1 Consolai, consolai o meu povo, diz o vosso Deus.2 Falai benignamente a Jerusalém, e bradai-lhe que já a sua milícia é acabada, que a sua iniquidade está expiada e que já recebeu em dobro da mão do Senhor, por todos os seus pecados.3 Voz do que clama no deserto: Preparai o caminho do Senhor; endireitai no ermo vereda a nosso Deus.4 Todo o vale será exaltado, e todo o monte e todo o outeiro será abatido; e o que é torcido se endireitará, e o que é áspero se aplainará.5 E a glória do Senhor se manifestará, e toda a carne juntamente a verá, pois a boca do Senhor o disse.6 Uma voz diz: Clama; e alguém disse: Que hei de clamar? Toda a carne é erva e toda a sua beleza como a flor do campo.7 Seca-se a erva, e cai a flor, soprando nela o Espírito do Senhor. Na verdade o povo é erva.8 Seca-se a erva, e cai a flor, porém a palavra de nosso Deus subsiste eternamente.9 Tu, ó Sião, que anuncias boas novas, sobe a um monte alto. Tu, ó Jerusalém, que anuncias boas novas, levanta a tua voz fortemente; levanta-a, não temas, e dize às cidades de Judá: Eis aqui está o vosso Deus.10 Eis que o Senhor Deus virá com poder e seu braço dominará por ele; eis que o seu galardão está com ele, e o seu salário diante da sua face.11 Como pastor apascentará o seu rebanho; entre os seus braços recolherá os cordeirinhos, e os levará no seu regaço; as que amamentam guiará suavemente.12 Quem mediu na concha da sua mão as águas, e tomou a medida dos céus aos palmos, e recolheu numa medida o pó da terra e pesou os montes com peso e os outeiros em balanças?13 Quem guiou o Espírito do Senhor, ou como seu conselheiro o ensinou?14 Com quem tomou ele conselho, que lhe desse entendimento, e lhe ensinasse o caminho do juízo, e lhe ensinasse conhecimento, e lhe mostrasse o caminho do entendimento?15 Eis que as nações são consideradas por ele como a gota de um balde, e como o pó miúdo das balanças; eis que ele levanta as ilhas como a uma coisa pequeníssima.16 Nem todo o Líbano basta para o fogo, nem os seus animais bastam para holocaustos.17 Todas as nações são como nada perante ele; ele as considera menos do que nada e como uma coisa vã.18 A quem, pois, fareis semelhante a Deus, ou com que o comparareis?19 O artífice funde a imagem, e o ourives a cobre de ouro, e forja para ela cadeias de prata.20 O empobrecido, que não pode oferecer tanto, escolhe madeira que não se apodrece; artífice sábio busca, para gravar uma imagem que não se pode mover.21 Porventura não sabeis? Porventura não ouvis, ou desde o princípio não se vos notificou, ou não atentastes para os fundamentos da terra?22 Ele é o que está assentado sobre o círculo da terra, cujos moradores são para ele como gafanhotos; é ele o que estende os céus como cortina, e os desenrola como tenda, para neles habitar;23 O que reduz a nada os príncipes, e torna em coisa vã os juízes da terra.24 E mal se tem plantado, mal se tem semeado, e mal se tem enraizado na terra o seu tronco, já se secam, quando ele sopra sobre eles, e um tufão os leva como a pragana.25 A quem, pois, me fareis semelhante, para que eu lhe seja igual? Diz o Santo.26 Levantai ao alto os vossos olhos, e vede quem criou estas coisas; foi aquele que faz sair o exército delas segundo o seu número; ele as chama a todas pelos seus nomes; por causa da grandeza das suas forças, e porquanto é forte em poder, nenhuma delas faltará.27 Por que dizes, ó Jacó, e tu falas, ó Israel: O meu caminho está encoberto ao Senhor, e o meu juízo passa despercebido ao meu Deus?28 Não sabes, não ouviste que o eterno Deus, o Senhor, o Criador dos fins da terra, nem se cansa nem se fatiga? É insondável o seu entendimento.29 Dá força ao cansado, e multiplica as forças ao que não tem nenhum vigor.30 Os jovens se cansarão e se fatigarão, e os moços certamente cairão;31 Mas os que esperam no Senhor renovarão as forças, subirão com asas como águias; correrão, e não se cansarão; caminharão, e não se fatigarão.

1 Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.2 Speak ye comfort to the heart of Jerusalem, and call out unto her, that her time of sorrow is accomplished, that her iniquity is atoned for; for she hath received from the hand of the Lord double for all her sins.3 A voice calleth out, In the wilderness make ye clear the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for God.4 Every valley shall be raised, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the crooked shall be made a straight path, and the rough places a plain:5 And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed; and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.6 A voice saith, Proclaim; and he saith, What shall I proclaim? all flesh is grass, and all its goodliness is as the flower of the field:7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; because the breath of the Lord hath blown upon it; surely the people is grass.8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth; but the word of our God will stand firm for ever.9 Upon a high mountain get thee up, thou that bringest good tidings to Zion; lift up with strength thy voice, thou who bringest good tidings to Jerusalem; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold, here is your God!10 Behold, the Lord Eternal will come with might, and his arm ruleth for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.11 Like a shepherd will he feed his flock: with his arm will he gather the lambs, and in his bosom will he carry them, will he lead gently those that suckle their young.12 Who hath measured in the hollow of his hand the waters, and meted out the heavens with the span, and comprised in a measure the dust of the earth, and weighed in the scale–beam the mountains, and the hills in balances?13 Who hath meted out the Spirit of the Lord? and who was his counsellor that he could have given him information?14 With whom took he counsel, that he gave him understanding, and taught him the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and caused him to know the way of understanding?15 Behold, nations are as a drop out of a bucket, and as the small dust of the balance are they accounted: behold, isles are like the flying dust.16 And Lebanon is not sufficient for burning, and its beasts do not suffice for burnt–offering.17 All the nations are as naught before him; less than nothing, and vanity are they accounted to him.18 To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?19 The graven image the artificer hath cast and the goldsmith hath overspread it with gold, and fabricated on it silver chains.20 He that is skilled in the choice chooseth a wood that will not rot; he seeketh unto himself a skilful workman to prepare a graven image, that shall not be moved.21 Know ye not? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not paid attention to the foundations of the earth?22 It is he that dwelleth above the circle of the earth, while its inhabitants are as grasshoppers; that stretched out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in;23 That bringeth princes to naught; rendering the judges of the earth as vanity.24 Yes, they were not yet planted; yea, they were not yet sown; yea, their stem had not yet taken root in the earth: when he but breathed upon them, and they withered, and the storm–wind carrieth them away as stubble.25 To whom then will ye liken me, that I should be equal to? saith the Holy One.26 Lift up your eyes on high, and see who hath created these? he that bringeth out their host by number; that calleth them all by name; from the Mighty One not one escapeth.27 Why wilt thou say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, My way is hidden from the Lord, and my cause hath passed from the cognizance of my God?28 Dost thou not know? hast thou not heard? The God of everlasting is the Lord, is the Creator of the ends of the earth; he will not be faint and weary; unsearchable is his understanding.29 He giveth to the faint strength; and to the powerless he imparteth much might.30 Though youths should grow faint and be weary, and young men should utterly stumble:31 Yet they that wait upon the Lord shall acquire new strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk, and not become faint.
