1 Ai da coroa pretensiosa dos embriagados de Efraim e da flor murcha que faz ostentação de seu ornato, dominando o vale fértil de homens vencidos pelo vinho.2 Eis que vem, por ordem do Senhor, um homem forte e poderoso como chuva de pedras, um furacão destruidor. Como trombas de água que se abatem com violência, precipita {tudo} por terra.3 Será pisada aos pés a coroa pretensiosa dos embriagados de Efraim,4 e a flor murcha que faz ostentação de seu ornato, dominando o vale fértil. Será como o figo prematuro, antes do verão, que a gente vê, logo colhe, e apenas o tem na mão, já o devora.5 Naquele dia o Senhor dos exércitos será uma coroa resplandecente, um diadema esplêndido para o resto do seu povo,6 um espírito de justiça para o juiz que faz parte do tribunal, e de valentia, para aqueles que rechaçam às portas o inimigo.7 Mas também estes titubeiam sob o efeito do vinho, alucinados pela bebida; sacerdotes e profetas cambaleiam na bebedeira. Estão afogados no vinho, desnorteados pela bebida, perturbados em sua visão, vacilando em seus juízos.8 Todas as mesas estão cobertas, de asqueroso vômito, não há sequer um lugar limpo.9 A quem pretende ele ensinar a sabedoria? A quem quer fazer compreender as revelações? A meninos apenas desmamados que acabam de deixar o seio?10 E ordem sobre ordem, ordem sobre ordem, norma sobre norma, norma sobre norma, ora para cá, ora para lá!11 Pois bem, será por gente que balbucia, será numa língua bárbara que o Senhor falará a esse povo!12 Por mais que se lhes dissesse: Eis o repouso, deixai repousar aquele que está fatigado, é o momento de estarem calmos, eles nada quiseram ouvir.13 Por isso a palavra de Deus lhes vai dizer: Ordem sobre ordem, ordem sobre ordem, norma sobre norma, norma sobre norma, ora para cá, ora para lá! A fim de que caiam de costas e se despedacem, e sejam apanhados no laço e presos.14 Escutai, pois, gracejadores, a palavra do Senhor, vós que governais esse povo que está em Jerusalém.15 Fizemos um pacto com a morte, dizeis vós, uma convenção com a morada dos mortos; a inundação passará sem atingir-nos porque fizemos da mentira um abrigo, e da perfídia um refúgio.16 Por isso o Senhor Deus lhes diz: Eu coloquei em Sião uma pedra, um bloco escolhido, uma pedra angular preciosa, de base: quem confiar nela não tropeçará.17 Tomarei o direito por fio de prumo e, por nível, a justiça. O granizo derrubará o abrigo da mentira, e as águas inundarão o refúgio ilusório.18 Vosso pacto com a morte será quebrado, vosso entendimento com a morada dos mortos não subsistirá; quando a onda transbordante passar, sereis por ela esmagados.19 Cada vez que ela passar, arrebatar-vos-á, porque ela passará cada manhã {de dia e de noite}. E aí só haverá terror na interpretação de oráculos.20 Porque o leito será muito curto para que alguém se deite nele, e o cobertor muito estreito para que alguém se cubra com ele.21 Porque o Senhor se levantará como no monte Perasim e fremirá como no vale de Gabaon para concluir sua obra, sua obra singular, para executar seu trabalho, seu trabalho inaudito.22 Assim, pois, cessai de zombar para que vossos grilhões não se apertem, porque eu ouvi uma sentença de ruína por ordem do Senhor dos exércitos {contra toda a terra}.23 Aplicai os ouvidos para ouvir minha voz, sede atentos para escutar minha palavra!24 Porventura o trabalhador trabalha sempre {para semear}? Cava e amanha incessantemente o seu terreno?25 Acaso, depois de ter aplainado a superfície, não espalhará aí a nigela e semeará o cominho? Ele lançará aí o trigo e a cevada, e a espelta a eito.26 É o seu Deus quem o instruiu, quem lhe ensinou o costume.27 Pois não será necessário pisar a nigela com a grade, nem passar a roda do carro sobre o cominho; mas a nigela será batida com um pau e o cominho com a vara.28 E preciso triturar o trigo? Não, não se bate indefinidamente. Uma vez que sobre ele passe a roda do carro, joeira-se sem triturá-lo.29 Isso também vem do Senhor: admirável é seu conselho e alta a sua sabedoria.

1 Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim and to the open flower of the beauty of their glory which [is] upon the head of the fertile valley of those that are overcome with wine!2 Behold, the Lord has a mighty and strong one [who] as a tempest of hail [and] a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing shall cast down to the earth with the hand.3 The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet:4 And the fading flower of the beauty of their glory, which [is] upon the head of the fertile valley, shall be as the early fig, which [comes] first [before the other fruits] of the summer; which [when] he that looks upon it sees it; [as soon as he] has it in his hand, he eats it up.5 In that day the LORD of the hosts shall be for a crown of glory and for a diadem of beauty unto the residue of his people,6 And for a spirit of judgment to him that sits upon [the throne of] judgment, and for strength to those that turn the battle to the gate.7 But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink; they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble [in] judgment.8 For all tables are full of vomit [and] filthiness, [so that there is] no place [clean].9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? [Those that are] weaned from the milk [and] drawn from the breasts.10 For precept [must be] upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, [and] there a little:11 For with stammering lips and another tongue he will speak to this people.12 To whom he said, This [is] the rest [with which] ye may cause the weary to rest; and this [is] the refreshing: yet they would not hear.13 But the word of the LORD shall be unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, [and] there a little; that they might go and fall backward and be broken and snared and taken.14 Therefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that have taken rule over this people which [is] in Jerusalem.15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we are at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood we have hid ourselves:16 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner [stone], a sure foundation: he that believes shall not make haste.17 Judgment also will I lay to the line and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with Sheol shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.19 From the time that it goes forth, it shall take you: for it shall come suddenly, by day and by night: and it shall be that the terror only causes [one to] understand the report.20 For the bed is shorter than that [a man] can stretch himself [on it]: and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself [in it].21 For the LORD shall rise up as [in] Mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as [in] the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.22 Now therefore do not be mockers lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of the hosts that consumption and destruction [are determined] upon the whole earth.23 Give ye ear and hear my voice; hearken and hear my speech.24 Does the plowman plow all day to sow? does he open and break the clods of his ground?25 When he has levelled the face thereof, does he not cast abroad the fitches and scatter the cummin and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and the rye in their place?26 For his God teaches him to know how to judge [and] instructs him.27 For the fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff and the cummin with a rod.28 Grain is thrashed [to make bread]; but he will not ever be threshing it, nor shall he grind [it] with the wheel of his cart, nor crush it with the teeth [of his thrashing instrument].29 This also comes forth from the LORD of the hosts to make [his] counsel wonderful, and to increase wisdom.:
