1 E, descendo certos homens da Judeia ensinavam aos irmãos e diziam: A menos que sejais circuncidados, conforme o método de Moisés, não podeis ser salvos.

2 Portanto, tendo Paulo e Barnabé uma não pequena dissensão e disputa contra eles, determinaram que Paulo e Barnabé, e alguns dentre eles, deveriam subir aos apóstolos e anciãos de Jerusalém, para tratar a respeito daquela questão.

3 E eles, providos para o caminho pela igreja, passaram pela Fenícia e por Samaria, declarando a conversão dos gentios, e eles causavam muita alegria a todos os irmãos.

4 E, chegando a Jerusalém, eles foram recebidos pela igreja e pelos apóstolos e anciãos e lhes declararam todas as coisas que Deus tinha feito com eles.

5 Mas levantaram-se alguns da seita dos fariseus, que haviam crido, dizendo que era necessário circuncidá-los, e ordená-los a guardarem a lei de Moisés.

6 E os apóstolos e os anciãos se reuniram para considerar este assunto.

7 E, havendo muita discussão, Pedro levantou-se e disse-lhes: Homens e irmãos, vós sabeis que há um bom tempo Deus me escolheu dentre vós, para que por meio de minha boca os gentios ouvissem a palavra do evangelho e cressem.

8 E Deus, que conhece os corações, lhes deu testemunho, dando-lhes o Espírito Santo, assim como ele fez a nós;

9 e não põe diferença entre nós e eles, purificando o seu coração pela fé.

10 Agora, pois, por que tentais a Deus, pondo um jugo sobre a cerviz dos discípulos, que nem nossos pais nem nós somos capazes de carregar?

11 Mas cremos que pela graça do Senhor Jesus Cristo nós seremos salvos, como eles também.

12 Então, toda a multidão permaneceu em silêncio, ouvindo a Barnabé e a Paulo, que declaravam os milagres e maravilhas que Deus havia feito entre os gentios por meio deles.

13 E, após terem feito silêncio, Tiago respondeu, dizendo: Homens e irmãos, ouvi-me.

14 Simão declarou como Deus primeiro visitou os gentios, para tomar deles um povo para o seu nome.

15 E com isto concordam as palavras dos profetas, como está escrito:

16 Depois disto, eu voltarei e reedificarei o tabernáculo de Davi, que está caído; e o edificarei novamente das suas ruínas e eu o estabelecerei;

17 para que o resto dos homens busque ao Senhor, e todos os gentios sobre os quais o meu nome é invocado, diz o Senhor, que faz todas estas coisas.

18 Todas as suas obras são conhecidas a Deus desde o início do mundo.

19 Por isso, a minha decisão é que nós não perturbemos aqueles que, dentre os gentios, se convertem a Deus,

20 mas que escrevamos a eles, para que eles se abstenham das contaminações dos ídolos, e da fornicação, e das coisas estranguladas e do sangue.

21 Porque Moisés tem quem o proclame desde os tempos antigos em cada cidade, sendo lido nas sinagogas todo o dia do shabat.

22 Então, agradou aos apóstolos e aos anciãos, com toda a igreja, enviar homens escolhidos de seu próprio grupo a Antioquia com Paulo e Barnabé, a saber: Judas, chamado Barsabás, e Silas, principais homens entre os irmãos;

23 e escreveram cartas, por intermédio deles, sobre este assunto: Os apóstolos, e os anciãos, e os irmãos, enviam saudação aos irmãos dentre os gentios que estão em Antioquia, Síria, e Cilícia;

24 portanto, ouvimos que alguns que saíram dentre nós vos perturbaram com palavras, e transtornaram as vossas almas, dizendo que deveis circuncidar-vos e guardar a lei, aos quais nós não damos tal mandamento;

25 pareceu-nos bem, reunidos em concordância, enviar-lhes homens escolhidos com os nossos amados Barnabé e Paulo,

26 homens que arriscaram suas vidas pelo nome de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo.

27 Enviamos, portanto, Judas e Silas, os quais vos anunciarão as mesmas coisas de boca.

28 Porque pareceu bem ao Espírito Santo, e a nós, não vos impor mais carga alguma, exceto estas coisas necessárias:

29 Que vos abstenhais de alimentos oferecidos aos ídolos, e do sangue, e das coisas estranguladas, e da fornicação; resguardando-vos dos mesmos, fareis bem. Que passem bem.

30 Então, tendo sido despedidos, eles chegaram à Antioquia, e ajuntando a multidão, eles entregaram a carta;

31 e, quando a leram, eles regozijaram-se pela consolação.

32 E, Judas e Silas, que também eram profetas, exortaram os irmãos com muitas palavras, e os confirmaram.

33 E, tendo permanecido por algum tempo, foram despedidos em paz pelos irmãos para os apóstolos.

34 Mas agradou a Silas ficar ali.

35 E Paulo e Barnabé continuaram em Antioquia, ensinando e pregando a palavra do Senhor com muitos outros também.

36 E alguns dias depois, Paulo disse a Barnabé: Retornemos para visitar nossos irmãos por todas as cidades em que já pregamos a palavra do Senhor, e ver o que eles fazem.

37 E Barnabé decidiu levar com eles a João, cujo sobrenome era Marcos.

38 Mas Paulo não achou bom levar com eles aquele que desde a Panfília se tinha apartado deles e não os acompanhou naquela obra.

39 E a discussão foi tão forte entre eles, que eles se separaram um do outro. E assim Barnabé tomou Marcos, e navegou para Chipre;

40 e Paulo, escolhendo a Silas, partiu recomendado pelos irmãos à graça de Deus.

41 E ele passou pela Síria e Cilícia, confirmando as igrejas.

1 And certain ones who came down from Judea taught the brothers, [saying], Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.

2 Therefore dissension and not a little disputation occurring by Paul and Barnabas, they appointed Paul and Barnabas and certain others of them to go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders about this question.

3 And indeed being set forward by the church, they passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the nations. And they caused great joy to all the brothers.

4 And arriving in Jerusalem, they were received by the church, and [by] the apostles and elders. And [they] declared all things that God had done with them.

5 But some of those from the sect of the Pharisees, having believed, rose up, saying, It was necessary to circumcise them and to command [them] to keep the law of Moses.

6 And the apostles and elders were assembled to see about this matter.

7 And after much disputing, Peter rose up and said to them, Men, brothers, you recognize that from ancient days God chose among us [that] through my mouth the nations [should] hear the word of the gospel, and believe.

8 And God, who knows the hearts, bore them witness, giving them the Holy Spirit even as to us.

9 And He put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

10 Now therefore why do you tempt God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples, a yoke which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

11 But we believe that through the grace of [the] Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, according to which manner they also believed.

12 And all the multitude kept silent and listened to Barnabas and Paul declaring what miracles and wonders God had worked among the nations through them.

13 And after they were silent, James answered, saying, Men, brothers, listen to me.

14 Even as Simon has declared [how] God [at] the first visited the nations to take out of them a people for His name.

15 And the words of the prophets agree to this; as it is written,

16 After this I will return and will build again the tabernacle of David [which] has fallen down; and I will build again its ruins, and I will set it up,

17 so those men who are left might seek after the Lord, and all the nations on whom My name has been called, says the Lord, who does all these things.

18 All His works are known to God from eternity.

19 Therefore my judgment is that we do not trouble those who have turned to God from among the nations,

20 but that we write to them that they should abstain from pollutions of idols, and [from] fornication, and [from] things strangled, and from blood.

21 For Moses from ages past has those in every city proclaiming him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.

22 Then it pleased the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men from them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; Judas, whose last name was Barsabas; and Silas, chief men among the brothers.

23 And they wrote these things by their hand: The apostles and elders and brothers [send] greeting to the brothers, from [the] nations in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia.

24 Because we have heard that certain ones who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, Be circumcised and keep the law! (to whom we gave no such command);

25 it seemed [good] to us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul,

26 men who have given up their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

27 Therefore we have sent Judas and Silas, who will also announce [to you] the same things by word.

28 For it seemed [good] to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay on you no greater burden than these necessary things:

29 that you abstain from meats offered to idols, and [from] blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication; from which, if you keep yourselves, you shall do well. Be prospered.

30 Then indeed they being let go, they came to Antioch. And gathering the multitude, [they] delivered the letter.

31 And when they had read [it], they rejoiced at the comfort.

32 And Judas and Silas, also being prophets themselves, exhorted the brothers with many words and confirmed [them].

33 And remaining for a time, they were let go in peace from the brothers to the apostles.

34 But it pleased Silas to remain there.

35 Also Paul and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the gospel, the Word of the Lord, with many others also.

36 And some days afterward, Paul said to Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brothers in every city where we have announced the Word of the Lord, to see] how they are holding to it.

37 And Barnabas determined to take with [them] John, he being called Mark.

38 But Paul thought it well not to take that one with [them], he having withdrawn from them from Pamphylia, and did not go with them to the work.

39 Then there was sharp feeling, so as to separate them from each other. And taking Mark, Barnabas sailed to Cyprus.

40 But choosing Silas, Paul went out, being commended by the brothers to the grace of God,

41 passing through Syria and Cilicia, making the churches strong.
