1 O vinho é escarnecedor, a bebida forte alvoroçadora; e todo aquele que neles errar nunca será sábio.2 Como o rugido do leão é o terror do rei; o que o provoca à ira peca contra a sua própria alma.3 Honroso é para o homem desviar-se de questões, mas todo tolo é intrometido.4 O preguiçoso não lavrará por causa do inverno, pelo que mendigará na sega, mas nada receberá.5 Como as águas profundas é o conselho no coração do homem; mas o homem de inteligência o trará para fora.6 A multidão dos homens apregoa a sua própria bondade, porém o homem fidedigno quem o achará?7 O justo anda na sua sinceridade; bem-aventurados serão os seus filhos depois dele.8 Assentando-se o rei no trono do juízo, com os seus olhos dissipa todo o mal.9 Quem poderá dizer: Purifiquei o meu coração, limpo estou de meu pecado?10 Dois pesos diferentes e duas espécies de medida são abominação ao Senhor, tanto um como outro.11 Até a criança se dará a conhecer pelas suas ações, se a sua obra é pura e reta.12 O ouvido que ouve, e o olho que vê, o Senhor os fez a ambos.13 Não ames o sono, para que não empobreças; abre os teus olhos, e te fartarás de pão.14 Nada vale, nada vale, dirá o comprador, mas, indo-se, então se gabará.15 Há ouro e abundância de rubis, mas os lábios do conhecimento são joia preciosa.16 Ficando alguém por fiador de um estranho, tome-se-lhe a roupa; e por penhor àquele que se obriga pela mulher estranha.17 Suave é ao homem o pão da mentira, mas depois a sua boca se encherá de cascalho.18 Cada pensamento se confirma com conselho e com bons conselhos se faz a guerra.19 O que anda tagarelando revela o segredo; não te intrometas com o que lisonjeia com os seus lábios.20 O que amaldiçoa seu pai ou sua mãe, apagar-se-á a sua lâmpada em negras trevas.21 A herança que no princípio é adquirida às pressas, no fim não será abençoada.22 Não digas: Vingar-me-ei do mal; espera pelo Senhor, e ele te livrará.23 Pesos diferentes são abomináveis ao Senhor, e balança enganosa não é boa.24 Os passos do homem são dirigidos pelo Senhor; como, pois, entenderá o homem o seu caminho?25 Laço é para o homem apropriar-se do que é santo, e só refletir depois de feitos os votos.26 O rei sábio dispersa os ímpios e faz passar sobre eles a roda.27 O espírito do homem é a lâmpada do Senhor, que esquadrinha todo o interior até o mais íntimo do ventre.28 Benignidade e verdade guardam ao rei, e com benignidade sustém ele o seu trono.29 A glória do jovem é a sua força; e a beleza dos velhos são os cabelos brancos.30 Os vergões das feridas são a purificação dos maus, como também as pancadas que penetram até o mais íntimo do ventre.

1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is noisy; and whosoever indulgeth therein will never be wise.2 Like the roaring of a young lion is the dread of a king: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.3 It is an honor for a man to cease from a contest; but every fool enrageth himself.4 Because it is winter’s cold, will the sluggard not plough: when he therefore seeketh in the harvest time, there will be nothing.5 Like deep water is counsel in the heart of man; but the man of understanding will draw it out.6 Most men will proclaim every one his own kindness; but who can find a faithful man?7 The righteous walketh in his integrity: happy will be his children after him.8 A king that sitteth on the throne of justice scattereth away with his eyes all evil.9 Who can say, I have made my heart pure, I am cleansed from my sin.10 Divers weights, and divers measures, are both of them alike an abomination of the Lord.11 Even a child maketh himself known by his doings, whether his work will be pure, and whether it will be upright.12 The ear that heareth, and the eye that seeth, the Lord hath made both of them alike.13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty: open thy eyes, so wilt thou be satisfied with bread.14 It is bad, it is bad, saith the buyer; but when he is gone his way, then doth he boast.15 There is gold, and a multitude of pearls; but a precious vessel are the lips of knowledge.16 Take away his garment, because he hath become surety for a stranger; and on account of a strange woman take a pledge from him.17 Bread of falsehood is pleasant to a man; but afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel–stones.18 Plans are established by counsel; and with wise reflection conduct war.19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that enticeth with his lips.20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother––his lamp shall be quenched in obscure darkness.21 An inheritance hastily gotten at the beginning will at its end not be blessed,22 Do not say, I will recompense evil; but wait on the Lord, and he will help thee.23 Divers weights are an abomination of the Lord; and a deceitful balance is not good.24 From the Lord are the steps of man ordained; but man–– how can he understand his own way?25 It is a snare to a man to sanctify things hastily, and to make inquiry only after having made vows.26 A wise king scattereth the wicked, and turneth over them the threshing–wheel.27 A lamp of the Lord is the soul of man, searching all the inner chambers of the body.28 Kindness and truth will watch over a king, and he will prop up through kindness his throne.29 The ornament of young men is their strength; and the glory of old men is a hoary head.30 The bruises of a wound are cleansing means for the bad, and stripes will reach the inner chambers of the body.
