1 Pois a prata tem as suas minas, E o ouro que se refina, o seu lugar.2 O ferro tira-se da terra, E da pedra se funde o cobre.3 O homem põe termo às trevas E até os últimos confins ele explora As pedras ocultas na escuridão e na sombra da morte.4 Abre um poço muito por baixo da habitação humana; São esquecidos dos que andam em cima; Longe dos homens ficam pendentes, e oscilam de um para o outro lado.5 Quanto à terra, dela procede o pão: E por baixo está revolta como pelo fogo.6 As suas pedras são o lugar de safiras, Onde se acham também grãos de ouro.7 Vereda é essa que a ave de rapina ignora, E que o olho do milhafre jamais viu:8 As altivas bestas feras não a pisam, Nem por ela passa o leão feroz.9 Estende a sua mão contra a pederneira, Transtorna os montes desde as suas raízes.10 Corta galerias nas pedras, E os seus olhos vêem tudo o que há de precioso.11 Tapa os veios de água para que não gotejem, E traz à luz o que está escondido.12 Mas onde se achará a sabedoria? E onde está o lugar do entendimento?13 O homem não conhece o preço dela, Nem se acha ela na terra dos viventes.14 O abismo diz: Ela não está em mim; E o mar diz: Ela não está comigo.15 Ela não se poderá obter por ouro fino, Nem se passará prata em câmbio dela.16 O seu valor não poderá ser determinado pelo ouro de Ofir, Nem pelo precioso ônix, nem pela safira.17 Não se lhe poderá igualar o ouro ou o vidro; Nem se darão em troco dela vasos de ouro fino.18 Não se fará menção de coral nem de cristal: Na verdade a sabedoria vale mais que as pérolas.19 Não se lhe igualará o topázio da Etiópia, Nem será o seu valor determinado pelo ouro puro.20 Donde, pois, vem a sabedoria? Onde está o lugar do entendimento,21 Visto que está escondida aos olhos de todos os viventes, E oculta às aves do céu?22 A Perdição e a Morte dizem: Com os nossos ouvidos ouvimos um rumor dela.23 Deus é quem entende o seu caminho, E é ele quem sabe o lugar dela.24 Pois ele perscruta até as extremidades da terra, E vê tudo o que há debaixo do céu.25 Quando regulou o peso do vento, E fixou a medida das águas:26 Quando decretou leis para a chuva, E caminho para o relâmpago do trovão;27 Então viu a sabedoria e a manifestou, Estabeleceu-a, esquadrinhou-a mesmo.28 E disse ao homem: Eis que o temor do Senhor é a sabedoria; E o apartar-se do mal é o entendimento.

1 Silver hath beginnings of its veins, and gold hath a place wherein it is melted.2 Iron is taken out of the earth, and stone melted with heat is turned into brass.3 He hath set a time for darkness, and the end of all things he considereth, the stone also that is in the dark and the shadow of death.4 The flood divideth from the people that are on their journey, those whom the food of the needy man hath forgotten, and who cannot be come at.5 The land, out of which bread grew in its place, hath been overturned with fire.6 The stones of it are the place of sapphires, and the clods of it are gold.7 The bird hath not known the path, neither hath the eye of the vulture beheld it.8 The children of the merchants have not trodden it, neither hath the lioness passed by it.9 He hath stretched forth his hand to the flint, he hath overturned mountains from the roots.10 In the rocks he hath cut out rivers, and his eye hath seen every precious thing.11 The depths also of rivers he hath searched, and hidden things he hath brought forth to light.12 But where is wisdom to be found, and where is the place of understanding?13 Man knoweth not the price thereof, neither is it found in the land of them that live in delights.14 The depth saith: It is not in me: and the sea saith: It is not with me.15 The finest gold shall not purchase it, neither shall silver be weighed in exchange for it16 It shall not be compared with the dyed colours of India, or with the most precious stone sardonyx, or the sapphire.17 Gold or crystal cannot equal it, neither shall any vessels of gold be changed for it.18 High and eminent things shall not be mentioned in comparison of it: but wisdom is drawn out of secret places.19 The topaz of Ethiopia shall not be equal to it, neither shall it be compared to the cleanest dyeing.20 Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?21 It is hid from the eyes of all living. and the fowls of the air know it not.22 Destruction and death have said: With our ears we have heard the fame thereof.23 God understandeth the way of it, and he knoweth the place thereof.24 For he beholdeth the ends of the world: and looketh on all things that are under heaven.25 Who made a weight for the winds and weighed the waters by measure.26 When he gave a law for the rain, and a way for the sounding storms.27 Then he saw it, and declared, and prepared, and searched it.28 And he said to man: Behold the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom: and to depart from evil, is understanding.
