazer.

4 "Onde é que você estava quando criei o mundo?

Se você é tão inteligente, explique isso.

5 Você sabe quem resolveu qual seria o tamanho do mundo

e quem foi que fez as medições?

6 Em cima de que estão firmadas as colunas que sustentam a terra?

Quem foi que assentou a pedra principal do alicerce do mundo?

7 Na manhã da criação, as estrelas cantavam em coro,

e os servidores celestiais soltavam gritos de alegria.

8 "Quando o Mar jorrou do ventre da terra,

quem foi que fechou os portões para segurá-lo?

9 Fui eu que cobri o Mar com as nuvens

e o envolvi com a escuridão.

10 Marquei os seus limites

e fechei com trancas as suas portas.

11 E eu lhe disse: ‘Você chegará até este ponto

e daqui não passará.

As suas altas ondas pararão aqui.’

12 "Jó, alguma vez na sua vida você ordenou que viesse a madrugada

e assim começasse um novo dia?

13 Você alguma vez mandou que a luz se espalhasse sobre a terra,

sacudindo os perversos e os expulsando dos seus esconderijos?

14 A luz do dia mostra as formas das montanhas e dos vales,

como se fossem as dobras de um vestido

ou as marcas de um sinete no barro.

15 Essa luz é clara demais para os perversos

e os impede de praticar a violência.

16 "Jó, você já visitou as nascentes do mar?

Já passeou pelo fundo do oceano?

17 Alguém já lhe mostrou os portões do mundo dos mortos,

aquele mundo de escuridão sem fim?

18 Você tem alguma ideia da largura da terra?

Responda, se é que você sabe tudo isso.

19 "De onde vem a luz,

e qual é a origem da escuridão?

20 Você sabe mostrar a elas até onde devem chegar

e depois fazer com que voltem outra vez ao ponto de partida?

21 Sim, você deve saber, pois é bem idoso

e já havia nascido quando o mundo foi criado…

22 "Você alguma vez visitou os depósitos

onde eu guardo a neve e as chuvas de pedra,

23 que ficam reservadas para tempos de sofrimento

e para dias de lutas e de guerras?

24 Você já esteve no lugar onde nasce o sol

ou no ponto onde começa a soprar o vento leste?

25 "Quem foi que abriu um canal para deixar cair os aguaceiros

e marcou o caminho por onde a tempestade deve passar?

26 Quem faz a chuva cair no deserto,

em lugares onde ninguém mora?

27 Quem rega as terras secas e despovoadas,

fazendo nascer nelas o capim?

28 Será que a chuva e o orvalho têm pai?

29 E quem é a mãe do gelo e da geada,

30 que faz com que as águas virem pedra

e que o mar fique coberto por uma camada de gelo?

31 "Será que você pode amarrar com uma corda as estrelas das Sete-Cabrinhas

ou soltar as correntes que prendem as Três-Marias?

32 Você pode fazer aparecer a estrela-d'alva,

ou guiar a Ursa Maior e a Ursa Menor?

33 Você conhece as leis que governam o céu

e sabe como devem ser aplicadas na terra?

34 "Será que a sua voz pode chegar até as nuvens

e mandar que caia tanta chuva, que você fique coberto por um dilúvio?

35 Você pode fazer com que os raios apareçam

e venham dizer-lhe: ‘Estamos às suas ordens?’

36 Quem deu sabedoria às aves,

como o íbis, que anuncia as enchentes do rio Nilo,

ou como o galo, que canta antes da chuva?

37 Quem é capaz de contar as nuvens?

Quem pode derramar a sua água em forma de chuva,

38 que faz o pó virar barro,

ligando os torrões uns aos outros?

39 "Será que é você quem dá de comer às leoas

e mata a fome dos leõezinhos,

40 quando estão escondidos nas suas covas

ou ficam de tocaia nas moitas?

41 Quem é que alimenta os corvos,

quando andam de um lado para outro com fome,

quando os seus filhotes gritam a mim pedindo comida?
