1 Την τέταρτη μέρα του ένατου μήνα –του Κισλεύ– το τέταρτο έτος της βασιλείας του Δαρείου,*Την τέταρτη... Δαρείου. Δηλ. το Νοέμβριο 518 π.Χ. δόθηκε μήνυμα από τον Κύριο στο Ζαχαρία. 2 Την ίδια μέρα είχε φτάσει στο ναό του Κυρίου του σύμπαντος από τη Βαιθήλ, ο Σερεσέρ και ο Ρεγέμ-Μέλεχ επικεφαλής αντιπροσωπείας. Ήρθαν για να ζητήσουν την εύνοια του Κυρίου*Η αντιπροσωπεία ήρθε στην Ιερουσαλήμ να συμβουλευθεί τους ιερείς (Λευ 10:10-11) για τη νηστεία που τηρείτο κάθε χρόνο τον πέμπτο μήνα, δηλ. κατά τη θλιβερή επέτειο της καταστροφής του ναού και της Ιερουσαλήμ (587 π.Χ. Β΄ Βασ 25:8-9). Αλλά οι εργασίες ανοικοδόμησης του ναού είχαν ήδη αρχίσει (Αγγ 2:18· Ζαχ 4:7, 9) και το ερώτημα ήταν αν είναι απαραίτητο τώρα να διατηρηθεί αυτή η επέτειος. με θυσίες 3 και να ρωτήσουν τους ιερείς του ναού και τους προφήτες, αν πρέπει να εξακολουθήσουν να τηρούν την ημέρα του πένθους και της νηστείας τον πέμπτο μήνα, όπως έκαναν επί σειρά ετών.

4 Τότε ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος με πρόσταξε: 5 «Πες σ’ όλο το λαό της χώρας και στους ιερείς: "μήπως για μένα εβδομήντα χρόνια τώρα τηρούσατε τις ημέρες της νηστείας και του πένθους, τον πέμπτο και τον έβδομο μήνα;*τον έβδομο μήνα. Τον μήνα αυτό του 587 π.Χ. έγινε η δολοφονία του Γεδαλία (Β΄ Βασ 25:25).6 Κι όταν τρώτε και πίνετε, δεν το κάνετε για τον εαυτό σας; 7 Δε γνωρίζετε τι εγώ ο Κύριος διακήρυξα με τους αρχαίους προφήτες, την εποχή που ακόμα η Ιερουσαλήμ είχε ειρήνη και ασφάλεια μαζί με τις γύρω πόλεις της, και κατοικείτο η νότια περιοχή με τα λοφώδη μέρη δυτικά;"» 8,9 Τότε ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος με πρόσταξε να τους υπενθυμίσω τι είχε πει στους προγόνους τους: «Να κρίνετε με δικαιοσύνη και να δείχνετε αγάπη κι ευσπλαχνία ο ένας για τον άλλο. 10 Να μην καταπιέζετε τις χήρες, τα ορφανά, τους ξένους και τους φτωχούς, και να μη σκέφτεστε κακό ο ένας εναντίον του άλλου». 11 «Αυτοί όμως είχαν αρνηθεί να υπακούσουν», μου είπε ο Κύριος, «και συμπεριφέρθηκαν πεισματικά· έκλεισαν τ’ αυτιά τους για να μην ακούν 12 και έκαναν την καρδιά τους σκληρή σαν το διαμάντι, για να μη δέχονται τη διδασκαλία και τους λόγους που εγώ, ο Κύριος του σύμπαντος, με το Πνεύμα μου, δηλαδή με τους προηγούμενους προφήτες, είχα δώσει. Γι’ αυτό οργίστηκα πολύ. 13 Και όπως εγώ μιλούσα αλλά εκείνοι δεν άκουγαν, έτσι κι εγώ δεν άκουσα όταν αυτοί με καλούσαν. 14 Τους διασκόρπισα σε έθνη όλα άγνωστα σ’ αυτούς. Ερημώθηκε η χώρα πίσω τους και έγινε ακατοίκητη. Έτσι αυτοί οι ίδιοι μετέβαλαν την όμορφη χώρα τους σε έρημο».
