1 When the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning Yahweh’s name, she came to test him with hard questions. 2 She came to Jerusalem with a very great caravan, with camels that bore spices, very much gold, and precious stones; and when she had come to Solomon, she talked with him about all that was in her heart. 3 Solomon answered all her questions. There wasn’t anything hidden from the king which he didn’t tell her. 4 When the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, 5 the food of his table, the sitting of his servants, the attendance of his officials, their clothing, his cup bearers, and his ascent by which he went up to Yahweh’s house, there was no more spirit in her. 6 She said to the king, "It was a true report that I heard in my own land of your acts and of your wisdom. 7 However, I didn’t believe the words until I came and my eyes had seen it. Behold, not even half was told me! Your wisdom and prosperity exceed the fame which I heard. 8 Happy are your men, happy are these your servants who stand continually before you, who hear your wisdom. 9 Blessed is Yahweh your God, who delighted in you, to set you on the throne of Israel. Because Yahweh loved Israel forever, therefore he made you king, to do justice and righteousness." 10 She gave the king one hundred twenty talents of gold, and a very great quantity of spices, and precious stones. Never again was there such an abundance of spices as these which the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.

11 The fleet of Hiram that brought gold from Ophir also brought in from Ophir great quantities of almug trees*10:11 possibly an Indian sandalwood, with nice grain and a pleasant scent, and good for woodworking and precious stones. 12 The king made of the almug trees pillars for Yahweh’s house and for the king’s house, harps also and stringed instruments for the singers; no such almug trees came or were seen to this day.

13 King Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all her desire, whatever she asked, in addition to that which Solomon gave her of his royal bounty. So she turned and went to her own land, she and her servants.

14 Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred sixty-six talents*10:14 A talent is about 30 kilograms or 66 pounds or 965 Troy ounces, so 666 talents is about 20 metric tons of gold, 15 in addition to that which the traders brought, and the traffic of the merchants, and of all the kings of the mixed people, and of the governors of the country. 16 King Solomon made two hundred bucklers of beaten gold; six hundred shekels*10:16 A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.32 Troy ounces, so 600 shekels is about 6 kilograms or 13.2 pounds or 192 Troy ounces. of gold went to one buckler. 17 He made three hundred shields of beaten gold; three minas*10:17 A mina is about 600 grams or 1.3 U. S. pounds. of gold went to one shield; and the king put them in the House of the Forest of Lebanon. 18 Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it with the finest gold. 19 There were six steps to the throne, and the top of the throne was round behind; and there were armrests on either side by the place of the seat, and two lions standing beside the armrests. 20 Twelve lions stood there on the one side and on the other on the six steps. Nothing like it was made in any kingdom. 21 All King Solomon’s drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels of the House of the Forest of Lebanon were of pure gold. None were of silver, because it was considered of little value in the days of Solomon. 22 For the king had a fleet of ships of Tarshish at sea with Hiram’s fleet. Once every three years the fleet of Tarshish came bringing gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks.

23 So King Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth in riches and in wisdom. 24 All the earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom which God had put in his heart. 25 Year after year, every man brought his tribute, vessels of silver, vessels of gold, clothing, armor, spices, horses, and mules.

26 Solomon gathered together chariots and horsemen. He had one thousand four hundred chariots and twelve thousand horsemen. He kept them in the chariot cities and with the king at Jerusalem. 27 The king made silver as common as stones in Jerusalem, and cedars as common as the sycamore trees that are in the lowland. 28 The horses which Solomon had were brought out of Egypt. The king’s merchants received them in droves, each drove at a price. 29 A chariot was imported from Egypt for six hundred shekels*10:29 A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces. of silver, and a horse for one hundred fifty shekels; and so they exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and to the kings of Syria.

Drottningen av Sabas besök

När hon kom inför Salomo, talade hon med honom om allt som låg på hennes hjärta. 3 Och Salomo svarade på alla hennes frågor. Ingenting var dolt för kungen, utan han kunde ge henne svar på allt.

4 När drottningen av Saba såg Salomos hela vishet och såg huset han hade byggt 5 och rätterna på hans bord och hur hans tjänare satt där och hur de som betjänade honom skötte sina sysslor och hur de var klädda, och hans hovmän och brännoffren som han offrade i Herrens hus, blev hon utom sig av förundran. 6 Och hon sade till kungen: "Så var det då sant det jag i mitt land hörde om dina ord och om din vishet. 7 Jag ville inte tro det, förrän jag kom hit och fick se det med egna ögon. Men se, inte ens hälften hade berättats för mig. Du har långt mer vishet och rikedom än jag hade hört genom ryktet. 8 Lyckliga är dina män och lyckliga är dessa dina tjänare, som ständigt får stå inför dig och höra din visdom. 9 *1 Kung 5:7, 2 Krön 2:11. Välsignad är Herren din Gud, som har funnit sådant behag i dig och satt dig på Israels tron! Herren älskar Israel för evigt, det är därför han har gjort dig till kung, för att du ska skipa lag och rätt."

10 Hon gav kungen hundratjugo talenter*10:10hundratjugo talenterCa 3,5 ton guld. guld och dessutom mängder av väldoftande kryddor samt dyrbara stenar. En så stor mängd väldoftande kryddor som drottningen av Saba gav kung Salomo har aldrig mer förts in.

11 *1 Kung 9:26f, 22:49. När Hirams flotta hämtade guld från Ofir, förde den också med sig almugträ*10:11almugträKanske aromatiskt sandelträ som växer i Indien. i stor mängd och dyrbara stenar. 12 Av almugträet lät kungen göra tillbehör till Herrens hus och till kungapalatset samt harpor och lyror för sångarna. Så mycket almugträ har sedan fram till denna dag inte förts in eller setts i landet.

13 Kung Salomo gav drottningen av Saba allt hon önskade och begärde. Till det kom allt annat han i sin kungliga frikostighet skänkte henne. Sedan vände hon om och reste hem med sina tjänare till sitt land igen.

Salomos rikedom

14 Det guld som årligen kom in till Salomo vägde sexhundrasextiosex talenter*10:14sexhundrasextiosex talenterCa 20 ton guld., 15 utöver det som kringresande handelsmän och köpmän förde in, och det som kom från alla kungarna i Arabien och från ståthållarna i landet.

16 *1 Kung 14:26, 2 Krön 9:15f, 12:9. Kung Salomo lät göra tvåhundra stora sköldar av uthamrat guld och använde till varje sådan sköld sexhundra siklar guld 17 *1 Kung 7:2. samt trehundra mindre sköldar av uthamrat guld och använde till varje sådan sköld tre minor*10:16fsexhundra siklar … tre minorDrygt 6 kg och nästan 2 kg guld. guld. Kungen satte upp dem i Libanonskogshuset. 18 Dessutom lät kungen göra en stor tron av elfenben och täckte den med fint guld. 19 Tronen hade sex trappsteg och tronens ryggstycke var avrundat upptill. På båda sidor om sätet fanns armstöd, och två lejon stod utmed armstöden. 20 Tolv lejon stod där, ett på varje sida om de sex trappstegen. Något sådant har aldrig tillverkats i något annat rike. 21 Alla kung Salomos dryckeskärl var av guld, och alla kärl i Libanonskogshuset var av rent guld. Ingenting var av silver, det hade inget värde på Salomos tid.

Kungen hade en egen Tarshishflotta*10:22TarshishflottaLångdistansskepp som kunde segla t ex över Medelhavet (se 22:49, 1 Mos 10:4). på havet tillsammans med Hirams flotta, och en gång vart tredje år kom Tarshishflottan hem och förde med sig guld och silver, elfenben, apor och påfåglar.

Kung Salomo blev större än någon annan kung på jorden,*10:23större än någon annan kung på jordenSe Salomos messianska kungapsalm Ps 72 och Pred 1:16f. både i rikedom och vishet. 24 *1 Kung 4:34. Från alla länder kom man för att besöka Salomo och höra den visdom som Gud hade lagt ner i hans hjärta. 25 Var och en förde med sig gåvor: föremål av silver och guld, kläder, vapen, väldoftande kryddor, hästar och mulåsnor. Detta hände år efter år.

26 *1 Kung 4:26, 9:19, 2 Krön 1:14f, 9:25f. Salomo samlade också vagnar och ridhästar, så att han hade 1 400 vagnar och 12 000 ridhästar. Dem inrymde han dels i vagnsstäderna, dels i Jerusalem hos kungen själv. 27 Kungen styrde så att silver blev lika vanligt i Jerusalem som stenar, och cederträ lika vanligt som mullbärsträ i Låglandet. 28 *2 Krön 1:16. Hästarna som Salomo skaffade kom från Egypten. En del av kungens uppköpare hämtade ett visst antal av dem till bestämt pris. 29 Varje vagn som hämtades och fördes in från Egypten kostade 600 siklar silver och varje häst 150*10:29600 siklar … 150Drygt 6 kg och 1,5 kg silver. Salomos vagnar var långt mycket dyrare än det vanliga priset om ca 100 siklar per vagn.. Likaså infördes genom deras försorg sådana till hetiternas alla kungar och till kungarna i Aram.
