1 Chama agora! Haverá alguém que te atenda?
E para qual dos santos anjos te virarás?
2 Porque a ira do louco o destrói,
e o zelo do tolo o mata.
3 Bem vi eu o louco lançar raízes;
mas logo declarei maldita a sua habitação.
4 Seus filhos estão longe do socorro,
são espezinhados às portas, e não há quem os livre.
5 A sua messe, o faminto a devora
e até do meio dos espinhos a arrebata;
e o intrigante abocanha os seus bens.
6 Porque a aflição não vem do pó,
e não é da terra que brota o enfado.
7 Mas o homem nasce para o enfado,
como as faíscas das brasas voam para cima.
8 Quanto a mim, eu buscaria a Deus
e a ele entregaria a minha causa;
9 ele faz coisas grandes e inescrutáveis
e maravilhas que não se podem contar;
10 faz chover sobre a terra
e envia águas sobre os campos,
11 para pôr os abatidos num lugar alto
e para que os enlutados se alegrem da maior ventura.
12 Ele frustra as maquinações dos astutos,
para que as suas mãos não possam realizar seus projetos.
13 Ele apanha os sábios na sua própria astúcia;
e o conselho dos que tramam se precipita.
14 Eles de dia encontram as trevas;
ao meio-dia andam como de noite, às apalpadelas.
15 Porém Deus salva da espada que lhes sai da boca,
salva o necessitado da mão do poderoso.
16 Assim, há esperança para o pobre,
e a iniquidade tapa a sua própria boca.
17 Bem-aventurado é o homem a quem Deus disciplina;
não desprezes, pois, a disciplina do Todo-Poderoso.
18 Porque ele faz a ferida e ele mesmo a ata;
ele fere, e as suas mãos curam.
19 De seis angústias te livrará,
e na sétima o mal te não tocará.
20 Na fome te livrará da morte;
na guerra, do poder da espada.
21 Do açoite da língua estarás abrigado
e, quando vier a assolação, não a temerás.
22 Da assolação e da fome te rirás
e das feras da terra não terás medo.
23 Porque até com as pedras do campo terás a tua aliança,
e os animais da terra viverão em paz contigo.
24 Saberás que a paz é a tua tenda,
percorrerás as tuas possessões, e nada te faltará.
25 Saberás também que se multiplicará a tua descendência,
e a tua posteridade, como a erva da terra.
26 Em robusta velhice entrarás para a sepultura,
como se recolhe o feixe de trigo a seu tempo.
27 Eis que isto já o havemos inquirido, e assim é;
ouve-o e medita nisso para teu bem.
1 Call, I pray thee! Is there any that answereth thee? and to which of the holy ones wilt thou turn?
2 For vexation killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the simple.
3 I myself saw the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation.
4 His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, and there is no deliverer:
5 Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh even out of the thorns; and the snare gapeth for his substance.
6 For evil cometh not forth from the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;
7 For man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upwards.
8 But as for me I will seek unto *God, and unto God commit my cause;
9 Who doeth great things and unsearchable, marvellous things without number;
10 Who giveth rain on the face of the earth, and sendeth waters on the face of the fields;
11 Setting up on high those that are low; and mourners are exalted to prosperity.
12 He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, and their hands carry not out the enterprise.
13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; and the counsel of the wily is carried headlong:
14 They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope at midday as in the night.
15 And he saveth the needy from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.
16 So the poor hath what he hopeth for, and unrighteousness stoppeth her mouth.
17 Behold, happy is the man whom +God correcteth; therefore despise not the chastening of the Almighty.
18 For he maketh sore, and bindeth up; he woundeth, and his hands make whole.
19 He will deliver thee in six troubles, and in seven there shall no evil touch thee.
20 In famine he will redeem thee from death, and in war from the power of the sword.
21 Thou shalt be hidden from the scourge of the tongue; and thou shalt not be afraid of destruction when it cometh.
22 At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh, and of the beasts of the earth thou shalt not be afraid.
23 For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
24 And thou shalt know that thy tent is in peace; and thou wilt survey thy fold, and miss nothing.
25 And thou shalt know that thy seed is numerous, and thine offspring as the herb of the earth.
26 Thou shalt come to the grave in a ripe age, as a shock of corn is brought in in its season.
27 Behold this, we have searched it out, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thyself.

5 A sua messe é devorada pelo faminto, Que a arrebata até dentre os espinhos, E o laço abre as fauces para a fazenda deles.
6 Pois a iniqüidade não procede do pó, Nem da terra brota a aflição;
7 Mas o homem nasce para a aflição, Tão certamente como as faíscas voam para cima.
8 Porém quanto a mim, eu buscaria a Deus, E a Deus entregaria a minha causa,
9 O qual faz cousas grandes e inescrutáveis, Maravilhas sem número.
10 Ele faz chover sobre a terra, E envia águas sobre os campos,
11 De modo que põe os abatidos num lugar alto; E os que choram são exaltados à segurança,
12 Ele frustra as maquinações dos astutos, De maneira que as suas mãos não possam acabar o seu empreendimento.
13 Ele apanha os sábios na sua astúcia, O conselho dos perversos é precipitado.
14 De dia se acham em trevas, E ao meio dia andam às apalpadelas como de noite.
15 Porém Deus salva da espada que sai da boca deles, Ele salva o necessitado da mão do poderoso.
16 Assim há esperança para o pobre, E a iniqüidade tapa a boca.
17 Eis que feliz é o homem a quem Deus reprova, Portanto não desprezes a correção do Todo-poderoso.
18 Pois ele faz a ferida, e a ata; Ele fere, e as suas mãos curam.
19 Em seis tribulações ele te livrará, E em sete o mal não te tocará.
20 Na fome ele te redimirá da morte, E na guerra do poder da espada.
21 Estará escondido do açoite da língua, E não terás medo da assolação quando chegar.
22 Da assolação e da penúria te rirás, E não terás medo das feras da terra.
23 Pois terás aliança com as pedras do campo, E as feras do campo estarão em paz contigo.
24 Saberás que a tua tenda está em paz, Visitarás o teu rebanho, e nada te faltará.
25 Também saberás que se multiplicará a tua descendência, E a tua posteridade como a erva da terra.
26 Em boa velhice entrarás na sepultura, Como se recolhe a meda de trigo a seu tempo.
27 Eis que isso, nós o temos provado, assim o é; Ouve-o, e conhece-o tu para o teu bem.
