1 Por fim, Jó falou e amaldiçoou o dia de seu nascimento. 2 Disse ele:

3 "Apagado seja o dia em que nasci

e a noite em que fui concebido.

4 Transforme-se esse dia em escuridão;

Deus, lá do alto, o ignore,

e luz nenhuma brilhe sobre ele.

5 Domine esse dia a escuridão absoluta;

uma nuvem negra o cubra,

e densa escuridão o encha de terror.

6 Apodere-se dessa noite a escuridão;

nunca mais seja contada entre os dias do ano,

nunca mais seja incluída entre os meses.

7 Sim, estéril seja essa noite,

desprovida de toda a alegria.

8 Amaldiçoem esse dia os que vivem a amaldiçoar,

aqueles que podem despertar o Leviatã.*3.8 A identificação do Leviatã é controversa; as propostas vão desde uma criatura terrestre até um monstro marinho mítico da literatura antiga.

9 Escureçam-se suas estrelas matutinas;

espere o dia pela luz, mas em vão,

e jamais veja a luz do amanhecer.

10 Amaldiçoado seja esse dia

por não fechar o ventre de minha mãe,

por permitir que eu nascesse,

para presenciar todo este sofrimento.

11 "Por que eu não nasci morto?

Por que não morri ao sair do ventre?

12 Por que me deitaram no colo de minha mãe?

Por que ela me amamentou no seio?

13 Se eu tivesse morrido ao nascer, agora estaria em paz;

sim, dormiria e repousaria.

14 Descansaria com os reis da terra e seus conselheiros,

cujos edifícios agora estão em ruínas.

15 Descansaria com os príncipes, ricos em ouro,

cujos palácios eram cheios de prata.

16 Por que não me sepultaram como uma criança que nasceu morta,

como um bebê que nunca viu a luz?

17 Pois na morte os perversos já não causam problemas,

e os cansados repousam.

18 Até mesmo os cativos encontram sossego nela,

onde não há capatazes para ameaçá-los.

19 Os ricos e os pobres estão ali,

e o escravo se vê livre de seu senhor.

20 "Por que conceder luz aos miseráveis

e vida aos amargurados?

21 Anseiam pela morte, e ela não vem;

cavam à procura dela mais que de tesouros ocultos.

22 Enchem-se de alegria quando enfim morrem

e exultam quando chegam ao túmulo.

23 Por que conceder luz aos que não têm futuro,

aos que Deus cercou de todos os lados?

24 De tanto gemer, não consigo comer;

meus gritos de dor se derramam como água.

25 O que sempre temi veio sobre mim,

o que tanto receava me aconteceu.

26 Não tenho paz, nem sossego;

não tenho descanso, só aflição".

11 Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly? 12 Why did the knees prevent me? or why the breasts that I should suck? 13 For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then had I been at rest, 14 With kings and counsellors of the earth, which built desolate places for themselves; 15 Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver: 16 Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light. 17 There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary be at rest.*3.17 weary: Heb. wearied in strength 18 There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor. 19 The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.
