2 Reis 1

1 Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab.

2 Ahaziah fell down through the lattice in his upper room that was in Samaria, and was sick. So he sent messengers, and said to them, "Go, inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I will recover from this sickness."

3 But Yahweh’s*1:3 "Yahweh" is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered "LORD" (all caps) in other translations. angel said to Elijah the Tishbite, "Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and tell them, ‘Is it because there is no God*1:3 The Hebrew word rendered "God" is "אֱלֹהִ֑ים" (Elohim). in Israel that you go to inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron? 4 Now therefore Yahweh says, "You will not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but you will surely die."’" Then Elijah departed.

5 The messengers returned to him, and he said to them, "Why is it that you have returned?"

6 They said to him, "A man came up to meet us, and said to us, ‘Go, return to the king who sent you, and tell him, "Yahweh says, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you send to inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but you will surely die.’"’"

7 He said to them, "What kind of man was he who came up to meet you and told you these words?"

8 They answered him, "He was a hairy man, and wearing a leather belt around his waist."

He said, "It’s Elijah the Tishbite."

9 Then the king sent a captain of fifty with his fifty to him. He went up to him; and behold,*1:9 "Behold", from "הִנֵּה", means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection. he was sitting on the top of the hill. He said to him, "Man of God, the king has said, ‘Come down!’"

10 Elijah answered to the captain of fifty, "If I am a man of God, then let fire come down from the sky and consume you and your fifty!" Then fire came down from the sky, and consumed him and his fifty.

11 Again he sent to him another captain of fifty with his fifty. He answered him, "Man of God, the king has said, ‘Come down quickly!’"

12 Elijah answered them, "If I am a man of God, then let fire come down from the sky and consume you and your fifty!" Then God’s fire came down from the sky, and consumed him and his fifty.

13 Again he sent the captain of a third fifty with his fifty. The third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and begged him, and said to him, "Man of God, please let my life and the life of these fifty of your servants be precious in your sight. 14 Behold, fire came down from the sky and consumed the last two captains of fifty with their fifties. But now let my life be precious in your sight."

15 Yahweh’s angel said to Elijah, "Go down with him. Don’t be afraid of him."

Then he arose and went down with him to the king. 16 He said to him, "Yahweh says, ‘Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron, is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of his word? Therefore you will not come down from the bed where you have gone up, but you will surely die.’"

17 So he died according to Yahweh’s word which Elijah had spoken. Jehoram began to reign in his place in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, because he had no son. 18 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

Herrens dom över Ahasja

1 *2 Kung 3:5, 2 Sam 8:2. Efter Ahabs död gjorde Moab uppror mot Israel.

2 *5 Mos 18:11, Jes 8:19, 19:3. Ahasja föll ut genom spjälorna på sin övervåning i Samaria och skadade sig så att han blev sjuk. Då skickade han efter sändebud och sade till dem: "Gå och fråga Baal-Sebub*1:2Baal-Sebub betyder "flugornas herre", troligen en förvrängning av Baal-Sebul, "den upphöjde herren". Tillbads i Ugarit som dödsrikets herre (jfr Hebr 2:14) och åkallades för att driva ut sjukdomsandar (jfr Matt 12:24)., guden i Ekron*1:2EkronFilisteisk stad, den nordligaste på Gazaremsan (1 Sam 5:16, 6:16)., om jag ska bli frisk från denna sjukdom." 3 Men Herrens ängel hade sagt till tishbiten Elia: "Bryt upp och gå och möt sändebuden från kungen i Samaria och säg till dem: Är det för att det inte finns någon Gud i Israel som ni går och frågar Baal-Sebub, guden i Ekron? 4 *2 Kung 8:10. Därför säger Herren så: Du ska inte komma upp ur den säng där du lagt dig, för du måste dö". Och Elia gick.

5 När sändebuden kom tillbaka till kungen, frågade han dem: "Varför kommer ni tillbaka?" 6 De svarade honom: "En man kom emot oss och sade till oss: Gå tillbaka till kungen som har sänt er och säg till honom: Så säger Herren: Är det för att det inte finns någon Gud i Israel som du sänder bud för att fråga Baal-Sebub, guden i Ekron? Därför ska du inte komma upp ur den säng där du lagt dig, för du måste dö." 7 Kungen frågade dem: "Hur såg mannen ut som kom emot er och talade till er på det sättet?" 8 *Sak 13:4, Matt 3:4, Mark 1:6. De svarade honom: "Mannen hade en hårmantel*1:8hårmantelAntingen hans klädsel (Sak 13:4, Matt 3:4) eller buskig kroppsbehåring (jfr 1 Mos 25:25). och ett läderbälte om höfterna." Då sade han: "Det var tishbiten Elia."

9 Han sände ett befäl med femtio man till Elia. När befälet kom upp till honom där han satt på toppen av berget, sade han till honom: "Gudsman! Kungen befaller dig att komma ner." 10 *1 Kung 18:36f, Luk 9:54, Job 1:16. Elia svarade befälet: "Om jag är en gudsman ska eld komma ner från himlen*1:10eld komma ner från himlenSyftar ibland på blixtnedslag (2 Mos 9:24). och förtära dig och dina femtio man." Då kom eld ner från himlen och förtärde honom och hans femtio man.

11 *1 Sam 19:21. Ahasja sände ett annat befäl till honom med femtio man. Befälet sade till honom: "Gudsman, så säger kungen: Kom genast ner!" 12 Elia svarade och sade till dem: "Om jag är en gudsman ska eld komma ner från himlen och förtära dig och dina femtio man." Då kom Guds eld ner från himlen och förtärde honom och hans femtio man.

13 Åter sände han i väg ett tredje befäl med femtio man. Befälet drog dit upp, och när han kom fram föll han ner på sina knän för Elia och bad honom: "Gudsman, låt mitt liv och dessa dina femtio tjänares liv vara värt något i dina ögon. 14 Eld kom ner från himlen och förtärde de första två befälen med deras femtio man. Men låt nu mitt liv vara värt något i dina ögon." 15 Herrens ängel sade till Elia: "Gå ner med honom och var inte rädd för honom." Då reste Elia sig och gick med honom ner till kungen 16 och sade till honom: "Så säger Herren: Du skickade sändebud för att fråga Baal-Sebub, guden i Ekron, som om det inte fanns någon Gud i Israel som du kunde fråga. Därför ska du inte komma upp ur den säng som du har lagt dig i, för du måste dö." 17 *2 Kung 3:1, 2 Krön 21:3. Och Ahasja dog enligt det ord som Herren hade talat genom Elia. Joram*1:17JoramBror till Ahasja och son till Ahab (3:1), till skillnad från kung Joram i Jerusalem (8:16f). blev kung efter honom i Juda kung Jorams, Joshafats sons, andra regeringsår. Ahasja hade nämligen ingen son.
