1 A palavra do Senhor foi-me dirigida nestes termos:2 filho do homem, dirige-te a teus compatriotas e dize-lhes: quando eu erguer a espada contra uma terra, e seus habitantes escolherem um dentre eles para ser sentinela,3 suposto que esse homem, vendo vir a espada, faça soar a trombeta para dar alarme à população,4 todo aquele que escutar o seu som sem lhe dar atenção, e então venha a espada fazer com que ele pereça, esse homem é responsável por aquilo que lhe suceder:5 ouviu o soar da trombeta e todavia não tomou precaução - é ele responsável pelo que lhe advier. Mas aquele que levou em consideração o alarme, esse terá salva a sua vida.6 Suposto, ao contrário, que a sentinela veja vir a espada, não faça soar a trombeta, de sorte que o alarme não seja dado às gentes e que a espada venha a tirar a vida de alguém, este, é certo, perecerá devido à sua iniqüidade, mas eu pedirei conta do seu sangue à sentinela.7 Filho do homem, eu te constituí sentinela na casa de Israel. Logo que escutares um oráculo meu, tu lhe transmitirás esse oráculo de minha parte.8 Se eu disser ao pecador que ele deve morrer, e tu não o avisares para pô-lo de guarda contra seu proceder nefasto, ele perecerá por causa de seu pecado, mas a ti pedirei conta do seu sangue.9 Todavia, se depois de receber tua advertência para mudar de proceder, nada fizer, ele perecerá devido a seu pecado, enquanto tu salvarás a tua vida.10 Filho do homem, dize aos israelitas: não cessais de repetir: são os nossos delitos e os nossos pecados que pesam sobre nós; eis por que perecemos. Como poderemos nós subsistir?11 Dize-lhes isto: Por minha vida - oráculo do Senhor Javé -, não me comprazo com a morte do pecador, mas antes com a sua conversão, de modo que tenha a vida. Convertei-vos! Afastai-vos do mau caminho que seguis; por que haveis de perecer, ó casa de Israel?12 Filho do homem, dize a teus compatriotas: no dia em que o justo vier a pecar, a sua justiça não o salvará; do mesmo modo, a malícia do pecador não há de fazê-lo sucumbir, se ele, um dia, renunciar à sua perversidade. Não, o justo, desde que haja cometido delito, não poderá viver em virtude de sua justiça.13 Ainda mesmo que eu lhe tenha declarado que ele viveria, se ele praticar o mal confiando em sua justiça, nem uma de suas boas ações será computada: ele morrerá por causa de suas faltas.14 E ainda mesmo que houvesse eu afirmado ao pecador que ele haveria de morrer, se, renunciando ao mal, ele praticar a justiça e a honestidade,15 se ele devolver o penhor que exigiu, se restituir o que roubou, se observar as leis que dão vida e se se abstiver de todo o mal, ele viverá e será preservado da morte.16 Nenhum delito que tenha ele cometido será computado. Ele viverá porque terá observado a justiça e a honestidade.17 Teus compatriotas dizem que o proceder do Senhor não é justo. É o deles que não o é.18 Se um justo abandonar sua retidão para cometer o mal, ele morrerá.19 Se o mau renunciar à sua malícia para praticar o bem e ser honesto, ele viverá por essa razão.20 E vós ousais dizer que o modo de proceder do Senhor é injusto! Será segundo os atos de cada um que vos julgarei, ó israelitas!21 No décimo segundo ano, no quinto dia do décimo mês de nosso cativeiro, um fugitivo de Jerusalém veio a mim, dizendo: a cidade está tomada!22 Ora, a mão do Senhor se achava posta sobre mim na noite precedente à chegada desse fugitivo, e, pela manhã, no momento em que ele chegava, o Senhor me abriu a boca. Tendo-me sido aberta a boca, meu mutismo cessou.23 A palavra do Senhor foi-me dirigida nestes termos:24 filho do homem, os habitantes das ruínas de que se acha coberto o solo de Israel dizem: Abraão estava sozinho, quando ele se apossou desta terra; a nós, que somos numerosos, ele a deixou em partilha.25 Responde-lhes, pois: eis o que diz o Senhor Javé: comeis a carne com sangue, ergueis os olhos para os ídolos, derramais o sangue: e tereis a posse da terra?26 Vós vos fiais em vossa espada, cometeis abominações, manchais cada um de vós a mulher do próximo: e haveis de ter a posse da terra?27 Eis, dir-lhes-ás, o que diz o Senhor Javé: Por minha vida, aqueles que habitam as ruínas tombarão sob o gládio; aquele que vive no campo, eu o lançarei como pasto às feras, e aqueles que estão nos fortes e nas cavernas morrerão de peste.28 Assim farei da terra uma desolação e uma solidão, o que porá termo ao orgulho que ela concebia de sua força. As montanhas de Israel ficarão desoladas de tal modo que ninguém mais passará por elas.29 Então se saberá que sou eu o Senhor, quando eu houver feito da terra uma triste solidão, por causa de todas as abominações que cometeram.30 Quanto a ti, filho do homem, teus compatriotas falam de ti ao longo dos muros e nas portas das casas: vinde, dizei um ao outro entre vizinhos: vinde escutar o derradeiro oráculo do Senhor.31 Depois, eles acorrem em multidão até ti, sentam-se diante de ti, ouvem o que dizes, mas não o põem em prática. Eles só fazem o que lhes agrada e só procuram o próprio proveito.32 Tu és para eles como um cantor romântico, dotado de bela voz, que toca bem o seu instrumento; escutam o que dizes, porém não o põem em prática.33 Entretanto, quando tudo isso se realizar - e eis que está em vésperas de acontecer -, saberão que houve um profeta no meio deles.
1 And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,2 Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, If there be a land over which I bring the sword, and the people of the land take a man from among themselves, and appoint him unto themselves for a watchman;3 And if he see the sword coming over the land, and blow the cornet, and warn the people;4 And whosoever heareth the sound of the cornet, and taketh no warning; and the sword cometh, and taketh him away: his blood shall be upon his own head.5 The sound of the cornet hath he heard, and he hath taken no warning; his blood shall be upon him. But had he taken warning he would have delivered his soul.6 But if the watchman see the sword coming, and blow not the cornet, so that the people be not warned, and the sword cometh, and taketh away from among them some person: this one is taken away for his iniquity; but his blood will I require from the watchmans hand.7 But as for thee, O son of man, I have appointed thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: so that when thou hearest a word from my mouth, thou shalt warn them from me.8 When I say unto the wicked, O wicked one, thou shalt surely die; and thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way: that wicked one shall die for his iniquity; but his blood will I require from thy hand.9 Nevertheless, if thou hast indeed warned the wicked of his way to turn away from it, and he do not turn from his way: he shall certainly die for his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.10 But thou, O son of man, speak unto the house of Israel, Thus do ye speak, saying, Truly our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and through them do we pine away: how then shall we live?11 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord Eternal, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but in the return of the wicked from his way that he may live: return ye, return ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?12 But thou, son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him on the day of his transgression; and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not stumble through it on the day that he returneth from his wickedness; nor shall the righteous be able to live through the other on the day that he sinneth.13 When I say of the righteous, that he shall surely live, and he trusteth to his own righteousness, and committeth what is wrong: all his righteous deeds shall not be remembered, and for his wrong that he hath committed,through this shall he die.14 Again, when I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and he turneth from his sin, and executeth justice and righteousness;15 If the wicked restore the pledge, make restitution for what he hath robbed, walk in the statutes of life, so as not to do any wrong: he shall surely live, he shall not die.16 All his sins that he hath committed shall not be remembered unto him: justice and righteousness hath he executed, he shall surely live.17 Yet say the children of thy people, The way of the Lord is not equitable: while, as to them, their way is not equitable.18 When the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and doth what is wrong, he shall even die therefore.19 And when the wicked returneth from his wickedness, and executeth justice and righteousness, he shall surely live therefore.20 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equitable. Every one after his own ways will I judge you, O house of Israel.21 And it came to pass in the twelfth year, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month after our exile, that there came unto me one that had escaped out of Jerusalem, saying, The city hath been smitten.22 Now the inspiration of the Lord was come upon me in the evening, before the coming of the one who had escaped; and he had opened my mouth, before he was come to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened and I was not kept dumb any more.23 And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,24 Son of man, they that dwell in these ruins in the land of Israel say as followeth, But one man was Abraham, and he obtained the land as an inheritance; and as we are many, the land must surely be given to us for an inheritance.25 Therefore say unto them, Thus hath said the Lord Eternal, By the blood do ye eat, and your eyes do you lift up toward your idols, and blood do ye shed: and ye expect to possess the land?26 Ye depend upon your sword, ye commit abomination, and ye defile every one his neighbors wife: and ye expect to possess the land?27 Thus shalt thou say unto them, Thus hath said the Lord Eternal, As I live, surely those that are in the ruined places shall fall by the sword, and him that is in the open field will I give to the beasts that they may devour him, and those that are in the strongholds and in the caves shall die through the pestilence.28 And I will render the land desolate and wasted, and the pride of her strength shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, with none to pass through them.29 And they shall experience that I am the Lord, when I render the land desolate and wasted, because of all their abominations which they have committed.30 And thou, son of man, there are the children of thy people, who are talking about thee by the walls and in the entrances of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Do come, and hear what the word is which cometh forth from the Lord.31 And then they come unto thee as the people come, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but do not execute them; for as merry songs they carry them in their mouth, while their heart goeth after their unlawful gains.32 And, lo, thou art unto them as a merry song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well: and thus they hear thy words, but execute them not.33 But when it cometh to pass, lo, it will come, then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them.
