1 Os habitantes de Jerusalém constituíram rei em lugar dele a Acazias, seu filho mais moço; porque a tropa que veio com os árabes ao arraial, tinha matado a todos os seus irmãos mais velhos. Assim reinou Acazias, filho de Jorão, rei de Judá.2 Tinha Acazias quarenta e dois anos quando começou a reinar, e reinou um ano em Jerusalém. Sua mãe chamava-se Atália, filho de Onri.3 Também este andou nos caminhos da casa de Acabe, porque sua mãe era quem o aconselhava a que procedesse iniquamente.4 Fez o mal à vista de Jeová, como fez a casa de Acabe; porque eles lhe serviam de conselheiros depois da morte de seu pai, para a sua perdição.5 Também andou segundo os conselhos dele, e foi a Ramote-Gileade com Jorão, filho de Acabe, rei de Israel, a fazer guerra contra Hazael, rei da Síria; e os siros feriram a Jorão.6 Voltou para se curar em Jezreel das feridas que lhe fizeram em Ramá, quando ele pelejava contra Hazael, rei da Síria. Azarias filho de Jorão, rei de Judá, desceu para visitar a Jorão, filho de Acabe, em Jezreel, porque estava doente.7 Por vontade de Deus foi que Acazias para a sua ruína visitou a Jorão; pois, quando chegou, saiu com Jorão contra Jeú, filho de Ninsi, a quem Jeová tinha designado para exterminar a casa de Acabe.8 Ao executar Jeú juízo contra a casa de Acabe, achou os príncipes de Judá e os filhos dos irmãos de Acazias, que o serviam, e os matou.9 Buscou a Acazias; alcançaram-no (ora se escondia Acazias em Samaria), trouxeram-no a Jeú e mataram-no; então sepultaram-no, pois disseram: Ele é filho de Josafá, que buscou a Jeová de todo o seu coração. A casa de Acazias não teve forças para reter o reino.10 Vendo Atália, mãe de Acazias, que seu filho era morto, levantou-se e destruiu toda a estirpe real da casa de Judá.11 Mas Josebate, filha do rei, tomou a Joás, filho de Acazias, e o furtou dentre os filhos do rei que foram mortos, e o escondeu com a sua ama no quarto de dormir. Assim Josebate, filha do rei Jorão, mulher do sacerdote Joiada (pois era ela irmã de Acazias), o escondeu de Atália, de modo que ela não o matou.12 Joás esteve seis anos com eles escondido na casa de Deus; e Atália reinou sobre a terra.

1 The people of Jerusalem made Jehoram’s youngest son Ahaziah king in his place, because the raiders who came to the camp with the Arabs had killed all the older sons. So Jehoram’s son Ahaziah became king of Judah.2 Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he began to rule. He ruled for one year in Jerusalem. His mother was Athaliah, the granddaughter of Omri.3 Ahaziah also followed the ways of Ahab’s family, because his mother gave him advice that led him to sin.4 He did what Jehovah considered evil the same as Ahab’s family had done. After his father died, they advised him to do what Ahab’s family had done. They did this to destroy him.5 He followed their advice. He joined King Joram of Israel in a war against King Hazael of Syria. The armies clashed at Ramoth in Gilead, and Joram was wounded in battle.6 He returned to the city of Jezreel to recover from his wounds. Ahaziah went there to visit him.7 God used this visit to Joram to bring about Ahaziah’s downfall. While Ahaziah was there, a man named Jehu confronted him and Joram. Jehu was the son of Nimshi, whom Jehovah chose to destroy the dynasty of Ahab.8 Jehu carried out God’s sentence on the dynasty. He came across a group made up of Judean leaders and of Ahaziah’s nephews that had accompanied Ahaziah on his visit. Jehu killed them all.9 A search was made for Ahaziah. He was found hiding in Samaria. They took him to Jehu and put him to death. But they did bury his body out of respect for his grandfather King Jehoshaphat, who had done all he could to serve Jehovah. No member of Ahaziah’s family was left who could rule the kingdom.10 When King Ahaziah’s mother Athaliah learned of her son’s murder, she gave orders for all the members of the royal family of Judah to be killed.11 Ahaziah had a half sister, Jehosheba, who was married to a priest named Jehoiada. She secretly rescued one of Ahaziah’s sons, Joash, took him away from the other princes who were about to be murdered. She hid him and a nurse in a bedroom at the Temple. By keeping him hidden, she saved him from death at the hands of Athaliah.12 For six years he remained there in hiding, while Athaliah ruled as queen.
