1 Then the LORD said to me, "Take a large tablet and write upon it in common characters, `Belonging to Ma'her-shal'al-hash-baz.'"2 And I got reliable witnesses, Uri'ah the priest and Zechari'ah the son of Jeberechi'ah, to attest for me.3 And I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the LORD said to me, "Call his name Ma'her-shal'al-hash-baz;4 for before the child knows how to cry `My father' or `My mother,' the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Sama'ria will be carried away before the king of Assyria."5 The LORD spoke to me again:6 "Because this people have refused the waters of Shilo'ah that flow gently, and melt in fear before Rezin and the son of Remali'ah;7 therefore, behold, the Lord is bringing up against them the waters of the River, mighty and many, the king of Assyria and all his glory; and it will rise over all its channels and go over all its banks;8 and it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass on, reaching even to the neck; and its outspread wings will fill the breadth of your land, O Imman'u-el."9 Be broken, you peoples, and be dismayed; give ear, all you far countries; gird yourselves and be dismayed; gird yourselves and be dismayed.10 Take counsel together, but it will come to nought; speak a word, but it will not stand, for God is with us.11 For the LORD spoke thus to me with his strong hand upon me, and warned me not to walk in the way of this people, saying:12 "Do not call conspiracy all that this people call conspiracy, and do not fear what they fear, nor be in dread.13 But the LORD of hosts, him you shall regard as holy; let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.14 And he will become a sanctuary, and a stone of offense, and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.15 And many shall stumble thereon; they shall fall and be broken; they shall be snared and taken."16 Bind up the testimony, seal the teaching among my disciples.17 I will wait for the LORD, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him.18 Behold, I and the children whom the LORD has given me are signs and portents in Israel from the LORD of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion.19 And when they say to you, "Consult the mediums and the wizards who chirp and mutter," should not a people consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?20 To the teaching and to the testimony! Surely for this word which they speak there is no dawn.21 They will pass through the land, greatly distressed and hungry; and when they are hungry, they will be enraged and will curse their king and their God, and turn their faces upward;22 and they will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and they will be thrust into thick darkness.

1 O Senhor Deus me disse:

— Pegue uma tabuleta grande e escreva nela, em letras bem grandes, o seguinte: "Maer-Salal-Hás-Baz" . 2 E procure dois homens de confiança, isto é, o sacerdote Urias e Zacarias, filho de Jeberequias, para servirem de testemunhas.

3 Algum tempo depois, a minha mulher, a profetisa, ficou grávida e deu à luz um filho. Aí o Senhor me disse:

— Ponha nele o nome de Maer-Salal-Hás-Baz. 4 Pois, antes que ele aprenda a dizer "papai" ou "mamãe", o rei da Assíria levará embora todas as riquezas de Damasco e de Samaria.

5 O Senhor falou comigo de novo. Ele disse:

6 — Esse povo não quis as águas calmas do riacho de Siloé e está tremendo de medo do rei Rezim e do rei Peca. 7 Por isso, eu, o Senhor, vou trazer o rei da Assíria e o seu poderoso exército para atacarem esse povo. Eles avançarão como uma enchente do rio Eufrates que sobe acima das margens de todos os canais e de todos os rios que desembocam nele. 8 Eles invadirão a terra de Judá como as águas de uma enchente que cobrem tudo e sobem até o pescoço da gente.

Mas Deus está com o seu povo. As suas asas abertas protegem a Terra Prometida.

9 Reúnam-se, povos, mas fiquem com medo!

Escutem, todos os países distantes!

Preparem-se para a guerra, mas vocês serão derrotados!

Sim, preparem-se para a guerra, mas vocês serão derrotados!

10 Façam planos, mas eles não darão certo.

Resolvam o que quiserem, mas tudo fracassará,

pois Deus está conosco.

11 O Senhor Deus pôs a sua poderosa mão sobre mim e avisou a mim e aos meus seguidores que não andássemos no caminho que o povo estava seguindo. Ele nos disse:

12 — Não pensem que tudo o que o povo chama de revolução seja revolução mesmo. Não fiquem assustados, nem tenham medo daquilo de que o povo tem medo. 13 Pelo contrário, fiquem assustados por minha causa e tenham medo de mim, pois eu, o Senhor Todo-Poderoso, sou santo. 14 Eu serei um templo para abrigar vocês; serei também uma pedra e uma rocha que fará com que os povos de Judá e de Israel tropecem e caiam; serei uma armadilha e um laço para pegar os moradores de Jerusalém. 15 Muitos tropeçarão, cairão e se despedaçarão; ficarão presos nessa armadilha.

16 Eu disse aos meus seguidores:

— Guardem a mensagem e lembrem dos ensinamentos que o Senhor me deu. 17 Ele se escondeu do seu povo, mas eu confio nele e nele ponho a minha esperança.

18 — Aqui estou eu com os filhos que o Senhor Deus me deu. O Senhor Todo-Poderoso, que mora no monte Sião, nos enviou para sermos sinais que causem espanto ao povo de Israel.

19 — Algumas pessoas vão pedir que vocês consultem os adivinhos e os médiuns, que cochicham e falam baixinho. Essas pessoas dirão: "Precisamos receber mensagens dos espíritos, precisamos consultar os mortos em favor dos vivos!" 20 Mas vocês respondam assim: "O que devemos fazer é consultar a lei e os ensinamentos de Deus. O que os médiuns dizem não tem nenhum valor."

21 O povo andará de um lugar para outro, sem rumo, desanimado e com fome. Por causa da fome, ficarão com raiva e amaldiçoarão o seu rei e o seu Deus. Olharão para o céu 22 e depois para a terra e verão somente sofrimento e escuridão, trevas e angústia; porém não poderão escapar delas.
