1 Também estes são provérbios de Salomão, os quais transcreveram os homens de Ezequias, rei de Judá.2 A glória de Deus está nas coisas encobertas; mas a honra dos reis, está em descobri-las.3 Os céus, pela altura, e a terra, pela profundidade, assim o coração dos reis é insondável.4 Tira da prata as escórias, e sairá vaso para o fundidor;5 Tira o ímpio da presença do rei, e o seu trono se firmará na justiça.6 Não te glories na presença do rei, nem te ponhas no lugar dos grandes;7 Porque melhor é que te digam: Sobe aqui; do que seres humilhado diante do príncipe que os teus olhos já viram.8 Não te precipites em litigar, para que depois, ao fim, fiques sem ação, quando teu próximo te puser em apuros.9 Pleiteia a tua causa com o teu próximo, e não reveles o segredo a outro,10 Para que não te desonre o que o ouvir, e a tua infâmia não se aparte de ti.11 Como maçãs de ouro em salvas de prata, assim é a palavra dita a seu tempo.12 Como pendentes de ouro e gargantilhas de ouro fino, assim é o sábio repreensor para o ouvido atento.13 Como o frio da neve no tempo da sega, assim é o mensageiro fiel para com os que o enviam; porque refresca a alma dos seus senhores.14 Como nuvens e ventos que não trazem chuva, assim é o homem que se gaba falsamente de dádivas.15 Pela longanimidade se persuade o príncipe, e a língua branda amolece até os ossos.16 Achaste mel? Come só o que te basta; para que porventura não te fartes dele, e o venhas a vomitar.17 Não ponhas muito os pés na casa do teu próximo; para que se não enfade de ti, e passe a te odiar.18 Martelo, espada e flecha aguda é o homem que profere falso testemunho contra o seu próximo.19 Como dente quebrado, e pé desconjuntado, é a confiança no desleal, no tempo da angústia.20 O que canta canções para o coração aflito é como aquele que despe a roupa num dia de frio, ou como o vinagre sobre salitre.21 Se o teu inimigo tiver fome, dá-lhe pão para comer; e se tiver sede, dá-lhe água para beber;22 Porque assim lhe amontoarás brasas sobre a cabeça; e o Senhor to retribuirá.23 O vento norte afugenta a chuva, e a face irada, a língua fingida.24 Melhor é morar só num canto de telhado do que com a mulher briguenta numa casa ampla.25 Como água fresca para a alma cansada, tais são as boas novas vindas da terra distante.26 Como fonte turvada, e manancial poluído, assim é o justo que cede diante do ímpio.27 Comer mel demais não é bom; assim, a busca da própria glória não é glória.28 Como a cidade derrubada, sem muro, assim é o homem que não pode conter o seu espírito.

1 Also these are the proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah the king of Judah have collected.2 It is the honor of God to conceal a thing; but the honor of kings is to search out a matter.3 As are the heavens for height, and the earth is for depth, so should the heart of kings be unsearchable.4 Take away the dross from the silver, and there will come forth a vessel for the melter.5 Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne will be firmly established in righteousness.6 Do not glorify thyself in the presence of the king, and force thyself not into the place of great men;7 For better it is that it be said unto thee, "Come up hither," than that thou shouldst be put lower in the presence of the prince, which thy own eyes have often seen.8 Do not proceed to a contest hastily, lest thou know not what thou wilt have to do at its end, when thy neighbor hath put thee to confusion.9 Carry on thy cause with thy neighbor; but lay not open the secret of another:10 Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thy infamy never be removed.11 Like apples of gold among figures of silver is a word spoken in a proper manner.12 As an earring of gold, and a pendant of fine gold, so is a wise reprover toward an ear that listeneth.13 As the cooling of snow on a harvest–day, so is a faithful messenger to those that send him; for he refresheth the soul of his master.14 Like clouds and wind without rain, so is a man that vaunteth falsely of a gift.15 By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh bones.16 Hast thou found honey: eat so much as is sufficient for thee: lest thou consume too much of it, and have to vomit it forth.17 Make thy foot scarce in the house of thy friend: lest he have too much of thee, and so hate thee.18 A battle–axe, and a sword, and a sharpened arrow is a man that testifieth as a false witness against his neighbor.19 Like a broken tooth and a foot out of joint, is confidence in a treacherous man in a time of distress.20 As he that taketh off his garment on a cold day, as vinegar is upon natron: so is he that singeth songs before an unhappy heart.21 If thy enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink;22 For though thou gatherest coals of fire upon his head, yet will the Lord repay it unto thee.23 The north wind bringeth forth rain: so doth secret talking, angry countenances.24 It is better to dwell in the corner of a roof, than with a quarrelsome woman even in a roomy house.25 As cold water is to a fainting soul, so are good news from a far–off country.26 Like a turbid spring and a corrupt fountain, is a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked.27 To eat too much honey is not good: so is it honor to set a limit to men’s honor.28 Like a city that is broken in, and is without walls: so is the man that hath no control over his spirit.
