1 Porque o Senhor se compadecerá de Jacó e voltará a escolher Israel, estabelecendo-os na sua própria terra. A eles se juntarão os estrangeiros, e estes farão parte da casa de Jacó. 2 Os povos os pegarão e os levarão aos lugares deles, e a casa de Israel terá esses povos por servos e servas, na terra do Senhor. Os israelitas terão como prisioneiros aqueles que os tinham aprisionado e dominarão os seus opressores.
3 Povo de Israel, no dia em que Deus vier a dar-lhe descanso do sofrimento, das angústias e da dura servidão que lhe foi imposta, 4 você proferirá esta sátira contra o rei da Babilônia:
Como cessou o opressor!
Como acabou a tirania!
5 O Senhor quebrou
o bastão dos ímpios
e o cetro dos dominadores,
6 que feriam os povos com furor,
com golpes incessantes,
e com ira dominavam as nações,
com perseguição irreprimível.
7 Agora toda a terra descansa
e está sossegada.
Todos dão gritos de alegria.
8 Até os ciprestes se alegram
por causa de você,
e os cedros do Líbano exclamam:
"Desde que você caiu,
ninguém mais vem para nos cortar."
9 Lá embaixo, o mundo dos mortos
se agita por causa de você,
para sair ao seu encontro
quando você chegar.
Por sua causa,
ele desperta as sombras
e todos os príncipes da terra,
e faz levantar dos seus tronos
todos os reis das nações.
10 Todos estes começam a falar
e se dirigem a você, dizendo:
"Então também você
enfraqueceu como nós?
E você se tornou como um de nós?
11 A sua soberba foi jogada
no abismo,
junto com o som das suas harpas.
A sua cama é de larvas
e os vermes são a sua coberta."
12 Veja como você caiu do céu,
ó estrela da manhã, filho da alva!
Veja como você
foi lançado por terra,
você que debilitava as nações!
13 Você pensava assim:
"Subirei ao céu,
exaltarei o meu trono
acima das estrelas
e me assentarei
no monte da congregação,
nas extremidades do Norte.
14 Subirei acima
das mais altas nuvens
e serei semelhante ao Altíssimo."
15 Mas você descerá
ao mundo dos mortos,
no mais profundo do abismo.
16 Os que virem você
olharão atentamente
e perguntarão:
"É este o homem
que fazia a terra tremer
e que abalava os reinos?
17 Que transformava
o mundo num deserto
e arrasava as suas cidades?
Que não deixava os seus prisioneiros
voltarem para casa?"
18 Todos os reis das nações,
sim, todos jazem com honra,
cada um em seu túmulo.
19 Mas você é lançado fora
da sua sepultura,
como um renovo abominável,
coberto de mortos
traspassados à espada
e que descem à cova de pedras,
como um cadáver pisoteado.
20 Você não se reunirá
com eles na sepultura,
porque você destruiu
a sua própria terra
e matou o seu próprio povo.
A descendência dos malfeitores
jamais será nomeada.
21 Preparem a matança
dos filhos dele
por causa da maldade de seus pais,
para que esses não se levantem,
tomem posse da terra,
e encham o mundo de cidades.
22 — Eu me levantarei contra eles, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos. Acabarei com o nome e os sobreviventes da Babilônia, com os seus descendentes e a sua posteridade, diz o Senhor. 23 Farei dela a habitação de ouriços e um lugar de pântanos. Vou varrê-la com a vassoura da destruição, diz o Senhor dos Exércitos.
24 O Senhor dos Exércitos jurou, dizendo:
"Como pensei, assim será,
e, como determinei,
assim acontecerá.
25 Esmagarei a Assíria na minha terra
e nas minhas montanhas a pisarei,
para que o seu jugo
se afaste de Israel,
e a sua carga
se desvie dos ombros dele.
26 Este é o plano que foi elaborado
para toda a terra;
e esta é a mão que está estendida
sobre todas as nações."
27 Pois, se o Senhor dos Exércitos
o determinou,
quem poderá invalidá-lo?
Se a mão dele está estendida,
quem a fará voltar atrás?
28 No ano em que o rei Acaz morreu, foi pronunciada esta sentença:
29 "Não se alegrem,
todos vocês da Filístia,
por estar quebrada
a vara que os feria.
Porque da raiz da cobra
sairá uma víbora,
e o seu fruto
será uma serpente voadora.
30 Os primogênitos dos pobres
serão apascentados,
e os necessitados
se deitarão em segurança.
Porém farei morrer de fome
a sua raiz, ó Filístia,
e os seus sobreviventes
serão mortos.
31 Uive, ó portão! Grite, ó cidade!
Todos vocês da Filístia,
tremam de medo!
Porque do Norte vem fumaça,
e ninguém há que se afaste
das suas fileiras."
32 Que resposta se dará, então,
aos mensageiros daquele povo?
"O Senhor fundou Sião,
e nela os aflitos do seu povo
encontram refúgio."

1 For LORD will have compassion on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land. And the sojourner shall join himself with them, and they shall cling to the house of Jacob.2 And the peoples shall take them, and bring them to their place. And the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of LORD for servants and for handmaids. And they shall take them captive whose captives they were, and they shal3 And it shall come to pass in the day that LORD shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy trouble, and from the hard service in which thou were made to serve,4 that thou shall take up this parable against the king of Babylon, and say, How has the oppressor ceased, the golden city ceased!5 LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers,6 who smote the peoples in wrath with a continual stroke, who ruled the nations in anger, with a persecution that none restrained.7 The whole earth is at rest, [and] is quiet. They break forth into singing.8 Yea, the fir trees rejoice at thee, [and] the cedars of Lebanon, [saying], Since thou are laid low, no hewer has come up against us.9 Sheol from beneath is moved for thee, to meet thee at thy coming. It stirs up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth. It has raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.10 They shall all answer and say to thee, Have thou also become weak as we? Have thou become like us?11 Thy pomp is brought down to Sheol, [and] the noise of thy viols. The worm is spread under thee, and worms cover thee.12 How thou are fallen from heaven, O day-star, son of the morning! How thou are cut down to the ground, who laid the nations low!13 And thou said in thy heart, I will ascend into heaven. I will exalt my throne above the stars of God, and I will sit upon the mount of congregation, in the outermost parts of the north.14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds. I will make myself like the Most High.15 Yet thou shall be brought down to Sheol, to the utmost parts of the pit.16 Those who see thee shall gaze at thee. They shall consider thee, [saying], Is this the man who made the earth to tremble, who shook kingdoms,17 who made the world as a wilderness, and overthrew the cities of it, who did not let loose his prisoners to their home?18 All the kings of the nations, all of them, sleep in glory, each one in his own house.19 But thou are cast forth away from thy sepulcher like an abominable branch, clothed with the slain, who are thrust through with the sword, who go down to the stones of the pit, as a dead body trodden under foot.20 Thou shall not be joined with them in burial, because thou have destroyed thy land. Thou have slain thy people. The seed of evil-doers shall not be named forever.21 Prepare ye slaughter for his sons for the iniquity of their fathers, that they not rise up, and possess the earth, and fill the face of the world with cities.22 And I will rise up against them, says LORD of hosts, and cut off from Babylon name and remnant, and son and son's son, says LORD.23 I will also make it a possession for the porcupine, and pools of water. And I will sweep it with the broom of destruction, says LORD of hosts.24 LORD of hosts has sworn, saying, Surely, as I have thought, so shall it come to pass, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand,25 that I will break the Assyrian in my land, and tread him under foot upon my mountains. Then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulder.26 This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth, and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations.27 For LORD of hosts has purposed, and who shall annul it? And his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?28 In the year that king Ahaz died was this burden.29 Rejoice not, O Philistia, all of thee, because the rod that smote thee is broken. For out of the serpent's root shall come forth an adder, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent.30 And the firstborn of the poor shall feed, and the needy shall lie down in safety. And I will kill thy root with famine, and thy remnant shall be slain.31 Howl, O gate, cry, O city. Thou are melted away, O Philistia, all of thee. For there comes a smoke out of the north, and there is no straggler in his ranks.32 What then shall [a man] answer the messengers of the nation? That LORD has founded Zion, and in her shall the afflicted of his people take refuge.
