1 Filho do homem, falou-me, come o rolo que aqui está, e, em seguida, vai falar à casa de Israel.2 Abri a boca, e ele mo fez engolir.3 Filho do homem, falou-me, nutre o teu corpo, enche o teu estômago com o rolo que te dou. Então o comi, e era doce na boca, como o mel.4 Em seguida, acrescentou: Filho do homem, vai até a casa de Israel para lhe transmitir as minhas palavras.5 Não é a um povo de linguagem incompreensível, de linguagem bárbara que te envio, e sim aos israelitas;6 não é a populações inumeráveis, de idioma incompreensível, de linguajar selvagem, cuja língua não compreenderias: eles te ouviriam, se eu te enviasse a eles;7 mas a casa de Israel recusará escutar-te, porque eles não querem atender a mim! Pois, toda a casa de Israel nada mais é do que gente teimosa, de coração insensível.8 Pois bem!, tornarei o teu semblante tão endurecido quanto o deles;9 vou dar a teu rosto a rigidez do diamante, que é mais resistente que a rocha. Não os temas, pois, e não te deixes amedrontrar por causa deles, pois são uma raça de recalcitrantes.10 Filho do homem, ajuntou ele, acolhe em teu coração, escuta com toda a atenção tudo quanto eu te disser.11 Depois dirigir-te-ás a teus compatriotas exilados, para lhes falar. Dir-lhes-ás: oráculo do Senhor Javé - quer te escutem ou não.12 Então o espírito se apoderou de mim e ouvi atrás de mim um vozerio de violento rumor. Bendita seja a glória do Senhor, onde ela repousar!13 Ouvi o rumor do bater das asas dos seres vivos e o ruído de suas rodas ao lado deles, um barulho portentoso.14 O espírito, a seguir, me transportou e me levou. Eu ia, com o coração repleto de amargura e furor, desde que a mão do Senhor havia pesado sobre mim.15 Cheguei a Tel Abib, junto dos deportados que se haviam instalado às margens do Cobar, e ali fiquei sete dias no meio deles, em sombria estupefação.16 Passados esses sete dias, a palavra do Senhor foi-me dirigida nestes termos:17 filho do homem, estabeleço-te como sentinela na casa de Israel. Logo que escutares um oráculo saindo de minha boca, tu lho transmitirás de minha parte.18 Se digo ao malévolo que ele vai morrer, e tu não o prevines e não lhe falas para pô-lo de sobreaviso devido ao seu péssimo proceder, de modo que ele possa viver, ele há de perecer por causa de seu delito, mas é a ti que pedirei conta do seu sangue.19 Contudo, se depois de advertido por ti, não se corrigir da malícia e perversidade, ele perecerá por causa de seu pecado, enquanto tu hás de salvar a tua vida.20 E, quando um justo abandonar a sua justiça para praticar o mal, e eu permitir diante dele algum tropeço, ele perecerá. Se não o advertires, ele morrerá por causa do seu delito, sem que sejam tomadas em conta as boas obras que anteriormente praticou, e é a ti que pedirei conta do seu sangue.21 Ao contrário, se advertires ao justo que se abstenha do pecado, e ele não pecar, então ele viverá, graças à tua advertência, e tu, assim, terás salvo a tua vida.22 A mão do Senhor veio ali sobre mim. Vamos, disse-me ele, vai à planície, onde te vou falar.23 Pus-me então a caminho para a planície; e eis que a glória do Senhor lá estava, tal qual eu a havia contemplado às margens do Cobar. E caí com a face em terra.24 Mas o espírito do Senhor entrou em mim para me pôr em pé, enquanto me falava o Senhor: Vai encerrar-te em tua casa.25 Filho do homem, vão amarrar-te com cordas para que não possas mais ir ao meio deles.26 Prenderei tua língua a teu paladar, de modo que o teu mutismo te impeça de repreendê-los, pois é uma raça de recalcitrantes.27 Quando eu, porém, te falar, abrir-te-ei a boca, e lhes dirás: oráculo do Senhor Javé. Que escute então aquele que quiser escutar, e que não escute aquele que não o quiser, pois é uma raça de recalcitrantes.
1 And he said unto me, Son of man, eat what thou findest: eat this roll, and go, speak unto the house of Israel.2 So I opened my mouth, and he caused me to eat this roll.3 And he said unto me, Son of man, feed thy belly, and fill thy bowels with this roll that I am giving unto thee. And I ate it; and it was in my mouth like honey in sweetness.4 And he said unto me, Son of man, go, get thee unto the house of Israel, and speak with my words unto them.5 For not to a people of an obscure speech and of a difficult tongue art thou sent, but to the house of Israel;6 Not to many people of an obscure speech and of a difficult tongue, whose words thou canst not understand. Surely, had I sent thee to them, they would truly have hearkened unto thee.7 But the house of Israel will not hearken unto thee; for they will not hearken unto me; for all the house of Israel have a bold forehead, and a hard heart.8 Behold, I have made thy face strong against their face, and thy forehead strong against their forehead.9 As an adamant harder than flint have I made thy forehead: thou shalt not fear them, nor shalt thou be dismayed at their presence, though they be a rebellious family.10 And he said unto me, Son of man, all my words that I will speak unto thee receive in thy heart, and hear them with thy ears.11 And go, get thee to those in exile, unto the children of thy people, and speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus hath said the Lord Eternal: whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear.12 Then a spirit took me up, and I heard behind me a voice of a great rushing, saying, Blessed be the glory of the Lord from his place.13 I heard also the sound of the wings of the living creatures that touched one another, and the sound of the wheels at the same time with them, and the sound of a great rushing.14 So a spirit lifted me up, and took me away, and I walked in bitterness, in the heat of my spirit, and the inspiration of the Lord was strong upon me.15 Then came I to the exiles at Telabib, who dwelt by the river Kebar, and I remained where they dwelt, and I remained there in a state of confusion among them seven days.16 And it came to pass at the end of seven days, That the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,17 Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: and thou shalt hear the word out of my mouth, and give them warning from me.18 When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou dost not give him warning, and speakest not to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life: the same wicked man shall die through his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thy hand.19 But thou,if thou hast warned the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way: he shall indeed die in his iniquity; but thou hast surely delivered thy soul.20 Again, When a righteous man do turn from his righteousness, and do what is wrong: then will I lay a stumblingblock before him, so that he shall die; yet if thou hast not given him warning, he shall die in his sin, and his acts of righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require from thy hand.21 But if thou hast truly warned him,the righteous, that the righteous should not sin, and he doth not sin: he shall surely live, because he attended to the warning, and thou hast surely delivered thy own soul.22 And the inspiration of the Lord came there over me; and he said unto me, Arise, go forth into the valley, and there will I speak with thee.23 And I arose, and went forth into the valley; and, behold, there was the glory of the Lord standing, like that glory which I had seen by the river Kebar: and I fell down on my face.24 Then entered a spirit into me, and placed me upright on my feet, and spoke with me, and said unto me, Go, shut thyself up within thy house.25 But thou, O son of man, behold, they put ropes upon thee, and bind thee with them, that thou canst not go out among them:26 And I will let thy tongue cleave to the roof of thy mouth, that thou shalt be dumb, and shalt not become to them a man who reproveth; for they are a rebellious family.27 But when I speak with thee, I will open thy mouth, and thou shalt say unto them, Thus hath said the Lord Eternal, He that heareth, let him hear; and he that forbeareth, let him forebear; for they are a rebellious family.
