1 Joash was seven years old when he began to reign; and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Zibiah of Beer-sheba. 2 And Joash did what was right in the sight of Jehovah all the days of Jehoiada the priest. 3 And Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he begot sons and daughters. 4 And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to renew the house of Jehovah. 5 And he gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, Go out to the cities of Judah and collect of all Israel money for the repair of the house of your God*GodHebrew: Elohim from year to year, and ye shall hasten the matter. But the Levites hastened it not. 6 And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said to him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the tribute of Moses the servant of Jehovah laid upon the congregation of Israel, for the tent of the testimony? 7 For the wicked Athaliah and her sons had devastated the house of God*GodHebrew: Elohim and also all the hallowed things of the house of Jehovah had they employed for the Baals. 8 And the king commanded, and they made a chest, and set it at the gate of the house of Jehovah without, 9 and they made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring to Jehovah the tribute of Moses the servant of God*GodHebrew: Elohimlaid upon Israel in the wilderness. 10 And all the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in and cast into the chest, until they had finished. 11 And it came to pass at the time the chest was brought for the king’s control by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and high priest’s officer came, and they emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to its place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance. 12 And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of Jehovah, and they hired masons and carpenters to renew the house of Jehovah, and also such as wrought in iron and bronze, to repair the house of Jehovah. 13 So the workmen wrought, and the work was perfected by them, and they set the house of God*GodHebrew: Elohim in its state, and strengthened it. 14 And when they had finished, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada; and they made of it vessels for the house of Jehovah, utensils to minister, and with which to offer up, and cups, and utensils of gold and silver. And they offered up burnt-offerings in the house of Jehovah continually all the days of Jehoiada.

15 And Jehoiada grew old and was full of days, and he died; he was a hundred and thirty years old when he died. 16 And they buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, both toward God*GodHebrew: Elohim and toward his house. 17 And after the death of Jehoiada the princes of Judah came and made obeisance to the king; then the king hearkened to them. 18 And they forsook the house of Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of their fathers, and served the Asherahs and idols; and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass. 19 And he sent prophets among them to bring them again to Jehovah, and they testified against them; but they would not give ear. 20 And the Spirit of God*GodHebrew: Elohim came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood up above the people and said unto them, Thus saith God*GodHebrew: Elohim Wherefore do ye transgress the commandments of Jehovah? And ye cannot prosper; for ye have forsaken Jehovah, and he hath forsaken you. 21 And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the command of the king in the court of the house of Jehovah. 22 And king Joash remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, Jehovah see and require it! 23 And it came to pass at the end of the year that the army of Syria came up against him; and they entered into Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all the spoil of them to the king at Damascus. 24 Truly with a small company of men came the army of the Syrians, but Jehovah delivered a very great army into their hand, because they had forsaken Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of their fathers; and they executed judgment upon Joash. 25 And when they had departed from him (for they left him in great diseases), his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died; and they buried him in the city of David, but they did not bury him in the sepulchres of the kings. 26 And these are they that conspired against him: Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith a Moabitess. 27 And as to his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid upon him, and the building of the house of God*GodHebrew: Elohim behold, they are written in the treatise of the book of the kings. And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.

Dar leviții nu s-au grăbit. 6 Împăratul*2 Împ. 12:7. a chemat pe marele preot Iehoiada și i-a zis: „Pentru ce n-ai vegheat ca leviții să strângă din Iuda și din Ierusalim darea poruncită de Moise*Exod 30:12-14,16., robul Domnului, și pusă pe adunarea lui Israel pentru cortul*Num. 1:50.Fapte 7:44. mărturiei? 7 Căci nelegiuita aceea de Atalia și fiii*Cap. 21:17. ei au pustiit Casa lui Dumnezeu și au întrebuințat în slujba baalilor toate lucrurile*2 Împ. 12:4. închinate Casei Domnului." 8 Atunci, împăratul a poruncit*2 Împ. 12:9. să se facă o ladă și să se pună afară la poarta Casei Domnului. 9 Și s-a dat de veste în Iuda și în Ierusalim ca să se aducă Domnului*Vers. 6. darea pusă de Moise, robul Domnului, pe Israel în pustie. 10 Toate căpeteniile și tot poporul s-au bucurat de lucrul acesta și au adus și au aruncat în ladă tot ce aveau de plătit. 11 Când*2 Împ. 12:10. vedeau leviții că e mult argint în ladă și că era vremea ca s-o dea în mâinile dregătorilor împăratului, venea logofătul împăratului și slujbașul marelui preot și goleau lada. Apoi o luau și o puneau iarăși la loc. Așa făceau în fiecare zi și au strâns mult argint. 12 Împăratul și Iehoiada îl dădeau meșterilor însărcinați cu facerea lucrării în Casa Domnului, care tocmeau cioplitori de piatră și tâmplari, ca să dreagă Casa Domnului, precum și lucrători în fier și aramă, ca să dreagă Casa Domnului. 13 Lucrătorii s-au apucat de lucru și au isprăvit ce era de dres; au pus Casa lui Dumnezeu iarăși în stare bună și au întărit-o. 14 Când au isprăvit, au adus înaintea împăratului și înaintea lui Iehoiada argintul care mai rămăsese. Și cu el*2 Împ. 12:13. au făcut unelte pentru Casa Domnului, unelte pentru slujbă și pentru arderile-de-tot, pahare și alte scule de aur și de argint. Și, în tot timpul vieții lui Iehoiada, au adus necurmat arderi-de-tot în Casa Domnului. 15 Iehoiada a murit bătrân și sătul de zile. La moarte, avea o sută treizeci de ani. 16 L-au îngropat în cetatea lui David, la un loc cu împărații, pentru că făcuse bine în Israel, și față de Dumnezeu, și față de Casa Lui.

17 După moartea lui Iehoiada, căpeteniile lui Iuda au venit și s-au închinat înaintea împăratului. Atunci, împăratul i-a ascultat. 18 Și au părăsit Casa Domnului Dumnezeului părinților lor și au slujit astarteelor*1 Împ. 14:23. și idolilor. Mânia*Jud. 5:8. Cap. 19:2; 28:13; 29:8; 32:25. Domnului a venit asupra lui Iuda și asupra Ierusalimului, pentru că se făcuseră vinovați în felul acesta. 19 Domnul a trimis*Cap. 36:15.Ier. 7:25,26;25:4. la ei proroci să-i întoarcă înapoi la El, dar n-au ascultat de înștiințările pe care le-au primit. 20 Zaharia, fiul preotului Iehoiada, a fost îmbrăcat cu Duhul*Cap. 15:1;20:14. lui Dumnezeu. El s-a înfățișat înaintea poporului și i-a zis: „Așa vorbește Dumnezeu: ‘Pentru ce*Num. 14:41. călcați poruncile Domnului? Nu veți propăși. Pentru că*Cap. 15:2. ați părăsit pe Domnul, și El vă va părăsi.’" 21 Și au uneltit împotriva lui și l-au ucis*Mat. 23:35.Fapte 7:58,59. cu pietre, din porunca împăratului, în curtea Casei Domnului. 22 Împăratul Ioas nu și-a adus aminte de bunăvoința pe care o avusese față de el Iehoiada, tatăl lui Zaharia, și a omorât pe fiul lui. Zaharia a zis când a murit: „Domnul să vadă și să judece!" 23 După trecerea anului, oastea*2 Împ. 12:17. sirienilor s-a suit împotriva lui Ioas și a venit în Iuda și la Ierusalim. Au omorât din popor pe toate căpeteniile poporului și au trimis împăratului toată prada la Damasc. 24 Oastea sirienilor a venit cu un mic*Lev. 26:8.Deut. 32:30.Is. 30:17. număr de oameni. Totuși Domnul a dat*Lev. 26:25.Deut. 28:25. în mâinile lor o oaste foarte însemnată, pentru că părăsiseră pe Domnul Dumnezeul părinților lor. Astfel au pedepsit*Cap. 22:8.Is. 10:4. sirienii pe Ioas. 25 Când au plecat de la el, după ce-l lăsaseră în mari suferințe, slujitorii*2 Împ. 12:20. lui au uneltit împotriva lui din pricina sângelui fiului*Vers. 21. preotului Iehoiada. L-au omorât în patul lui și a murit. L-au îngropat în cetatea lui David, dar nu l-au îngropat în mormintele împăraților. 26 Iată pe cei ce au uneltit împotriva lui: Zabad, fiul Șimeatei, o femeie amonită, și Iozabad, fiul Șimritei, o femeie moabită. 27 Cât despre fiii lui, despre marele număr de prorocii*2 Împ. 12:18. făcute cu privire la el și despre dregerea Casei lui Dumnezeu, toate acestea sunt scrise în istoria din cartea împăraților.
