1 Naquele mesmo ano, o quarto ano do reinado de Zedequias, rei de Judá, no mês de agosto, Hananias, filho de Azur, um profeta de Gibeom, se dirigiu a mim publicamente no templo, diante de todos os sacerdotes e do povo, e disse: 2 "Assim diz o Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel: ‘Removerei do seu pescoço o jugo do rei da Babilônia. 3 Dentro de dois anos, trarei de volta todos os objetos preciosos do templo que o rei Nabucodonosor levou para a Babilônia. 4 Também trarei de volta Joaquim, filho de Jeoaquim, rei de Judá, e todos os outros exilados de Judá levados para a Babilônia. Certamente quebrarei o jugo que o rei da Babilônia colocou sobre seu pescoço. Eu, o Senhor, falei!’".

5 Jeremias respondeu a Hananias diante de todos os sacerdotes e do povo que estava no templo do Senhor: 6 "Amém! Que sua profecia se cumpra! Espero que o Senhor faça tudo que você anunciou. Espero que ele traga de volta da Babilônia os objetos preciosos do templo e todos os exilados. 7 Agora, porém, ouça as palavras que lhe digo na presença de todo o povo. 8 Os antigos profetas, que vieram antes de você e de mim, falaram contra muitas nações e grandes reinos, e sempre advertiram a respeito de guerra, calamidade e doença. 9 Portanto, um profeta que anuncia paz precisa esperar que suas previsões se cumpram antes de ser considerado, de fato, enviado pelo Senhor".

10 Então o profeta Hananias tirou do pescoço de Jeremias o jugo e o quebrou em pedaços. 11 E disse novamente a todo o povo: "Assim diz o Senhor: ‘Assim como este jugo foi quebrado, dentro de dois anos quebrarei o jugo de opressão de todas as nações que agora estão sujeitas a Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia’". Depois disso, Jeremias saiu dali.

12 Logo após o confronto com Hananias, o Senhor deu esta mensagem a Jeremias: 13 "Vá e diga a Hananias: ‘Assim diz o Senhor: Você quebrou o jugo de madeira, mas em seu lugar colocou um jugo de ferro. 14 O Senhor dos Exércitos, o Deus de Israel, diz: Coloquei um jugo de ferro sobre o pescoço de todas essas nações para serem escravas de Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia. Coloquei tudo debaixo de seu controle, até os animais selvagens’".

15 Então Jeremias disse a Hananias: "Ouça, Hananias! O Senhor não enviou você, mas o povo acredita em suas mentiras. 16 Por isso, assim diz o Senhor: ‘Você morrerá. Sua vida chegará ao fim ainda este ano, pois você se rebelou contra o Senhor’".

17 Naquele mesmo ano, dois meses depois, o profeta Hananias morreu.

1 That same year, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, Hananiah the son of Azzur, the prophet, who was of Gibeon, spoke to me in Yahweh’s house, in the presence of the priests and of all the people, saying, 2 "Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says, ‘I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. 3 Within two full years I will bring again into this place all the vessels of Yahweh’s house that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place and carried to Babylon. 4 I will bring again to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, with all the captives of Judah, who went to Babylon,’ says Yahweh; ‘for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’"

5 Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests, and in the presence of all the people who stood in Yahweh’s house, 6 even the prophet Jeremiah said, "Amen! May Yahweh do so. May Yahweh perform your words which you have prophesied, to bring again the vessels of Yahweh’s house, and all those who are captives, from Babylon to this place. 7 Nevertheless listen now to this word that I speak in your ears, and in the ears of all the people: 8 The prophets who have been before me and before you of old prophesied against many countries, and against great kingdoms, of war, of evil, and of pestilence. 9 As for prophet who prophesies of peace, when the word of the prophet happens, then the prophet will be known, that Yahweh has truly sent him."

10 Then Hananiah the prophet took the bar from off the prophet Jeremiah’s neck, and broke it. 11 Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, "Yahweh says: ‘Even so I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from off the neck of all the nations within two full years.’" Then the prophet Jeremiah went his way.

12 Then Yahweh’s word came to Jeremiah, after Hananiah the prophet had broken the bar from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying, 13 "Go, and tell Hananiah, saying, ‘Yahweh says, "You have broken the bars of wood, but you have made in their place bars of iron." 14 For Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel says, "I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they will serve him. I have also given him the animals of the field."’"

15 Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet, "Listen, Hananiah! Yahweh has not sent you, but you make this people trust in a lie. 16 Therefore Yahweh says, ‘Behold, I will send you away from off the surface of the earth. This year you will die, because you have spoken rebellion against Yahweh.’"

17 So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.
