2 Reis 23

1 The king sent, and they gathered to him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem. 2 The king went up to Yahweh’s house, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him—with the priests, the prophets, and all the people, both small and great; and he read in their hearing all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in Yahweh’s house. 3 The king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before Yahweh to walk after Yahweh and to keep his commandments, his testimonies, and his statutes with all his heart and all his soul, to confirm the words of this covenant that were written in this book; and all the people agreed to the covenant.

4 The king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the threshold, to bring out of Yahweh’s temple all the vessels that were made for Baal, for the Asherah, and for all the army of the sky; and he burned them outside of Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron, and carried their ashes to Bethel. 5 He got rid of the idolatrous priests whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah and in the places around Jerusalem; those also who burned incense to Baal, to the sun, to the moon, to the planets, and to all the army of the sky. 6 He brought out the Asherah from Yahweh’s house, outside of Jerusalem, to the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron, and beat it to dust, and cast its dust on the graves of the common people. 7 He broke down the houses of the male shrine prostitutes that were in Yahweh’s house, where the women wove hangings for the Asherah. 8 He brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba to Beersheba; and he broke down the high places of the gates that were at the entrance of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which were on a man’s left hand at the gate of the city. 9 Nevertheless the priests of the high places didn’t come up to Yahweh’s altar in Jerusalem, but they ate unleavened bread among their brothers. 10 He defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the children of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech. 11 He took away the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun, at the entrance of Yahweh’s house, by the room of Nathan Melech the officer who was in the court; and he burned the chariots of the sun with fire. 12 The king broke down the altars that were on the roof of the upper room of Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars which Manasseh had made in the two courts of Yahweh’s house, and beat them down from there, and cast their dust into the brook Kidron. 13 The king defiled the high places that were before Jerusalem, which were on the right hand of the mountain of corruption, which Solomon the king of Israel had built for Ashtoreth the abomination of the Sidonians, and for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Milcom the abomination of the children of Ammon. 14 He broke in pieces the pillars, cut down the Asherah poles, and filled their places with men’s bones.

15 Moreover the altar that was at Bethel and the high place which Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, had made, even that altar and the high place he broke down; and he burned the high place and beat it to dust, and burned the Asherah. 16 As Josiah turned himself, he spied the tombs that were there in the mountain; and he sent, and took the bones out of the tombs, and burned them on the altar, and defiled it, according to Yahweh’s word which the man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these things. 17 Then he said, "What monument is that which I see?"

The men of the city told him, "It is the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and proclaimed these things that you have done against the altar of Bethel."

18 He said, "Let him be! Let no one move his bones." So they let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet who came out of Samaria. 19 All the houses also of the high places that were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to provoke Yahweh to anger, Josiah took away, and did to them according to all the acts that he had done in Bethel. 20 He killed all the priests of the high places that were there, on the altars, and burned men’s bones on them; and he returned to Jerusalem.

21 The king commanded all the people, saying, "Keep the Passover to Yahweh your God, as it is written in this book of the covenant." 22 Surely there was not kept such a Passover from the days of the judges who judged Israel, nor in all the days of the kings of Israel, nor of the kings of Judah; 23 but in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, this Passover was kept to Yahweh in Jerusalem.

24 Moreover, Josiah removed those who had familiar spirits, the wizards, and the teraphim,*23:24 teraphim were household idols. and the idols, and all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, that he might confirm the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in Yahweh’s house. 25 There was no king like him before him, who turned to Yahweh with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; and there was none like him who arose after him. 26 Notwithstanding, Yahweh didn’t turn from the fierceness of his great wrath, with which his anger burned against Judah, because of all the provocation with which Manasseh had provoked him. 27 Yahweh said, "I will also remove Judah out of my sight, as I have removed Israel; and I will cast off this city which I have chosen, even Jerusalem, and the house of which I said, ‘My name shall be there.’"

28 Now the rest of the acts of Josiah, and all that he did, aren’t they written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? 29 In his days Pharaoh Necoh king of Egypt went up against the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates; and King Josiah went against him, but Pharaoh Necoh killed him at Megiddo when he saw him. 30 His servants carried him dead in a chariot from Megiddo, brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own tomb. The people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and anointed him, and made him king in his father’s place.

31 Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he began to reign; and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah. 32 He did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, according to all that his fathers had done. 33 Pharaoh Necoh put him in bonds at Riblah in the land of Hamath, that he might not reign in Jerusalem; and put the land to a tribute of one hundred talents of silver and a talent*23:33 A talent is about 30 kilograms or 66 pounds or 965 Troy ounces of gold. 34 Pharaoh Necoh made Eliakim the son of Josiah king in the place of Josiah his father, and changed his name to Jehoiakim; but he took Jehoahaz away, and he came to Egypt and died there. 35 Jehoiakim gave the silver and the gold to Pharaoh; but he taxed the land to give the money according to the commandment of Pharaoh. He exacted the silver and the gold of the people of the land, from everyone according to his assessment, to give it to Pharaoh Necoh. 36 Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zebidah the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah. 37 He did that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, according to all that his fathers had done.

Josias reformation

1 *2 Krön 34:29f. Kungen sände bud och lät kalla till sig alla de äldste i Juda och Jerusalem. 2 *2 Kung 22:8. Och kungen gick upp i Herrens hus. Och kungen trädde fram till pelaren och slöt inför Herrens ansikte det förbundet att de skulle följa Herren och hålla fast vid hans bud, vittnesbörd och stadgar av hela sitt hjärta och av hela sin själ, och upprätthålla detta förbunds ord som var skrivna i denna bok. Och allt folket ingick förbundet.

4 *2 Kung 21:7, 25:18, 2 Krön 34:3f. Därefter befallde kungen översteprästen Hilkia och prästerna under honom liksom dem som höll vakt vid ingången, att de ur Herrens tempel skulle föra bort alla de föremål som var gjorda åt Baal och Asheran och åt himlens hela härskara. Och han brände dem utanför Jerusalem på Kidrons fält, men askan efter dem lät han föra till Betel. 5 *2 Kung 21:3. Han hämtade alla prästerna från Juda städer och orenade offerhöjderna där prästerna hade tänt offereld, från Geba*23:8GebaNordgräns för Juda rike (jfr 1 Kung 15:22), ca 1 mil norr om Jerusalem. ända till Beer-Sheba*23:8Beer-ShebaDen södra gränsstaden. Här har stenar från ett altare raserat av Josia eller Hiskia (2 Krön 31:1) hittats.. Han bröt ner offerhöjderna vid portarna, de som fanns vid ingången till stadsfogden Josuas port och de som fanns till vänster när man gick in genom stadsporten.

9 *Hes 44:10f. Men offerhöjdsprästerna fick inte stiga upp till Herrens altare i Jerusalem, utan de åt osyrat bröd bland sina bröder. 10 *3 Mos 18:21, Jer 7:31. Josia orenade också Tofet*23:10TofetBetyder "härd". Här offrades barn åt avgudar (3 Mos 20:2f, Jer 32:35). Hinnomsdalen låg sydväst om Jerusalem och användes senare som en bild för evig eld ("Gehenna", Matt 5:22). i Hinnoms barns dal för att ingen skulle låta sin son eller dotter gå genom eld till offer åt Molok. 11 *1 Krön 26:18. Han tog bort de hästar som Juda kungar hade invigt åt solen och ställt upp så att man inte kunde gå in i Herrens hus, vid hovmannen Netan-Meleks kammare i Parvarim. 12 *2 Kung 11:18, 21:5, 2 Krön 30:14, Jer 19:13, Sef 1:5. Kungen bröt ner altarna på taket över Ahas övre sal som Juda kungar hade gjort, likaså de altaren som Manasse hade gjort på de båda förgårdarna till Herrens hus. Sedan skyndade han bort därifrån och kastade stoftet av dem i Kidrons dal. 13 *4 Mos 21:29, 1 Kung 11:5f. Se 1 Kung 11:7., som Israels kung Salomo hade byggt åt Astarte, sidoniernas vidrighet, åt Kemosh, Moabs vidrighet och åt Milkom, ammoniternas avskyvärda avgud. 14 *2 Mos 34:13, 5 Mos 7:5. Stoderna slog han sönder och asherapålarna högg han ner. Platsen där de hade stått fyllde han med människoben*23:14människobenBärare av orenhet (jfr 4 Mos 19:11f)..

15 *1 Kung 12:28f, 13:2, 32. Han bröt också ner altaret i Betel med dess offerhöjd. Det var den offerhöjd som Jerobeam, Nebats son, hade byggt upp, han som fick Israel att synda. Därefter brände han offerhöjden och stötte sönder den till stoft och brände dessutom Asheran. 16 *1 Kung 13:1f, 2 Krön 34:5. När Josia såg sig om och fick se gravarna som fanns på berget, lät han hämta ut benen ur gravarna och brände dem på altaret och orenade det så, i enlighet med Herrens ord genom gudsmannen*23:16gudsmannenEn profet trehundra år tidigare (se 1 Kung 13). som sade att det skulle ske. 17 *1 Kung 13:29f. Kungen frågade: "Vad är det för ett minnesmärke som jag ser där?" Folket i staden svarade: "Där ligger gudsmannen begravd, han som kom från Juda och ropade mot altaret i Betel att det skulle ske som du nu har gjort." 18 *1 Kung 13:11f. Då sade han: "Låt honom vara. Ingen får röra hans ben." Så lämnade man hans ben i fred och även benen av den profet som hade kommit dit från Samarien.

19 Josia avlägsnade också alla de offerhöjdshus i Samariens städer som Israels kungar hade byggt upp och som väckt Herrens vrede. Han gjorde med dem precis på samma sätt som han hade gjort i Betel. 20 *1 Kung 18:40, 2 Krön 34:5f. Alla offerhöjdspräster som fanns där avrättade han på altarna och brände människoben ovanpå dem. Därefter vände han tillbaka till Jerusalem.

Ett rätt påskfirande

21 *2 Mos 12:3f, 5 Mos 16:2f, 2 Krön 35:1f. Kungen befallde allt folket: "Fira påskhögtid*23:21Fira påskhögtidSe den utförligare skildringen i 2 Krön 35. åt Herren er Gud så som det är föreskrivet i denna förbundsbok." 22 En sådan påskhögtid hade nämligen inte firats sedan den tid då domarna dömde Israel, inte någon gång under hela den tid som kungar regerade i Israel och Juda. 23 Det var först i kung Josias artonde regeringsår som en sådan påskhögtid firades åt Herren i Jerusalem.

Josias övriga åtgärder

24 *3 Mos 19:31, 20:27, 5 Mos 18:10f, Jes 8:19. Dessutom skaffade Josia bort andebesvärjarna och spåmännen, husgudarna*23:24husgudarnaStatyetter förknippade med folktro och vidskepelse (se 1 Mos 31:34 med not). och avgudarna och allt det avskyvärda som man kunde se i Juda land och i Jerusalem. Han gjorde det för att upprätthålla de lagord som fanns skrivna i den bok som prästen Hilkia hade funnit i Herrens hus. 25 *2 Kung 18:5. Före Josia hade det inte funnits någon kung som var som han, ingen som så av hela sitt hjärta, hela sin själ och hela sin kraft hade vänt sig till Herren i enlighet med hela Mose lag. Efter honom kom inte heller någon som var lik honom.

26 *2 Kung 21:2f, Jer 15:4. Ändå vände Herren sig inte från sin stora vredes glöd. Hans vrede hade blivit upptänd mot Juda på grund av allt det som Manasse hade gjort och väckt hans vrede med. 27 *1 Kung 8:29, 9:3, 2 Kung 24:3f.Herren sade: "Också Juda ska jag driva bort från mitt ansikte, liksom jag har drivit bort Israel. Jag ska förkasta Jerusalem, denna stad som jag hade utvalt, och även det hus om vilket jag hade sagt: Mitt namn ska vara där."

Slutet av Josias regering

28 Vad som mer finns att säga om Josia och om allt som han gjorde, det är skrivet i Juda kungars krönika. 29 *2 Krön 35:20f, Jer 46:2. Under hans tid drog farao Neko*23:29farao NekoNeko II (610-595 f Kr) ville år 609 hjälpa de sista kvarvarande assyrierna i Harran i norra Syrien, som var trängda av babylonierna efter Nineves fall 612 f Kr (se Nahums bok). Josia stödde babylonierna liksom hans farfar Hiskia (20:12 med not)., kungen av Egypten, upp mot Assyriens kung vid floden Eufrat. Då tågade kung Josia emot honom men blev dödad av honom vid Megiddo*23:29MegiddoDet talas i Upp 16:16 om en framtida drabbning här vid "Harmagedon". under första sammandrabbningen. 30 *2 Kung 9:28, 2 Krön 36:1f, Jer 22:11f. Hans tjänare förde hans döda kropp i en vagn bort från Megiddo till Jerusalem och begravde honom i hans grav.

Men folket i landet tog Josias son Joahas och smorde honom och gjorde honom till kung efter hans far.

Joahas blir kung i Juda

34 Och farao Neko gjorde Eljakim, Josias son, till kung i hans far Josias ställe och ändrade hans namn till Jojakim. Men han tog med sig Joahas, som på så sätt kom till Egypten och dog där.

Jojakim blir kung i Juda

36 Jojakim var tjugofem år när han blev kung, och han regerade elva år*23:36Jojakim … elva årÅr 609-598 f Kr. Jojakim betyder "Herren ska upprätta". Se även 2 Krön 36:4f. Föraktade Herrens ord (Jer 26, 36) och kritiserades av Jeremia (Jer 22:13f). i Jerusalem. Hans mor hette Sebida och hon var dotter till Pedaja från Ruma. 37 Han gjorde det som var ont i Herrens ögon, precis som hans fäder hade gjort.
