1 O filho sábio atende à instrução do pai; mas o escarnecedor não ouve a repreensão.2 Do fruto da boca cada um comerá o bem, mas a alma dos prevaricadores comerá a violência.3 O que guarda a sua boca conserva a sua alma, mas o que abre muito os seus lábios se destrói.4 A alma do preguiçoso deseja, e coisa nenhuma alcança, mas a alma dos diligentes se farta.5 O justo odeia a palavra de mentira, mas o ímpio faz vergonha e se confunde.6 A justiça guarda ao que é de caminho certo, mas a impiedade transtornará o pecador.7 Há alguns que se fazem de ricos, e não têm coisa nenhuma, e outros que se fazem de pobres e têm muitas riquezas.8 O resgate da vida de cada um são as suas riquezas, mas o pobre não ouve ameaças.9 A luz dos justos alegra, mas a candeia dos ímpios se apagará.10 Da soberba só provém a contenda, mas com os que se aconselham se acha a sabedoria.11 A riqueza de procedência vã diminuirá, mas quem a ajunta com o próprio trabalho a aumentará.12 A esperança adiada desfalece o coração, mas o desejo atendido é árvore de vida.13 O que despreza a palavra perecerá, mas o que teme o mandamento será galardoado.14 A doutrina do sábio é uma fonte de vida para se desviar dos laços da morte.15 O bom entendimento favorece, mas o caminho dos prevaricadores é áspero.16 Todo prudente procede com conhecimento, mas o insensato espraia a sua loucura.17 O que prega a maldade cai no mal, mas o embaixador fiel é saúde.18 Pobreza e afronta virão ao que rejeita a instrução, mas o que guarda a repreensão será honrado.19 O desejo que se alcança deleita a alma, mas apartar-se do mal é abominável para os insensatos.20 O que anda com os sábios ficará sábio, mas o companheiro dos tolos será destruído.21 O mal perseguirá os pecadores, mas os justos serão galardoados com o bem.22 O homem de bem deixa uma herança aos filhos de seus filhos, mas a riqueza do pecador é depositada para o justo.23 O pobre, do sulco da terra, tira mantimento em abundância; mas há os que se consomem por falta de juízo.24 O que não faz uso da vara odeia seu filho, mas o que o ama, desde cedo o castiga.25 O justo come até saciar sua alma, mas o ventre dos ímpios passará necessidade.

1 A wise son becometh so by the correction of his father; but a scorner hearkeneth not to rebuke.2 From the fruit of a man’s mouth doth he eat what is good; but the longing of the treacherous is for violence.3 He that watcheth his mouth guardeth his soul; but he that openeth wide his lips prepareth himself destruction.4 The sluggard longeth in his soul, and there cometh nothing; but the soul of the diligent will be abundantly gratified.5 The righteous hateth the word of falsehood; but the wicked bringeth shame and dishonor.6 Righteousness keepeth him that is upright on his way; but wickedness perverteth the man of sin.7 There is some one that pretendeth to be rich without having any thing; another that pretendeth to be poor while having abundant wealth.8 As the ransom of a man’s life hath he often to give his riches; but the poor heareth no threat.9 The light of the righteous burneth joyfully; but the lamp of the wicked will be quenched.10 Only through presumptuous conduct doth man produce contention; but with the well–advised is wisdom.11 Wealth gotten by vain deeds will be diminished; but he that gathereth by close labor will increase it.12 Expectation long deferred maketh the heart sick; but a tree of life is a desire which is fulfilled.13 Whoso despiseth the word shall fall in debt to it; but he that feareth the commandment will be rewarded.14 The instruction of the wise is a source of life, teaching to avoid the snares of death.15 Good intelligence giveth grace; but the way of the treacherous is hard.16 Every prudent man acteth with knowledge; but a fool spreadeth abroad his folly.17 A wicked messenger falleth into unhappiness; but a faithful ambassador bringeth healing.18 Poverty and disgrace will overtake him that rejecteth correction; but he that observeth admonition will be honored.19 A desire accomplished is pleasant to the soul; but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.20 He that walketh with wise men will become wise; but he that associateth with fools will be destroyed.21 Evil pursueth the sinners; but the righteous will God repay with happiness.22 A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children; but the wealth of the sinner is treasured up for the righteous.23 Much food bringeth the new–tilled ground of the poor; but there are many others that are taken away through injustice.24 He that withholdeth his rod hateth his son; but he that loveth him chastiseth him betimes.25 The righteous eateth to satisfy his desire to eat; but the belly of the wicked always suffereth want.
