1 Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. 2 And he did what was right in the sight of Jehovah, and walked in the ways of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand nor to the left. 3 And in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of David his father; and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the Asherahs, and the graven images, and the molten images. 4 And they broke down the altars of the Baals in his presence; and the sun-pillars that were on high above them he cut down; and the Asherahs and the graven images and the molten images he broke in pieces, and made dust of themand strewed it upon the graves of those that had sacrificed to them; 5 and he burned the bones of the priests upon their altars, and purged Judah and Jerusalem. 6 And so did he in the cities of Manasseh and Ephraim and Simeon, even to Naphtali, in their ruins round about; 7 and he broke down the altars, and beat the Asherahs and the graven images into powder, and cut down all the sun-pillars throughout the land of Israel, and returned to Jerusalem.

8 And in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he purged the land and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the chronicler, to repair the house of Jehovah his God*GodHebrew: Elohim9 And they came to Hilkijah the high priest, and they delivered to them the money that had been brought into the house of God*GodHebrew: Elohim which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin, and of the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 10 And they gave it into the hand of them that did the work, that had the oversight of the house of Jehovah; and they gave it to the workmen who wrought in the house of Jehovah to reinstate and repair the house: 11 they gave it to the carpenters and the builders, to buy hewn stone, and timber for the joists, and to floor the houses that the kings of Judah had destroyed. 12 And the men did the work faithfully. And over them were appointed Jahath and Obadiah, Levites, of the children of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the children of the Kohathites, for the oversight; and all these Levites were skilled in instruments of music. 13 They were also over the bearers of burdens, and were overseers of all that worked in any manner of service. And of the Levites were the scribes, and officers, and doorkeepers.

14 And when they brought out the money that had been brought into the house of Jehovah, Hilkijah the priest found the book of the law of Jehovah by Moses. 15 Then Hilkijah spoke and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of Jehovah. And Hilkijah gave the book to Shaphan. 16 And Shaphan carried the book to the king. And moreover he brought the king word again saying, All that was committed to the hand of thy servants, they do; 17 and they have emptied out the money that was found in the house of Jehovah, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and into the hand of the workmen. 18 And Shaphan the scribe informed the king saying, Hilkijah the priest has given me a book. And Shaphan read out of it before the king. 19 And it came to pass when the king heard the words of the law, that he rent his garments. 20 And the king commanded Hilkijah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king, saying, 21 Go, inquire of Jehovah for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book which is found; for great is the wrath of Jehovah that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of Jehovah, to do according to all that is written in this book. 22 And Hilkijah and they that the king had appointed went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tokehath, son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe: now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the second quarter of the town; and they spoke with her to that effect. 23 And she said to them, Thus saith Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel: Tell the man that sent you to me, 24 Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah. 25 Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my fury shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched. 26 But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Jehovah, thus shall ye say to him: Thus saith Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel touching the words which thou hast heard: 27 Because thy heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God*GodHebrew: Elohim when thou heardest his words against this place and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy garments and weep before me, I also have heard thee, saith Jehovah. 28 Behold, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof. And they brought the king word again.

29 And the king sent and gathered all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem. 30 And the king went up into the house of Jehovah, and all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests and the Levites, and all the people, great and small; and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which had been found in the house of Jehovah. 31 And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before Jehovah, to walk after Jehovah, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all his heart and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant that are written in this book. 32 And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God*GodHebrew: Elohim the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of their fathers. 33 And Josiah removed all the abominations out of all the countries that belonged to the children of Israel, and made to serve all that were found in Israel, — to serve Jehovah their God*GodHebrew: Elohim all his days they did not depart from following Jehovah, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of their fathers.

Iuda și Ierusalimul de înălțimi*Cap. 33:17,22., de idolii Astarteei, de chipuri cioplite și de chipuri turnate. 4 Au dărâmat*Lev. 26:30.2 Împ. 23:4. înaintea lui altarele baalilor și au tăiat stâlpii închinați soarelui, care erau deasupra lor; a sfărâmat idolii Astarteei, chipurile cioplite și chipurile turnate, le-a făcut praf, a presărat praful pe mormintele*2 Împ. 23:6. celor ce le aduseseră jertfe 5 și a ars*1 Împ. 13:2. oasele preoților pe altarele lor. Astfel a curățit Iuda și Ierusalimul. 6 În cetățile lui Manase, lui Efraim, lui Simeon și chiar lui Neftali, pretutindeni, în mijlocul dărâmăturilor lor, 7 a dărâmat altarele, a făcut bucăți idolii Astarteei și chipurile cioplite, le-a făcut praf*Deut. 9:21. și a tăiat toți stâlpii închinați soarelui în toată țara lui Israel. Apoi s-a întors la Ierusalim. 8 În al*2 Împ. 22:3. optsprezecelea an al domniei lui, după ce a curățit țara și casa, a trimis pe Șafan, fiul lui Ațalia, pe Maaseia, căpetenia cetății, și pe Ioah, fiul lui Ioahaz, arhivarul, să dreagă Casa Domnului Dumnezeului său. 9 S-au dus la marele preot Hilchia și au dat argintul*2 Împ. 12:4. adus în Casa lui Dumnezeu, pe care-l strânseseră leviții păzitori ai pragului, de la Manase și Efraim și de la toată cealaltă parte a lui Israel și de la tot Iuda și Beniamin și de la locuitorii Ierusalimului. 10 L-au dat în mâinile meșterilor însărcinați cu facerea lucrării în Casa Domnului. Aceștia l-au dat lucrătorilor care munceau la dregerea Casei Domnului, 11 iar ei l-au dat tâmplarilor și zidarilor, ca să cumpere pietre cioplite și lemne pentru grinzi și pentru căptușitul clădirilor pe care le stricaseră împărații lui Iuda. 12 Oamenii aceștia au lucrat cinstit în lucrul lor. Erau puși sub privegherea lui Iahat și Obadia, leviți din fiii lui Merari, și a lui Zaharia și Meșulam, din fiii chehatiților. Toți aceia dintre leviți care știau să cânte bine 13 vegheau asupra lucrărilor și cârmuiau pe toți lucrătorii care aveau de făcut felurite lucrări. Mai erau și alți leviți*1 Cron. 23:4,5., logofeți, dregători și ușieri.

14 În clipa când au scos argintul care fusese adus în Casa Domnului, preotul Hilchia a găsit*2 Împ. 22:8. cartea Legii Domnului, dată prin Moise. 15 Atunci, Hilchia a luat cuvântul și a zis logofătului Șafan: „Am găsit cartea Legii în Casa Domnului." Și Hilchia a dat lui Șafan cartea. 16 Șafan a adus împăratului cartea. Și, când a dat socoteală împăratului, a zis: „Slujitorii tăi au făcut tot ce li s-a poruncit. 17 Au strâns argintul care se afla în Casa Domnului și l-au dat în mâinile priveghetorilor și lucrătorilor." 18 Logofătul Șafan a mai spus împăratului: „Preotul Hilchia mi-a dat o carte." Și Șafan a citit-o înaintea împăratului. 19 Când a auzit împăratul cuvintele Legii, și-a sfâșiat hainele. 20 Și împăratul a dat următoarea poruncă lui Hilchia, lui Ahicam, fiul lui Șafan, lui Abdon, fiul lui Mica, lui Șafan, logofătul, și lui Asaia, slujitorul împăratului: 21 „Duceți-vă și întrebați pe Domnul pentru mine și pentru rămășița lui Israel și Iuda cu privire la cuvintele cărții acesteia care s-a găsit! Căci mare mânie s-a vărsat peste noi din partea Domnului, pentru că părinții noștri n-au ținut cuvântul Domnului și n-au împlinit tot ce este scris în cartea aceasta." 22 Hilchia și cei trimiși de împărat s-au dus la prorocița Hulda, nevasta lui Șalum, fiul lui Tochehat*2 Împ. 22:14., fiul lui Hasra, străjerul veșmintelor. Ea locuia la Ierusalim, în cealaltă mahala a cetății. După ce au spus ce aveau de spus, 23 ea le-a răspuns: „Așa vorbește Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel: ‘Spuneți omului care v-a trimis la mine: 24 «Așa vorbește Domnul: ‹Iată, voi trimite nenorociri peste locul acesta și peste locuitorii lui, și anume toate blestemele scrise în cartea care s-a citit înaintea împăratului lui Iuda. 25 Pentru că M-au părăsit și au adus tămâie altor dumnezei, mâniindu-Mă prin toate lucrările mâinilor lor, mânia Mea s-a vărsat asupra acestui loc și nu se va stinge.›» 26 Dar să spuneți împăratului lui Iuda care v-a trimis să întrebați pe Domnul: «Așa vorbește Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel cu privire la cuvintele pe care le-ai auzit: 27 ‹Pentru că ți s-a înduioșat inima, pentru că te-ai smerit înaintea lui Dumnezeu când ai auzit cuvintele rostite de El împotriva acestui loc și împotriva locuitorilor lui, pentru că te-ai smerit înaintea Mea, pentru că ți-ai sfâșiat hainele și ai plâns înaintea Mea, și Eu am auzit›, zice Domnul, 28 ‹iată, te voi strânge lângă părinții tăi, vei fi adăugat în pace în mormântul tău și nu vei vedea cu ochii tăi toate nenorocirile pe care le voi trimite peste locul acesta și peste locuitorii lui.›»’" Ei au adus împăratului răspunsul acesta.

29 Împăratul*2 Împ. 23:1. a strâns pe toți bătrânii din Iuda și din Ierusalim. 30 Apoi s-a suit la Casa Domnului cu toți oamenii lui Iuda și cu locuitorii Ierusalimului, cu preoții și leviții și cu tot poporul, de la cel mai mare până la cel mai mic. A citit înaintea lor toate cuvintele cărții legământului care se găsise în Casa Domnului. 31 Împăratul stătea*2 Împ. 11:14;23:3. Cap. 6:13. pe scaunul lui împărătesc și a încheiat legământ înaintea Domnului, îndatorându-se să urmeze pe Domnul și să păzească poruncile Lui, învățăturile Lui și legile Lui din toată inima și din tot sufletul lui și să împlinească cuvintele legământului scrise în cartea aceasta. 32 Și a făcut să intre în legământ toți cei ce se aflau la Ierusalim și în Beniamin. Și locuitorii Ierusalimului au lucrat după legământul lui Dumnezeu, legământul Dumnezeului părinților lor. 33 Iosia a îndepărtat toate urâciunile*1 Împ. 11:5. din toate țările copiilor lui Israel și a făcut ca toți cei ce se aflau în Israel să slujească Domnului Dumnezeului lor. În tot timpul*Ier. 3:10. vieții lui, nu s-au abătut de la Domnul Dumnezeul părinților lor.
