1 In the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam began Abijah to reign over Judah. 2 He reigned three years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Michaiah, the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. 3 And Abijah began the war with an army of men of war, four hundred thousand chosen men; and Jeroboam set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, mighty men of valour. 4 And Abijah stood up on the top of mount Zemaraim, which is in mount Ephraim, and said, Hear me, Jeroboam, and all Israel! 5 Ought ye not to know that Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt? 6 But Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up and rebelled against his lord. 7 And vain men, sons of Belial, gathered to him and strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, and Rehoboam was young and faint-hearted, and did not shew himself strong against them. 8 And now ye think to shew yourselves strong against the kingdom of Jehovah in the hand of the sons of David; and ye are a great multitude, and ye have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made you for gods. 9 Have ye not cast out the priests of Jehovah, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and made you priests as the peoples of the lands? whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, he becomes a priest of what is not God*GodHebrew: Elohim10 But as for us, Jehovah is our God*GodHebrew: Elohim and we have not forsaken him; and the priests that serve Jehovah are the sons of Aaron, and the Levites are at their work: 11 and they burn to Jehovah every morning and every evening burnt-offerings and sweet incense; the loaves also are set in order upon the pure table; and the candlestick of gold with its lamps to burn every evening: for we keep the charge of Jehovah our God*GodHebrew: Elohim but ye have forsaken him. 12 And behold, we have God*GodHebrew: Elohim with us at our head, and his priests, and the loud-sounding trumpets to sound an alarm against you. Children of Israel, do not fight with Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.

13 But Jeroboam caused an ambush to come about behind them; and they were before Judah, and the ambush behind them. 14 And Judah looked back, and behold, they had the battle in front and behind; and they cried to Jehovah, and the priests sounded with the trumpets. 15 And the men of Judah gave a shout; and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass that God*GodHebrew: Elohim smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah. 16 And the children of Israel fled before Judah; and God*GodHebrew: Elohim delivered them into their hand. 17 And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter; and there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men. 18 And the children of Israel were humbled at that time, and the children of Judah were strengthened, because they relied upon Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of their fathers. 19 And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him: Bethel with its dependent villages, and Jeshanah with its dependent villages, and Ephron with its dependent villages. 20 And Jeroboam did not recover strength again in the days of Abijah; and Jehovah smote him, and he died. 21 But Abijah strengthened himself, and took fourteen wives, and begot twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters. 22 And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways and his sayings, are written in the treatise of the prophet Iddo.

Între Abia și Ieroboam a fost război. 3 Abia a început lupta cu o oaste de războinici viteji, patru sute de mii de oameni aleși, și Ieroboam s-a înșiruit de bătaie împotriva lui cu opt sute de mii de oameni aleși, războinici viteji. 4 De pe vârful muntelui Țemaraim*Ios. 18:22., care face parte din muntele lui Efraim, Abia s-a sculat și a zis: „Ascultați-mă, Ieroboame și tot Israelul! 5 Nu trebuie oare să știți că Domnul Dumnezeul lui Israel a dat*2 Sam. 7:12,13,16. pe vecie domnia peste Israel lui David și fiilor lui printr-un legământ*Num. 18:19. care nu se poate călca? 6 Dar Ieroboam, fiul lui Nebat, slujitorul lui Solomon, fiul lui David, s-a sculat*1 Împ. 11:26;12:20. și s-a răzvrătit împotriva stăpânului său. 7 Niște oameni*Jud. 9:4. de nimic, oameni răi, s-au strâns la el și s-au împotrivit lui Roboam, fiul lui Solomon. Roboam era tânăr și fricos și nu putea să li se împotrivească. 8 Și acum, voi credeți că puteți ieși biruitori asupra împărăției Domnului, care este în mâinile fiilor lui David, și voi sunteți o mare mulțime și aveți cu voi vițeii de aur pe care vi i-a făcut*1 Împ. 12:28;14:9.Osea 8:6. Ieroboam ca dumnezei. 9 N-ați*Cap. 11:14,15. îndepărtat voi pe preoții Domnului, pe fiii lui Aaron și pe leviți și nu v-ați făcut voi preoți, ca și popoarele celorlalte țări? Oricine*Exod 29:35. venea cu un vițel și șapte berbeci ca să fie sfințit se făcea preot al celui ce nu este Dumnezeu. 10 Dar, cât despre noi, Domnul este Dumnezeul nostru și noi nu L-am părăsit, preoții din slujba Domnului sunt fii ai lui Aaron și leviții stau și își împlinesc slujbele. 11 Noi aducem*Cap. 2:4. în fiecare dimineață și în fiecare seară arderi-de-tot Domnului, ardem tămâie mirositoare, punem pâinile*Lev. 24:6. pentru punerea înaintea Domnului pe masa cea curată și aprindem*Exod 27:20,21.Lev. 24:2,3. în fiecare seară sfeșnicul de aur cu candelele lui, căci păzim poruncile Domnului Dumnezeului nostru. Dar voi L-ați părăsit. 12 Iată că Dumnezeu și preoții Lui*Num. 10:8. sunt cu noi, în fruntea noastră, și avem și trâmbițele răsunătoare, ca să sunăm din ele împotriva voastră. Copii ai lui Israel, nu faceți*Fapte 5:39. război împotriva Domnului Dumnezeului părinților voștri, căci nu veți avea nicio izbândă!" 13 Ieroboam i-a luat pe dinapoi, cu ajutorul unor oameni puși la pândă, așa că oștile lui erau în fața lui Iuda, iar cei ce stăteau la pândă erau înapoia lor. 14 Cei din Iuda, întorcându-se, au avut de luptat înainte și înapoi. Au strigat către Domnul, și preoții au sunat din trâmbițe. 15 Oamenii lui Iuda au scos un strigăt de război și, la strigătul de război al oamenilor lui Iuda, Domnul a lovit*Cap. 14:12. pe Ieroboam și pe tot Israelul dinaintea lui Abia și a lui Iuda. 16 Copiii lui Israel au fugit dinaintea lui Iuda, și Dumnezeu i-a dat în mâinile lui. 17 Abia și poporul lui le-au pricinuit o mare înfrângere și cinci sute de mii de oameni aleși au căzut morți printre cei din Israel. 18 Copiii lui Israel au fost smeriți în vremea aceea, și copiii lui Iuda au câștigat biruința pentru că se sprijiniseră*1 Cron. 5:20.Ps. 22:5. pe Domnul Dumnezeul părinților lor. 19 Abia a urmărit pe Ieroboam și i-a luat cetăți: Betelul cu satele lui, Ieșana cu satele ei și Efronul*Ios. 15:9. cu satele lui. 20 Ieroboam n-a mai avut putere pe vremea lui Abia, și Domnul l-a*1 Sam. 25:38. lovit și a*1 Împ. 14:20. murit. 21 Dar Abia a ajuns puternic; a avut paisprezece neveste și a născut douăzeci și doi de fii și șaisprezece fete. 22 Celelalte fapte ale lui Abia, ce a făcut și ce a spus el, sunt scrise în cartea prorocului Ido*Cap. 12:15..
