1 O Senhor deu esta mensagem ao profeta Jeremias acerca dos filisteus de Gaza, antes de ela ser derrotada pelo exército egípcio. 2 Assim diz o Senhor:

"Do norte se aproxima uma enchente

para inundar a terra.

Destruirá a terra e tudo que nela há,

tanto as cidades como seus habitantes.

O povo gritará de terror,

e todos na terra se lamentarão.

3 Ouçam o ruído dos cascos de cavalos,

o barulho dos carros de guerra e o estrondo de suas rodas.

Os pais fogem apavorados,

sem olhar para trás, para seus filhos indefesos.

4 "Chegou o dia de destruir os filisteus

e seus aliados de Tiro e de Sidom.

Sim, o Senhor destruirá os filisteus,

o remanescente da ilha de Creta.

5 Gaza será humilhada, e sua cabeça será raspada;

Ascalom ficará em silêncio.

E você, remanescente da planície costeira,

até quando cortará a si mesmo em sinal de lamento?

6 "Ó espada do Senhor,

quando descansará?

Volte para sua bainha;

repouse e aquiete-se.

7 "Mas como pode se aquietar

2 Yahweh says:

"Behold, waters rise up out of the north,

and will become an overflowing stream,

the city and those who dwell therein.

The men will cry,

and all the inhabitants of the land will wail.

3 At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong ones,

at the rushing of his chariots,

at the rumbling of his wheels,

because their hands are so feeble,

4 because of the day that comes to destroy all the Philistines,

to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every helper who remains;

for Yahweh will destroy the Philistines,

5 Baldness has come on Gaza;

Ashkelon is brought to nothing.

how long will you cut yourself?

6 "‘You sword of Yahweh, how long will it be before you are quiet?

Put yourself back into your scabbard;

rest, and be still.’

7 "How can you be quiet,

since Yahweh has given you a command?

Against Ashkelon, and against the seashore,
