Så säger Herren Sebaot: Jag ska straffa Amalek*15:2AmalekIsraeliternas arvfiende "från släkte till släkte" (se 2 Mos 17:16, 5 Mos 25:17f). för det han gjorde mot Israel, när han ställde sig i vägen för honom då han drog upp ur Egypten. 3 *Jos 6:17f, 1 Sam 22:19. Dra ut och slå amalekiterna och vig*15:3vigHebr. charám innebar att överlåta något åt Herren och avskilja det från människornas värld, ofta genom förintelse. allt de har åt förintelse. Skona dem inte utan döda både män och kvinnor, barn och spädbarn, kor och får, kameler och åsnor."

4 Saul kallade samman folket och inmönstrade dem i Telaim*15:4TelaimLåg i närheten av Sif (Jos 15:24), söder om Hebron nära israeliternas södra gräns.: 200 000 man fotfolk och dessutom 10 000 man från Juda. 5 När Saul kom till Amaleks stad ordnade han ett bakhåll i dalen. 6 *4 Mos 10:29, 24:21, Dom 1:16, 4:11. Han sade till keniterna*15:6keniternaSydlig nomadstam besläktad med Moses svärfar (Dom 1:16, 4:11).: "Skilj er från amalekiterna och dra bort så att jag inte utrotar er tillsammans med dem. Ni visade ju barmhärtighet mot alla Israels barn när de drog ut ur Egypten." Då skilde sig keniterna från amalekiterna.

7 *1 Mos 25:18. Sedan slog Saul amalekiterna från Havila ända fram emot Shur, som ligger öster om Egypten. 8 *4 Mos 24:7. Han tillfångatog Amaleks kung Agag levande och vigde allt folket åt förintelse med svärd. 9 Men Saul och folket skonade Agag och det bästa och det näst bästa av fåren, korna och lammen, kort sagt, allt som var av värde. Det ville de inte viga åt förintelse. All boskap däremot som var dålig och värdelös vigde de åt förintelse.

10 Då kom Herrens ord till Samuel: 11 *1 Mos 6:6f. "Jag ångrar att jag gjort Saul till kung, för han har vänt sig från mig och inte utfört mina befallningar." Det bedrövade Samuel och han ropade till Herren hela den natten.

12 Tidigt på morgonen steg Samuel upp och gick för att möta Saul. Man berättade för Samuel att Saul hade kommit till Karmel*15:12KarmelBy drygt en mil söder om Hebron (jfr 25:2), inte berget Karmel i nordvästra Israel. och där rest en minnesstod åt sig, och sedan svängt av och fortsatt ner till Gilgal. 13 När Samuel kom till Saul, sade Saul: "Herren välsigne dig! Jag har nu utfört Herrens befallning." 14 Men Samuel sade: "Vad är det då för bräkande av får som ljuder i mina öron, och vad är det för råmande av kor som jag hör?" 15 Saul svarade: "De tog med dem från amalekiterna. Folket skonade det bästa av fåren och korna för att offra åt Herren din Gud. Men det andra har vi vigt åt förintelse."

16 Då sade Samuel till Saul: "Sluta! Jag ska tala om för dig vad Herren sade till mig i natt." Saul sade till honom: "Tala." 17 *1 Sam 9:21, 10:1. Samuel sade: "Var det inte när du var liten i dina egna ögon som du blev ett huvud för Israels stammar och Herren smorde dig till kung över Israel? 18 Herren sände i väg dig och sade: Gå och vig dessa syndare, amalekiterna, åt förintelse och strid mot dem tills du gjort slut på dem. 19 Varför har du då inte lyssnat till Herrens röst utan kastat dig över bytet och gjort det som är ont i Herrens ögon?" 20 Saul svarade Samuel: "Jag har ju lyssnat till Herrens röst och gått den väg som Herren har sänt mig på. Jag har fört hit Agag, Amaleks kung, och vigt amalekiterna åt förintelse. 21 Men folket tog av bytet får och kor, det bästa av det som skulle vigas åt förintelse, för att offra det åt Herren din Gud i Gilgal."

22 *Pred 4:17, Hos 6:6, Matt 9:13, 12:7. Då sade Samuel: "Behagar det Herren med brännoffer och slaktoffer lika mycket som att man lyssnar till Herrens röst? Se, lydnad är bättre än offer och lyhördhet bättre än baggars fett, 23 *Hos 4:6. för upproriskhet är trolldomssynd och trots är synd och avguderi. Eftersom du har förkastat Herrens ord har han förkastat dig som kung." 24 Saul sade till Samuel: "Jag har syndat genom att inte lyda Herrens befallning och dina ord. Jag var rädd för folket och lyssnade till dem. 25 Men förlåt mig nu min synd och vänd tillbaka med mig, så att jag får tillbe Herren." 26 *1 Sam 16:1. Samuel sade till Saul: "Jag vill inte vända tillbaka med dig, för du har förkastat Herrens ord och Herren har förkastat dig: du är inte längre kung över Israel."

27 När Samuel vände sig om för att gå, grep han tag i hörnet på hans mantel,*15:27grep han tag i hörnet på hans mantelTroligen kung Saul som grep profeten Samuels mantel, vilket innebar en vädjan (jfr Sak 8:23). och den revs sönder. 28 *1 Sam 28:17. Samuel sade till honom: "Herren har i dag ryckt Israels kungarike från dig och gett det till en annan som är bättre än du. 29 *4 Mos 23:19, Ps 33:4. Och den Härlige i Israel ljuger inte och ångrar sig inte, för han är inte en människa som ångrar sig." 30 Saul svarade: "Jag har syndat. Visa mig nu ändå den äran inför de äldste i mitt folk och inför Israel att du går tillbaka tillsammans med mig, så att jag får tillbe Herren din Gud." 31 Då gick Samuel tillbaka med Saul, och Saul tillbad Herren.

32 Samuel sade: "För hit Agag till mig, Amaleks kung." Då gick Agag med glad min*15:32med glad minAnnan översättning: "i bojor", "darrande" (så Septuaginta). fram till honom och sade: "Dödens bitterhet är visst förbi!". 33 Men Samuel sade: "Så som ditt svärd har gjort kvinnor barnlösa, så ska din mor bli barnlös bland kvinnor." Sedan högg Samuel Agag i stycken inför Herren i Gilgal. 34 Sedan begav sig Samuel till Rama och Saul drog upp till sitt hem i Sauls Gibea. 35 Samuel ville inte se Saul mer så länge han levde, för Samuel sörjde över Saul. Och Herren ångrade att han hade gjort Saul till kung över Israel.

6 And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. 7 And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt. 8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. 9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.*15.9 fatlings: or, second sort

10 Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying, 11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night. 12 And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal. 13 And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD. 14 And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear? 15 And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed. 16 Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on. 17 And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel? 18 And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.*15.18 they…: Heb. they consume them 19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD? 20 And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. 21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal. 22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. 24 And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD. 26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel. 27 And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent. 28 And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou. 29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.*15.29 Strength: or, Eternity, or, Victory 30 Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God. 31 So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD.

32 Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past. 33 And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.

34 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul. 35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
