1 Eis que o Senhor esvazia a terra, e a desola, e transtorna a sua superfície, e dispersa os seus moradores.2 E o que suceder ao povo, assim sucederá ao sacerdote; ao servo, como ao seu senhor; à serva, como à sua senhora; ao comprador, como ao vendedor; ao que empresta, como ao que toma emprestado; ao que dá usura, como ao que paga usura.3 De todo se esvaziará a terra, e de todo será saqueada, porque o Senhor pronunciou esta palavra.4 A terra pranteia e se murcha; o mundo enfraquece e se murcha; enfraquecem os mais altos do povo da terra.5 Na verdade a terra está contaminada por causa dos seus moradores; porquanto têm transgredido as leis, mudado os estatutos, e quebrado a aliança eterna.6 Por isso a maldição tem consumido a terra; e os que habitam nela são desolados; por isso são queimados os moradores da terra, e poucos homens restam.7 Pranteia o mosto, enfraquece a vide; e suspiram todos os alegres de coração.8 Cessa o folguedo dos tamboris, acaba o ruído dos que exultam, e cessa a alegria da harpa.9 Com canções não beberão vinho; a bebida forte será amarga para os que a beberem.10 Demolida está a cidade vazia, todas as casas fecharam, ninguém pode entrar.11 Há lastimoso clamor nas ruas por falta do vinho; toda a alegria se escureceu, desterrou-se o gozo da terra.12 Na cidade só ficou a desolação, a porta ficou reduzida a ruínas.13 Porque assim será no interior da terra, e no meio destes povos, como a sacudidura da oliveira, e como os rabiscos, quando está acabada a vindima.14 Estes alçarão a sua voz, e cantarão com alegria; e por causa da glória do Senhor exultarão desde o mar.15 Por isso glorificai ao Senhor no oriente, e nas ilhas do mar, ao nome do Senhor Deus de Israel.16 Dos confins da terra ouvimos cantar: Glória ao justo. Mas eu disse: Emagreço, emagreço, ai de mim! Os pérfidos têm tratado perfidamente; sim, os pérfidos têm tratado perfidamente.17 O temor, e a cova, e o laço vêm sobre ti, ó morador da terra.18 E será que aquele que fugir da voz de temor cairá na cova, e o que subir da cova o laço o prenderá; porque as janelas do alto estão abertas, e os fundamentos da terra tremem.19 De todo está quebrantada a terra, de todo está rompida a terra, e de todo é movida a terra.20 De todo cambaleará a terra como o ébrio, e será movida e removida como a choça de noite; e a sua transgressão se agravará sobre ela, e cairá, e nunca mais se levantará.21 E será que naquele dia o Senhor castigará os exércitos do alto nas alturas, e os reis da terra sobre a terra.22 E serão ajuntados como presos numa masmorra, e serão encerrados num cárcere; e outra vez serão castigados depois de muitos dias.23 E a lua se envergonhará, e o sol se confundirá quando o Senhor dos Exércitos reinar no monte Sião e em Jerusalém, e perante os seus anciãos gloriosamente.

1 Behold, the Lord maketh empty the land, and layeth it waste, marreth its surface, and scattereth abroad its inhabitants.2 And it shall be with the people as with the priest; with the servant as with his master; with the bondwoman as with her mistress; with the buyer as with the seller; with the lender as with the borrower; with the debtor as with his creditor.3 Empty, emptied out shall be the land, and spoiled, utterly spoiled; for the Lord hath spoken this word.4 The land mourneth, withereth away, the world languishes, withereth away, the high ones of the people of the land do languish.5 For the land was defiled under its inhabitants; because they had transgressed the laws, neglected the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant.6 Therefore hath the curse devoured the land, and they that dwell therein suffer for their guilt; therefore are the inhabitants of the land dried up, and but few men are left.7 The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merry–hearted sigh.8 At rest is the mirth of the tambourines; ceased hath the tumult of the joyful; at rest is the mirth of the harp.9 Amidst singing shall they no more drink wine; bitter shall be the strong drink to those that drink it.10 Broken down is the city of desolation; shut up is every house that none can enter.11 A painful cry for wine is in the streets; darkened is all joy; banished is the mirth of the land.12 Destruction is left in the city, in ruins is beaten the gate.13 For thus shall it be in the midst of the land among the nations, as at the shaking of an olive–tree, as at the gleaning of grains when the vintage is done.14 These shall lift up their voice, they shall sing; because of the majesty of the Lord, they shout aloud from the sea.15 Therefore in the valleys honor ye the Lord; in the isles of the sea, the name of the Lord the God of Israel.16 From the edge of the earth have we heard songs, "Glory to the righteous." But I said, "Evil is mine, evil is mine, woe is me! the treacherous have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous have dealt very treacherously."17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare are upon thee, O inhabitant of the land.18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the call of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be caught in the snare; for the windows from on high are opened, and there quaked the foundations of the earth.19 Crushed entirely is the earth, split in pieces is the earth, shaken to its centre is the earth.20 The earth reeleth to and fro like a drunkard, and vibrateth like a watch–hut; and heavily lieth upon it its transgression; and it shall fall, and not rise again.21 And it shall come to pass on that day, that the Lord will visit punishment on the host of heaven in heaven, and on the kings of the earth upon the earth.22 And they shall be gathered in heaps, as prisoners, in the prison, and shall be shut up in the dungeon, and thus after many days shall they be punished.23 And the moon shall be put to the blush, and the sun be made ashamed; for the Lord of hosts will reign on mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients in glory.
