1 The proverbs of Solomon.
A wise son makes a glad father;
but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.
2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing,
but righteousness delivers from death.
3 Yahweh will not allow the soul of the righteous to go hungry,
but he thrusts away the desire of the wicked.
4 He becomes poor who works with a lazy hand,
but the hand of the diligent brings wealth.
5 He who gathers in summer is a wise son,
but he who sleeps during the harvest is a son who causes shame.
6 Blessings are on the head of the righteous,
but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.
7 The memory of the righteous is blessed,
but the name of the wicked will rot.
8 The wise in heart accept commandments,
but a chattering fool will fall.
9 He who walks blamelessly walks surely,
but he who perverts his ways will be found out.
10 One who winks with the eye causes sorrow,
but a chattering fool will fall.
11 The mouth of the righteous is a spring of life,
but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.
12 Hatred stirs up strife,
but love covers all wrongs.
13 Wisdom is found on the lips of him who has discernment,
but a rod is for the back of him who is void of understanding.
14 Wise men lay up knowledge,
but the mouth of the foolish is near ruin.
15 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city.
The destruction of the poor is their poverty.
16 The labor of the righteous leads to life.
The increase of the wicked leads to sin.
17 He is in the way of life who heeds correction,
but he who forsakes reproof leads others astray.
18 He who hides hatred has lying lips.
He who utters a slander is a fool.
19 In the multitude of words there is no lack of disobedience,
but he who restrains his lips does wisely.
20 The tongue of the righteous is like choice silver.
The heart of the wicked is of little worth.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many,
but the foolish die for lack of understanding.
22 Yahweh’s blessing brings wealth,
and he adds no trouble to it.
23 It is a fool’s pleasure to do wickedness,
but wisdom is a man of understanding’s pleasure.
24 What the wicked fear will overtake them,
but the desire of the righteous will be granted.
25 When the whirlwind passes, the wicked is no more;
but the righteous stand firm forever.
26 As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes,
so is the sluggard to those who send him.
27 The fear of Yahweh prolongs days,
but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.
28 The prospect of the righteous is joy,
but the hope of the wicked will perish.
29 The way of Yahweh is a stronghold to the upright,
but it is a destruction to the workers of iniquity.
30 The righteous will never be removed,
but the wicked will not dwell in the land.
31 The mouth of the righteous produces wisdom,
but the perverse tongue will be cut off.
32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable,
but the mouth of the wicked is perverse.

Te Kohinga Tuatahi a ngā Whakatauki a Horomona
1 Ko ngā whakatauki a Horomona.
He tama whakaaro nui, ka koa te pāpā;
tēnā he tama kūware, he utanga nui mō tōna whaea.
2 Kāhore he rawa o ngā taonga o te kino;
mā te tika ia te oranga ake i te mate.
3 E kore a Ihowā e tuku i te wairua o te tangata tika kia hemokai;
ka panā atu ia e ia te hiahia o te hunga kino.
4 He rawakore te tukunga iho o te ringa ngehe;
mā te ringa kakama ia ka hua te taonga.
5 He kohi raumati tā tama ngākau mahara;
he whakamā ia te rawa a tama moe ngahuru.
6 He manaaki kei te tumuaki o te tangata tika;
he ārita ia kei te waha o te tangata kino, taupoki ai.
7 Ka manaakitia te maharatanga ki te tangata tika;
ka pirau ia te ingoa o te hunga kino.
8 He ngākau whakaaro, ka tahuritia te whakahau;
he ngutu wairangi, ka hinga.
9 Ko te tangata haere tika, e haere ora ana;
ko te tangata parori kē ōna ara, ka mōhiotia ia.
10 Mā te whakakini o te kanohi ka puta ai te pōuri;
ko te ngutu wairangi ia, ka hinga.
11 He puna ora te māngai o te tangata tika;
tēnā ko te māngai o te hunga kino,
ka taupokina tērā e te mahi nanakia.
12 Ko tō te mauāhara he whakaoho i ngā totohe;
ko tō te aroha he hīpoki i ngā hē katoa.
13 E kitea te whakaaro nui ki ngā ngutu o te tangata mātau;
ko te rākau ia te mea mō te tuarā o te ngākaukore.
14 Rongoā ai te hunga whakaaro nui i te mātauranga;
he whakangaromanga ia kei te hori tonu, te māngai o te wairangi.
15 Ko ōna rawa te pā kaha o te tangata taonga;
tēnā ko te hunga kore taonga, hei whakangaromanga tō rātou rawakore.
16 Ko te mahi a te tangata tika e ahu ana ki te ora;
ko ngā hua o te kino ki te hara.
17 Kei te ara ki te ora te tangata e pupuri ana i te kupu ako;
ko te tangata ia e kore e pai kia rīria tōna hē, ka kotiti kē.
18 Ko te tangata e huna ana i te mauāhara he ngutu teka;
ā, he kūware te tangata e whakapuaki ana i te ngautuarā.
19 E kore ngā kupu maha e hapa i te kino;
he mahara nui ia te tangata he ngutu kokopi nei ōna.
20 He hiriwa pai rawa te arero o te tangata tika;
ko te ngākau o te hunga kino, he hauwarea rawa.
21 He tokomaha e whāngaia ana e ngā ngutu o te tangata tika;
ka mate ia te hunga kūware, he kore nō te ngākau mahara.
22 Ka hua te taonga i tā Ihowā manaaki;
kāhore hoki e kīnakitia e ia ki te pōuri.
23 Hei tākaro mā te wairangi te mahi hē;
mā te tangata mātau ia ko te whakaaro nui.
24 Ko tā te tangata kino i wehi ai ka tae anō ki a ia;
ā, ko tā te hunga tika i hiahia ai, ka hōmai.
25 Pahure rawa ake te tūkauati kua kore te hunga kino;
tēnā ko te tangata tika he tūranga pūmau tērā.
26 He winika ki ngā niho, he paowa ki ngā kanohi;
koia anō te māngere ki ōna kaiunga.
27 Ko te wehi ki a Ihowā e whakaroa ana i ngā rā;
ka whakapotoa mai ia ngā tau o te hunga kino.
28 Tūmanako atu te hunga tika, koa iho;
tūmanako atu te hunga kino, ngaro iho.
29 He kaha mō te tangata tika tā Ihowā ara;
he whakangaromanga ia mō ngā kaimahi i te kino.
30 E kore te tangata tika e whakangāueuetia ā ake ake;
e kore ia e nohoia e te hunga kino te whenua.
31 Ko te māngai o te tangata tika hua ana te whakaaro nui;
ka tapahia ia te arero whanokē.
32 E mōhio ana ngā ngutu o te tangata tika ki ngā mea ka manakohia;
he whanokē ia e whakapuakina ana e te māngai o te hunga kino.
