Paulo em Éfeso

1 Enquanto *At 18.24;1Co 1.12;3.5-6,22;4.6;16.12;Tt 3.13Apolo estava em *At 18.1Corinto, Paulo, tendo atravessado as *cp.At 18.23regiões mais altas, foi a *At 18.19,21,24;At 19.17,26,28,34-35;20.16-17;21.29;1Co 15.32;16.8;Ef 1.1;1Tm 1.3;2Tm 1.18;4.12;Ap 1.11;2.1Éfeso e, achando ali alguns discípulos, 2 perguntou-lhes: *cp.At 8.15s.;11.16s.Recebestes o Espírito Santo, quando crestes? Responderam-lhe eles: Não. *cp.Jo 7.39Nem sequer ouvimos falar que o Espírito Santo é dado*ou, que há Espírito Santo.. 3 Que batismo, pois, recebestes? — perguntou ele. Responderam-lhe eles: *cp.Lc 7.29;At 18.25O batismo de João. 4 Paulo, porém, disse: *At 13.24João batizou com o batismo de arrependimento, dizendo ao povo *cp.Jo 1.7que cresse naquele que havia de vir depois dele, isto é, em Jesus. 5 Eles, tendo ouvido isso, foram *At 8.12,16;10.48batizados em o nome do Senhor Jesus. 6 Havendo-lhes Paulo *At 6.6; esp.8.17imposto as mãos, veio sobre eles o Espírito Santo, e *At 2.4;10.46; cp.Mc 16.17falavam em diversas línguas e *cp.At 13.1profetizavam. 7 Eram todos cerca de doze homens.

Paulo na escola de Tirano

8 Paulo, entrando na *At 9.20; cp.18.26sinagoga, falou ousadamente por espaço de três meses, discutindo com os ouvintes e persuadindo-os *At 1.3acerca do reino de Deus. 9 Mas, como *At 14.4alguns ficassem endurecidos e incrédulos, falando mal do *At 9.2;At 19.23Caminho diante da multidão, apartou-se deles e separou os *At 11.26;At 19.30discípulos, discutindo diariamente na escola de Tirano. 10 Isso continuou por *cp.At 19.8;At 20.31dois anos, de modo que todos os que habitavam na *At 16.6;At 19.22,26-27Ásia, tanto judeus como gregos, ouviram *cp.At 13.12;At 19.20a palavra do Senhor. 11 Deus fazia *cp.At 8.13milagres extraordinários por meio de Paulo, 12 *cp.At 5.15de sorte que eram do seu corpo levados lenços e aventais aos enfermos, e as enfermidades os deixavam, e deles *cp.Mc 16.17saíam os espíritos malignos. 13 Também alguns judeus *cp.Mt 12.27;Lc 11.19exorcistas, ambulantes, tentaram invocar o nome do Senhor Jesus sobre os que estavam possessos de espíritos malignos, dizendo: Esconjuro-vos por Jesus, a quem Paulo prega. 14 Os que faziam isso eram sete filhos de um judeu chamado Ceva, um dos principais sacerdotes. 15 Mas o espírito maligno respondeu-lhes: Conheço a Jesus e sei quem é Paulo; mas vós, quem sois? 16 O homem no qual estava o espírito maligno, saltando sobre eles, apoderou-se de dois e prevaleceu contra eles, de tal modo que, nus e feridos, fugiram daquela casa. 17 Isso tornou-se conhecido de todos os judeus e gregos que moravam *At 18.19em Éfeso, e veio o temor sobre todos, e o nome do Senhor Jesus era engrandecido; 18 e muitos dos que haviam crido vinham, confessando e declarando os seus atos. 19 Muitos também que tinham exercido artes mágicas ajuntaram os seus livros e queimaram-nos na presença de todos; e, calculando o seu valor, acharam que montava a cinquenta mil *Lc 15.8dracmas*Uma dracma valia 315 réis, moeda brasileira. de prata. 20 Assim, *At 6.7;12.24crescia e prevalecia em poder *At 19.10a palavra do Senhor.

21 Concluídas essas coisas, resolveu Paulo, em seu espírito, *At 20.16,22;21.15;Rm 15.25;2Co 1.16ir a Jerusalém, *1Co 16.5; cp.At 20.1depois de haver atravessado *Rm 15.26;1Ts 1.7s.a *At 16.9;At 19.22,29Macedônia e a *At 18.12Acaia, dizendo: Depois de ter eu estado ali, *Rm 15.24,28; cp.At 23.11é-me necessário que veja também Roma. 22 Enviando à Macedônia dois *At 19.29; cp.At 13.5;20.34;2Co 8.19dos que lhe ministravam, *At 16.1Timóteo e *Rm 16.23(?);2Tm 4.20(?)Erasto, ele mesmo ficou algum tempo na *At 19.10Ásia.

Demétrio excita um grande tumulto

23 Por esse tempo, houve grande alvoroço acerca do *At 19.9Caminho. 24 Pois um homem chamado Demétrio, ourives, que fazia de prata santuários de Diana, *cp.At 16.16,19s.dava muito lucro aos artífices; 25 e ele, reunindo-os com os oficiais de obras semelhantes, disse: Senhores, sabeis que deste ofício vem a nossa riqueza, 26 e estais vendo e ouvindo que não só em *At 18.19Éfeso, mas em quase toda a *At 19.10Ásia, este Paulo tem persuadido e desencaminhado muita gente, dizendo *At 17.29;1Co 8.4;10.19; cp.Dt 4.28;Sl 115.4;Is 44.10-20;Jr 10.3ss.;Ap 9.20não serem deuses os que são feitos por mãos de homens. 27 Não somente há perigo de que esta nossa profissão caia em descrédito, como também que o templo da grande deusa Diana seja desconsiderado, e que venha mesmo a ser privada da sua grandeza aquela a quem toda a Ásia e o *Mt 24.14mundo adora. 28 Ouvindo isso, se encheram de ira e clamavam: Grande é a Diana dos efésios! 29 A cidade encheu-se de confusão, e todos correram ao teatro, arrebatando os *At 16.9;At 19.21-22macedônios *nãoAt 20.4Gaio e *At 20.4;27.2;Cl 4.10;Fm 24Aristarco, *At 19.22; cp.At 13.5;20.34;2Co 8.19companheiros de Paulo em viagem. 30 Querendo Paulo apresentar-se ao povo, *At 19.9os discípulos não lho permitiram; 31 também alguns principais da Ásia, que eram seus amigos, mandaram rogar-lhe que não se aventurasse a ir ao teatro. 32 *At 21.34Uns, pois, gritavam de um modo, outros, de outro; porque a assembleia estava em confusão, e a maior parte não sabia por que causa se havia ali reunido. 33 Eles tiraram Alexandre do meio da turba, e os judeus impeliram-no na frente. Alexandre, *At 12.17acenando com a mão, queria apresentar uma defesa ao povo. 34 Mas, quando perceberam que ele era judeu, todos a uma voz gritaram por espaço de quase duas horas: Grande é a Diana dos efésios! 35 O secretário, tendo apaziguado a multidão, disse: Efésios, que homem há que não saiba que a cidade de Éfeso é zeladora do templo da grande Diana e da imagem que caiu de Júpiter. 36 Assim, não podendo ser isso contestado, convém que fiqueis quietos e nada façais precipitadamente. 37 Pois estes homens que trouxestes aqui não são *Rm 2.22sacrílegos nem blasfemadores da nossa deusa. 38 Se, pois, Demétrio e os artífices que estão com ele têm alguma queixa contra alguém, os tribunais estão abertos, e há *At 13.7procônsules; acusem-se uns aos outros. 39 Mas, se alguma outra coisa requereis, será resolvida em assembleia regular. 40 Pois nos arriscamos a ser acusados pela sedição de hoje, não havendo motivo algum que nos permita justificar este ajuntamento. 41 Dito isso, despediu a assembleia.

1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, 2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. 3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. 7 And all the men were about twelve. 8 And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God. 9 But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus. 10 And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks. 11 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: 12 So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

13 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. 14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so. 15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? 16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. 18 And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. 19 Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

21 After these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rome. 22 So he sent into Macedonia two of them that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season. 23 And the same time there arose no small stir about that way. 24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen; 25 Whom he called together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth. 26 Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands: 27 So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth. 28 And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. 29 And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre. 30 And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not. 31 And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre. 32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together. 33 And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people. 34 But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. 35 And when the townclerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter? 36 Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly. 37 For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess. 38 Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another. 39 But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly. 40 For we are in danger to be called in question for this day’s uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse. 41 And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
