1 Assim me disse o Senhor: "Vá e compre um vaso de barro. Depois, peça a alguns líderes do povo e dos sacerdotes que o acompanhem. 2 Vá ao depósito de lixo no vale de Ben-Hinom, que fica junto ao portão dos Cacos, e proclame esta mensagem: 3 ‘Ouçam esta mensagem do Senhor, reis de Judá e habitantes de Jerusalém! Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: Trarei calamidade sobre este lugar, calamidade tão terrível que fará tinir os ouvidos de quem ouvir a respeito!

4 "‘Pois o povo me abandonou e transformou este vale num lugar de perversidade. Queimam incenso a deuses estrangeiros, ídolos até então desconhecidos desta geração, de seus antepassados e dos reis de Judá. Encheram este lugar com o sangue de crianças inocentes. 5 Construíram lugares de adoração a Baal e lhe queimaram os filhos como sacrifício. Jamais ordenei tamanha maldade; nunca me passou pela mente! 6 Portanto, tomem cuidado, diz o Senhor, pois está chegando o dia em que este lugar não se chamará mais Tofete, nem vale de Ben-Hinom, mas vale da Matança.

7 "‘Pois eu transtornarei os planos minuciosos de Judá e Jerusalém. Permitirei que seu povo seja massacrado por exércitos invasores e deixarei seus cadáveres para servirem de alimento para os abutres e os animais selvagens. 8 Transformarei Jerusalém em um monte de escombros; será um monumento à sua tolice. Todos que passarem por lá ficarão pasmos e abrirão a boca de espanto quando virem suas ruínas. 9 Farei os inimigos cercarem a cidade, até que acabe toda a comida. Então, os que estiverem presos dentro dela comerão os próprios filhos, filhas e amigos. Serão levados ao mais absoluto desespero’.

10 "Então, Jeremias, você quebrará o vaso à vista desses homens 11 e lhes dirá: ‘Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos: Como este vaso está despedaçado, assim despedaçarei o povo de Judá e o povo de Jerusalém, e não haverá quem possa restaurá-los. Enterrarão os corpos aqui em Tofete, até que não haja mais espaço. 12 Assim farei a este lugar e a seu povo, diz o Senhor. Farei a cidade ficar contaminada como Tofete. 13 Sim, todas as casas de Jerusalém, incluindo o palácio dos reis de Judá, se tornarão como Tofete, todas as casas em que vocês queimaram incenso nos terraços para adorar as estrelas e apresentaram ofertas derramadas para seus ídolos’".

14 Então Jeremias voltou de Tofete, onde havia anunciado essa mensagem, e parou diante do templo do Senhor. Ali, disse ao povo: 15 "Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: Trarei calamidade sobre esta cidade e sobre os povoados ao redor conforme prometi, pois vocês se recusaram teimosamente a me ouvir".

1 Thus said Yahweh, "Go, and buy a potter’s earthen container, and take some of the elders of the people and of the elders of the priests; 2 and go out to the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the gate Harsith, and proclaim there the words that I will tell you. 3 Say, ‘Hear Yahweh’s word, kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel says, "Behold, I will bring evil on this place, which whoever hears, his ears will tingle. 4 Because they have forsaken me, and have defiled this place, and have burned incense in it to other gods that they didn’t know—they, their fathers, and the kings of Judah—and have filled this place with the blood of innocents, 5 and have built the high places of Baal to burn their children in the fire for burnt offerings to Baal, which I didn’t command, nor speak, which didn’t even enter into my mind. 6 Therefore, behold, the days come," says Yahweh, "that this place will no more be called ‘Topheth’, nor ‘The Valley of the son of Hinnom’, but ‘The valley of Slaughter’.

7 "‘"I will make the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem void in this place. I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of those who seek their life. I will give their dead bodies to be food for the birds of the sky and for the animals of the earth. 8 I will make this city an astonishment and a hissing. Everyone who passes by it will be astonished and hiss because of all its plagues. 9 I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters. They will each eat the flesh of his friend in the siege and in the distress with which their enemies, and those who seek their life, will distress them."’

10 "Then you shall break the container in the sight of the men who go with you, 11 and shall tell them, ‘Yahweh of Armies says: "Even so I will break this people and this city as one breaks a potter’s vessel, that can’t be made whole again. They will bury in Topheth until there is no place to bury. 12 This is what I will do to this place," says Yahweh, "and to its inhabitants, even making this city as Topheth. 13 The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah, which are defiled, will be as the place of Topheth, even all the houses on whose roofs they have burned incense to all the army of the sky and have poured out drink offerings to other gods."’"

14 Then Jeremiah came from Topheth, where Yahweh had sent him to prophesy, and he stood in the court of Yahweh’s house, and said to all the people: 15 "Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel says, ‘Behold, I will bring on this city and on all its towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have made their neck stiff, that they may not hear my words.’"
