1 After these things and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fortified cities, and thought to break into them. 2 And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was minded to fight against Jerusalem, 3 he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the fountains of waters that were outside the city; and they helped him. 4 And there was gathered together much people, and they stopped all the fountains, and the torrent that flows through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water? 5 And he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised it up to the towers, and built another wall outside, and fortified the Millo of the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance. 6 And he set captains of war over the people, and assembled them to him on the open place at the gate of the city, and spoke consolingly to them saying, 7 Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him; for there are more with us than with him: 8 with him is an arm of flesh, but with us is Jehovah our God*GodHebrew: Elohim to help us and to fight our battles. And the people depended upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

9 After this, Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem (but he himself was before Lachish, and all his power with him), unto Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying, 10 Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria: On what do ye rely that ye abide in the siege in Jerusalem? 11 Does not Hezekiah persuade you, to give yourselves over to die by famine and by thirst, saying, Jehovah our God*GodHebrew: Elohim will deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria? 12 Has not the same Hezekiah removed his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and burn incense upon it? 13 Do ye not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the countries? Were the gods of the nations of the countries in any wise able to deliver their country out of my hand? 14 Who is there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers have utterly destroyed, that was able to deliver his people out of my hand, that your God*GodHebrew: Elohim should be able to deliver you out of my hand? 15 And now, let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you in this manner, neither yet believe him; for no god*godHebrew: eloah of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, nor out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God*GodHebrew: Elohim deliver you out of my hand? 16 And his servants spoke yet more against Jehovah, the true God*GodHebrew: Elohim and against his servant Hezekiah. 17 And he wrote a letter to rail at Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel, and to speak against him saying, As the gods of the nations of the countries have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall not the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Hezekiah deliver his people out of my hand. 18 And they cried with a loud voice in the Jewish language to the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to frighten them and to trouble them; that they might take the city. 19 And they spoke of the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Jerusalem as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, the work of man’s hand. 20 And because of this, king Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz prayed and cried to heaven. 21 And Jehovah sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the princes and the captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. And he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels made him fall there with the sword. 22 And Jehovah saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all, and protected them on every side. 23 And many brought gifts unto Jehovah to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah; and he was thenceforth magnified in the sight of all the nations.

24 In those days Hezekiah was sick unto death, and he prayed to Jehovah; and he spoke to him and gave him a sign. 25 But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done to him, for his heart was lifted up; and there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem. 26 And Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of Jehovah came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah. 27 And Hezekiah had very much riches and honour; and he made himself treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of pleasant vessels; 28 storehouses also for the increase of corn and new wine and oil, and stalls for all manner of beasts, and he procured flocks for the stalls. 29 And he provided for himself cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance; for God*GodHebrew: Elohim gave him very much substance. 30 And he, Hezekiah, stopped the upper outlet of the waters of Gihon, and brought it straight down to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works. 31 However in the matter of the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God*GodHebrew: Elohim left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart. 32 And the rest of the acts of Hezekiah and his good deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 33 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the highest place of the sepulchres of the sons of David; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.

Și ei au fost de părerea lui. 4 S-au strâns o mulțime de oameni și au astupat toate izvoarele și pârâul care curge prin mijlocul ținutului aceluia. „Pentru ce", ziceau ei, „să găsească împărații Asiriei, la venirea lor, ape din belșug?" 5 Ezechia s-a*Is. 22:9,10. îmbărbătat; a zidit*Cap. 25:23. din nou zidul care era stricat și l-a ridicat până la turnuri. A mai zidit un alt zid în afară, a întărit Milo*2 Sam. 5:9.1 Împ. 9:24., în cetatea lui David, și a pregătit o mulțime de arme și de scuturi. 6 A pus căpetenii de război peste popor și le-a adunat la el pe locul deschis de la poarta cetății. Vorbindu-le inimii, a zis: 7 „Întăriți-vă*Deut. 31:6. și îmbărbătați-vă! Nu vă*Cap. 20:15. temeți și nu vă înspăimântați înaintea împăratului Asiriei și înaintea întregii mulțimi care este cu el, căci cu noi*2 Împ. 6:16. sunt mai mulți decât cu el! 8 Cu el este un braț de carne*Ier. 17:5.1 Ioan 4:4., dar cu*Cap. 13:12.Rom. 8:31. noi este Domnul Dumnezeul nostru, care ne va ajuta și va lupta pentru noi." Poporul a avut încredere în cuvintele lui Ezechia, împăratul lui Iuda.

9 După aceea*2 Împ. 18:17., Sanherib, împăratul Asiriei, a trimis pe slujitorii săi la Ierusalim pe când era înaintea Lachisului cu toate puterile lui; i-a trimis la Ezechia, împăratul lui Iuda, și la toți cei din Iuda care erau la Ierusalim să le spună: 10 „Așa*2 Împ. 18:19. vorbește Sanherib, împăratul Asiriei: ‘Pe ce se bizuiește încrederea voastră, de stați împresurați la Ierusalim? 11 Oare nu vă amăgește Ezechia, ca să vă dea morții prin foamete și prin sete, când zice: «Domnul*2 Împ. 18:30. Dumnezeul nostru ne va scăpa din mâna împăratului Asiriei»? 12 Oare nu*2 Împ. 18:22. Ezechia a îndepărtat înălțimile și altarele Domnului și a dat porunca aceasta lui Iuda și Ierusalimului: «Să vă închinați numai unui altar și să aduceți tămâie numai pe el»? 13 Nu știți ce am făcut noi, eu și părinții mei, tuturor popoarelor celorlalte țări? Dumnezeii neamurilor acestor țări au putut*2 Împ. 18:33-35. ei să le izbăvească țările din mâna mea? 14 Care dintre toți dumnezeii acestor neamuri pe care le-au nimicit părinții mei a putut să izbăvească pe poporul lui din mâna mea, pentru ca să vă poată izbăvi Dumnezeul vostru din mâna mea? 15 Să*2 Împ. 18:29. nu vă amăgească Ezechia dar și să nu vă înșele astfel; nu vă încredeți în el! Căci dumnezeul niciunui neam, niciunei împărății n-a putut să izbăvească pe poporul lui din mâna mea și din mâna părinților mei: cu cât mai puțin vă va izbăvi Dumnezeul vostru din mâna mea!’" 16 Slujitorii lui Sanherib au mai vorbit și alte lucruri împotriva Domnului Dumnezeu și împotriva robului Său Ezechia. 17 Și a trimis o scrisoare*2 Împ. 19:9. batjocoritoare pentru Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel, vorbind astfel împotriva Lui: „După cum*2 Împ. 19:12. dumnezeii neamurilor celorlalte țări n-au putut să izbăvească pe poporul lor din mâna mea, tot așa nici Dumnezeul lui Ezechia nu va izbăvi pe poporul Său din mâna mea." 18 Slujitorii lui Sanherib au strigat*2 Împ. 18:28. cu glas tare în limba evreiască, pentru ca să arunce groaza și spaima în poporul din Ierusalim, care*2 Împ. 18:26-28. era pe zid, și să poată pune astfel stăpânire pe cetate. 19 Au vorbit despre Dumnezeul Ierusalimului ca despre dumnezeii popoarelor pământului, care sunt lucrarea*2 Împ. 19:18. mâinilor omenești.

20 Împăratul Ezechia*2 Împ. 19:15. și prorocul Isaia*2 Împ. 19:2,4., fiul lui Amoț, au început să se roage pentru lucrul acesta și au strigat către cer. 21 Atunci, Domnul a trimis*2 Împ. 19:35. un înger care a nimicit în tabăra împăratului Asiriei pe toți vitejii, domnitorii și căpeteniile. Și împăratul s-a întors rușinat în țara lui. A intrat în casa dumnezeului său, și cei ce ieșiseră din coapsele lui l-au ucis acolo cu sabia. 22 Astfel a scăpat Domnul pe Ezechia și pe locuitorii Ierusalimului din mâna lui Sanherib, împăratul Asiriei, și din mâna tuturor și i-a ocrotit împotriva celor ce-i împresurau. 23 Mulți au adus Domnului daruri în Ierusalim și au adus daruri bogate*Cap. 17:5. lui Ezechia, împăratul lui Iuda, care de atunci s-a înălțat*Cap. 1:1. în ochii tuturor popoarelor.

24 În vremea*2 Împ. 20:1.Is. 38:1. aceea, Ezechia a fost bolnav de moarte. El a făcut o rugăciune Domnului. Domnul i-a vorbit și i-a dat un semn. 25 Dar Ezechia n-a răsplătit*Ps. 116:12. binefacerea pe care a primit-o, căci i s-a îngâmfat*Cap. 26:16.Hab. 2:4. inima. Mânia*Cap. 24:18. Domnului a venit peste el, peste Iuda și peste Ierusalim. 26 Atunci, Ezechia*Ier. 26:18,19. s-a smerit din mândria lui, împreună cu locuitorii Ierusalimului, și mânia Domnului n-a venit peste ei în timpul*2 Împ. 20:19. vieții lui Ezechia. 27 Ezechia a avut multe bogății și multă slavă. Și-a făcut vistierii de argint, de aur, de pietre scumpe, de mirodenii, de scuturi și de toate lucrurile care se pot dori; 28 hambare pentru roadele de grâu, de must și de untdelemn, grajduri pentru tot felul de vite și staule pentru oi. 29 Și-a zidit cetăți și a avut belșug de boi și de oi, căci Dumnezeu îi dăduse multe*1 Cron. 29:12. avuții. 30 Tot Ezechia*Is. 22:9,11. a astupat și gura de sus a apelor Ghihon și le-a adus în jos, spre apus de cetatea lui David. Ezechia a izbutit în toate lucrările lui. 31 Însă, când au trimis căpeteniile Babilonului soli la*2 Împ. 20:12.Is. 39:1. el să întrebe de minunea care avusese loc în țară, Dumnezeu l-a părăsit ca să-l încerce*Deut. 8:2., pentru ca să cunoască tot ce era în inima lui. 32 Celelalte fapte ale lui Ezechia și faptele lui evlavioase sunt scrise în vedenia*Is. 36;37;38;39. prorocului Isaia, fiul lui Amoț, în cartea*2 Împ. 18;19;20. împăraților lui Iuda și Israel. 33 Ezechia a adormit*2 Împ. 20:21. cu părinții săi și l-au îngropat în cel mai bun loc al mormintelor fiilor lui David. Tot Iuda și locuitorii Ierusalimului i-au dat*Prov. 10:7. cinste la moarte. Și, în locul lui, a domnit fiul său Manase.
