1 And Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David. And Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years. 2 And Asa did what was good and right in the sight of Jehovah his God*GodHebrew: Elohim3 and he took away the altars of the strange gods and the high places, and broke the columns, and cut down the Asherahs; 4 and commanded Judah to seek Jehovah the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of their fathers, and to practise the law and the commandment. 5 And he removed out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the sun-images; and the kingdom was quiet before him. 6 And he built fortified cities in Judah, for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because Jehovah had given him rest. 7 And he said to Judah, Let us build these cities, and surround them with walls and towers, gates and bars, while the land is yet before us; for we have sought Jehovah our God*GodHebrew: Elohim we have sought him, and he has given us rest on every side. And they built and prospered. 8 And Asa had an army that bore targets and spears: out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bore shields and drew the bow, two hundred and eighty thousand: all these, mighty men of valour.

9 And Zerah the Ethiopian came out against him with a host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots, and he came to Mareshah. 10 And Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah near Mareshah. 11 And Asa cried unto Jehovah his God*GodHebrew: Elohim and said, Jehovah, it maketh no difference to thee to help, whether there be much or no power: help us, O Jehovah our God*GodHebrew: Elohim for we rely on thee, and in thy name have we come against this multitude. Jehovah, thou art our God*GodHebrew: Elohim let not man prevail against thee. 12 And Jehovah smote the Ethiopians before Asa and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled. 13 And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them to Gerar; and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that none of them was left alive; for they were crushed before Jehovah and before his army. And they carried away very much spoil. 14 And they smote all the cities round about Gerar, for the terror of Jehovah came upon them; and they spoiled all the cities, for there was very much spoil in them. 15 They smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.

1 Abia a adormit cu părinții lui și a fost îngropat în cetatea lui David. Și, în locul lui, a domnit fiul său Asa. Pe vremea lui, țara a avut odihnă zece ani.

2 Asa*1 Împ. 15:8. a făcut ce este bine și plăcut înaintea Domnului Dumnezeului său. 3 A îndepărtat altarele dumnezeilor străini și înălțimile*1 Împ. 15:14. Cap. 15:17., a sfărâmat*Exod 34:13. stâlpii idolești și a tăiat*1 Împ. 11:7. astarteele. 4 A poruncit lui Iuda să caute pe Domnul Dumnezeul părinților săi și să împlinească Legea și poruncile. 5 A îndepărtat din toate cetățile lui Iuda înălțimile și stâlpii închinați soarelui. Și împărăția a avut pace sub el. 6 A zidit cetăți întărite în Iuda, căci țara a fost liniștită și împotriva lui n-a fost război în anii aceia, pentru că Domnul i-a dat odihnă. 7 El a zis lui Iuda: „Să zidim aceste cetăți și să le înconjurăm cu ziduri, cu turnuri, cu porți și cu zăvoare; țara este încă a noastră, căci am căutat pe Domnul Dumnezeul nostru. L-am căutat, și El ne-a dat odihnă din toate părțile." Au zidit dar și au izbutit. 8 Asa avea o oștire de trei sute de mii de oameni din Iuda, care purtau scut și suliță, și două sute optzeci de mii din Beniamin, care purtau scut și trăgeau cu arcul, toți oameni viteji.

9 Zerah*Cap. 16:8., Etiopianul, a ieșit împotriva lor cu o oștire de un milion de oameni și trei sute de care și a înaintat până la Mareșa*Ios. 15:44.. 10 Asa a mers înaintea lui și s-au înșiruit de bătaie în valea Țefata, lângă Mareșa. 11 Asa*Exod 14:10. Cap. 13:14.Ps. 22:5. a chemat pe Domnul Dumnezeul lui și a zis: „Doamne, numai Tu poți veni în ajutor*1 Sam. 14:6. celui slab ca și celui tare, vino în ajutorul nostru, Doamne, Dumnezeul nostru! Căci pe Tine ne sprijinim și în Numele Tău*1 Sam. 17:45.Prov. 18:10. am venit împotriva acestei mulțimi. Doamne, Tu ești Dumnezeul nostru: să nu iasă biruitor omul împotriva Ta!" 12 Domnul a lovit*Cap. 13:15. pe etiopieni dinaintea lui Asa și dinaintea lui Iuda, și etiopienii au luat-o la fugă. 13 Asa și poporul care era cu el i-au urmărit până la Gherar*Gen. 10:19;20:1., și etiopienii au căzut fără să-și poată scăpa viața, căci au fost nimiciți de Domnul și de oștirea Lui. Asa și poporul lui au făcut o pradă mare; 14 au bătut toate cetățile din împrejurimile Gherarului, căci groaza*Gen. 35:5. Cap. 17:10. Domnului căzuse peste ele, și au jefuit toate cetățile a căror pradă era mare. 15 Au lovit și corturile turmelor și au luat cu ei o mare mulțime de oi și de cămile. Apoi s-au întors la Ierusalim.
