1 Então, respondeu Zofar, o naamatita:

2 Porventura, não se dará resposta a esse palavrório?

Acaso, tem razão o tagarela?

3 Será o caso de as tuas parolas fazerem calar os homens?

E zombarás tu sem que ninguém te envergonhe?

4 Pois dizes: A minha doutrina é pura,

e sou limpo aos teus olhos.

5 Oh! Falasse Deus,

e abrisse os seus lábios contra ti,

6 e te revelasse os segredos da sabedoria,

da verdadeira sabedoria, que é multiforme!

Sabe, portanto, que Deus permite seja esquecida parte da tua iniquidade.

7 Porventura, desvendarás os arcanos de Deus

ou penetrarás até à perfeição do Todo-Poderoso?

8 Como as alturas dos céus é a sua sabedoria;

que poderás fazer?

Mais profunda é ela do que o abismo;

que poderás saber?

9 A sua medida é mais longa do que a terra

e mais larga do que o mar.

10 Se ele passa, prende a alguém e chama a juízo,

quem o poderá impedir?

11 Porque ele conhece os homens vãos

e, sem esforço, vê a iniquidade.

12 Mas o homem estúpido se tornará sábio,

quando a cria de um asno montês nascer homem.

13 Se dispuseres o coração

e estenderes as mãos para Deus;

14 se lançares para longe a iniquidade da tua mão

e não permitires habitar na tua tenda a injustiça,

15 então, levantarás o rosto sem mácula,

estarás seguro e não temerás.

16 Pois te esquecerás dos teus sofrimentos

e deles só terás lembrança como de águas que passaram.

17 A tua vida será mais clara que o meio-dia;

ainda que lhe haja trevas, serão como a manhã.

18 Sentir-te-ás seguro, porque haverá esperança;

olharás em derredor e dormirás tranquilo.

19 Deitar-te-ás, e ninguém te espantará;

e muitos procurarão obter o teu favor.

20 Mas os olhos dos perversos desfalecerão,

o seu refúgio perecerá;

sua esperança será o render do espírito.

1 And Zophar the Naamathite answered and said,

2 Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man of much talk be justified?

3 Should thy fictions make men hold their peace? and shouldest thou mock, and no one make {thee} ashamed?

4 For thou sayest, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes.

5 But oh that +God would speak, and open his lips against thee;

6 And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, how that they are the double of what is realised; and know that +God passeth by {much} of thine iniquity!

7 Canst thou by searching find out +God? canst thou find out the Almighty to perfection?

8 {It is as} the heights of heaven; what wilt thou do? deeper than Sheol; what canst thou know?

9 The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

10 If he pass by, and shut up, and call to judgment, who can hinder him?

11 For he knoweth vain men, and seeth wickedness when {man} doth not consider it;

12 Yet a senseless man will make bold, though man be born {like} the foal of a wild ass.

13 If thou prepare thy heart and stretch out thy hands toward him,

14 If thou put far away the iniquity which is in thy hand, and let not wrong dwell in thy tents;

15 Surely then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot, and thou shalt be stedfast and shalt not fear:

16 For thou shalt forget misery; as waters that are passed away shalt thou remember it;

17 And life shall arise brighter than noonday; though thou be enshrouded in darkness, thou shalt be as the morning,

18 And thou shalt have confidence, because there shall be hope; and having searched about {thee}, thou shalt take rest in safety.

19 Yea, thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid; and many shall seek thy favour.

20 But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and {all} refuge shall vanish from them, and their hope {shall be} the breathing out of life.

1 Então respondeu Zofar naamatita:

2 Não se dará resposta à multidão de palavras? Acaso será justificado o falador?

3 Porventura as tuas jactâncias farão calar as gentes? Quando zombares, ninguém te fará envergonhar?

4 Pois dizes: A minha doutrina é pura, E limpo sou aos teus olhos.

5 Porém oxalá que Deus falasse, E abrisse os seus lábios contra ti;

6 E te mostrasse os segredos da sabedoria, Pois complicada é a verdadeira sabedoria. Sabe, portanto, que Deus te remite algo da tua iniqüidade.

7 Poderás descobrir as cousas profundas de Deus? Poderás descobrir perfeitamente o Todo-poderoso?

8 Como as alturas do céu é a sua sabedoria; que poderás fazer? Mais profunda do que o Cheol; que poderás saber?

9 A sua medida é mais comprida do que a terra, E mais larga do que o mar.

10 Se ele passar, prender a alguém E chamar a juízo, quem o poderá proibir?

11 Pois conhece os homens vãos, E vê sem esforço a iniqüidade,

12 Mas um homem vão se tornará sábio, Quando a cria dum asno montês nascer homem.

13 Se tu preparares o teu coração, E estenderes as mãos para ele;

14 Se lançares para longe a iniqüidade da tua mão, E não habitar a iniqüidade nas tuas tendas;

15 Então na verdade levantarás o teu rosto sem mácula; Sim estarás firme, e não temerás;

16 Pois tu te esquecerás da tua miséria; E te lembrarás dela como de águas que passaram.

17 A tua vida será mais clara do que o meio dia; Ainda que haja escuridão, será como a manhã.

18 Estarás firme, porque há esperança; Olharás ao redor de ti, e pousarás seguro.

19 Deitar-te-ás, e ninguém te amedrontará; E muitos procurarão obter o teu favor.

20 Mas os olhos dos iníquos desfalecerão, Não lhes ficará refúgio, E a sua esperança será o render do espírito.
