1 And Ahithophel said to Absalom, Let me, I pray, choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David to-night; 2 and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed, and will make him afraid; and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only; 3 and I will bring back all the people to thee. The man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: all the people shall be in peace. 4 And the saying was right in the eyes of Absalom, and in the eyes of all the elders of Israel. 5 And Absalom said, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and we will hear also what he says. 6 And Hushai came to Absalom, and Absalom spoke to him saying, Ahithophel has spoken after this manner: shall we carry out his word? If not, speak thou. 7 And Hushai said to Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel has given this time is not good. 8 And Hushai said, Thou knowest thy father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are of exasperated spirit, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field; and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people. 9 Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or some such place; and it will come to pass, when some of them fall at the first, whoever heareth it will say, There has been slaughter among the people that follow Absalom, 10 and even the valiant man whose heart is as the heart of a lion shall utterly melt; for all Israel knows that thy father is a mighty man, and they that are with him are valiant men. 11 But I counsel that all Israel be speedily gathered to thee, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person. 12 And we shall come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falls on the ground; and of him and of all the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one. 13 And if he withdraw into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the torrent, until there be not one small stone found there. 14 And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. And Jehovah had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, in order that Jehovah might bring evil upon Absalom.

15 And Hushai said to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled. 16 And now send quickly, and tell David saying, Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him. 17 And Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel; and the maid went and told them; and they went and told king David, for they might not be seen to come into the city. 18 But a lad saw them, and told Absalom. Then they went both of them away quickly, and came to the house of a man at Bahurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down there. 19 And the woman took and spread the covering over the well’s mouth, and spread ground corn on it; and the thing was not known. 20 And Absalom’s servants came to the woman to the house, and said, Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said to them, They have gone over the brook of water. And they sought and could not find them, and returned to Jerusalem. 21 And it came to pass after they had departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David; and they said to David, Arise and pass quickly over the water; for thus has Ahithophel counselled against you.

22 Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over the Jordan; by the morning light there was not one of them missing that had not gone over the Jordan. 23 And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose and went to his house, to his city, and gave charge to his household, and hanged himself, and he died; and he was buried in the sepulchre of his father. 24 And David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him. 25 And Absalom set Amasa over the host instead of Joab; which Amasa was the son of a man whose name was Jithra the Israelite, that went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah, Joab’s mother. 26 And Israel and Absalom encamped in the land of Gilead. 27 And as soon as David came to Mahanaim, Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim, 28 brought beds, and basons, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and parched corn, and beans, and lentils, and parched pulse, 29 and honey, and cream, and sheep, and cheese of kine to David, and to the people that were with him, to eat; for they said, The people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty in the wilderness.

1 Ahitofel a zis lui Absalom: „Lasă-mă să aleg douăsprezece mii de oameni! Mă voi scula și voi urmări pe David chiar în noaptea aceasta. 2 Îl voi lua pe neașteptate, când va fi obosit*Deut. 25:18. Cap. 16:14. și va avea mâinile slăbite, îl voi înspăimânta și tot poporul care este cu el va fugi. Voi lovi numai pe împărat*Zah. 13:7.3 și voi aduce înapoi la tine pe tot poporul; moartea omului pe care-l urmărești va face ca toți să se întoarcă și tot poporul va fi în pace." 4 Cuvintele acestea au plăcut lui Absalom și tuturor bătrânilor lui Israel. 5 Dar Absalom a zis: „Chemați și pe Hușai, Architul, și să auzim și ce va zice el." 6 Hușai a venit la Absalom, și Absalom i-a zis: „Iată cum a vorbit Ahitofel. Trebuie să facem ce a zis el sau nu? Spune tu!" 7 Hușai a răspuns lui Absalom: „De data aceasta, sfatul pe care ți l-a dat Ahitofel nu este bun." 8 Și Hușai a zis: „Tu cunoști vitejia tatălui tău și a oamenilor lui; sunt înfuriați ca o ursoaică*Osea 13:8. de pe câmp căreia i s-au răpit puii. Tatăl tău este un om de război și nu va petrece noaptea cu poporul; 9 iată, acum stă ascuns în vreo groapă sau în vreun alt loc. Și dacă, de la început, vor cădea unii sub loviturile lor, se va auzi îndată și se va zice: ‘Poporul care urma pe Absalom a fost înfrânt!’ 10 Atunci, cel mai viteaz, chiar dacă ar fi avut o inimă de leu, se va înspăimânta*Ios. 2:11., căci tot Israelul știe că tatăl tău este un viteaz și că are niște viteji cu el. 11 Sfatul meu este dar ca tot Israelul să se strângă la tine, de la Dan*Jud. 20:1. până la Beer-Șeba, o mulțime ca nisipul*Gen. 22:17. de pe marginea mării. Și tu însuți să mergi la luptă. 12 Dacă vom ajunge la el în vreun loc unde l-am găsi, vom cădea peste el cum cade roua pe pământ, și nu va scăpa niciunul, nici el, nici vreunul din oamenii care sunt cu el. 13 Dacă va fugi într-o cetate, tot Israelul va duce funii la cetatea aceea și o vom trage în pârâu până când nu va mai rămâne nicio piatră în ea." 14 Absalom și toți oamenii lui Israel au zis: „Sfatul lui Hușai, Architul, este mai bun decât sfatul lui Ahitofel." Dar Domnul*Cap. 15:31,34. hotărâse să nimicească bunul sfat al lui Ahitofel, ca să aducă nenorocirea peste Absalom.

15 Hușai*Cap. 15:35. a zis preoților Țadoc și Abiatar: „Ahitofel a dat cutare și cutare sfat lui Absalom și bătrânilor lui Israel, și eu i-am sfătuit cutare și cutare lucru. 16 Acum trimiteți îndată știre lui David și spuneți-i: ‘Nu sta noaptea în câmpiile*Cap. 15:28. pustiei, ci du-te mai departe, ca nu cumva împăratul și tot poporul care este cu el să fie în primejdie să piară.’" 17 Ionatan*Cap. 15:27,36. și Ahimaaț stăteau lângă fântâna Roguel*Ios. 15:7;18:16.. Slujnica venea și le aducea știri, iar ei se duceau să dea de veste împăratului David, căci nu îndrăzneau să se arate și să intre în cetate. 18 Dar odată i-a zărit un tânăr și a spus lui Absalom. Ei au plecat amândoi în grabă și au ajuns la Bahurim*Cap. 16:5., la casa unui om care avea o fântână în curte, și s-au coborât în ea. 19 Femeia*Ios. 2:6. a luat o învelitoare, a întins-o peste gura fântânii și a împrăștiat urluială pe ea, ca să nu dea nimic de bănuit. 20 Slujitorii lui Absalom au intrat în casă la femeia aceasta și au zis: „Unde sunt Ahimaaț și Ionatan?" Femeia*Exod 1:19.Ios. 2:4,5. le-a răspuns: „Au trecut pârâul." Au căutat și, negăsindu-i, s-au întors la Ierusalim. 21 După plecarea lor, Ahimaaț și Ionatan au ieșit din fântână și s-au dus să dea de știre împăratului David. Au zis lui David: „Sculați-vă*Vers. 15,16. și grăbiți-vă de treceți apa, căci Ahitofel a plănuit cutare și cutare lucru împotriva voastră." 22 David și tot poporul care era cu el s-au sculat și au trecut Iordanul; când se lumina de ziuă, nu rămăsese niciunul care să nu fi trecut Iordanul. 23 Ahitofel, când a văzut că sfatul lui n-a fost urmat, a pus șaua pe măgar și a plecat acasă, în cetatea*Cap. 15:12. lui. Și-a pus casa în rânduială și s-a spânzurat*Mat. 27:5.. Când a murit, l-au îngropat în mormântul tatălui său.

24 David ajunsese la Mahanaim*Gen. 32:2.Ios. 13:26. Cap. 2:8. când a trecut Absalom Iordanul, însoțit de toți bărbații lui Israel. 25 Absalom a pus pe Amasa în fruntea oștirii, în locul lui Ioab. Amasa era fiul unui om numit Itra, Israelitul, care intrase la Abigal*1 Cron. 2:17., fata lui Nahaș și sora Țeruiei, mama lui Ioab. 26 Israel și Absalom au tăbărât în țara Galaadului. 27 Când a ajuns David la Mahanaim, Șobi*Cap. 10:1;12:29., fiul lui Nahaș, din Raba fiilor lui Amon, Machir*Cap. 9:4., fiul lui Amiel, din Lodebar, și Barzilai*Cap. 19:31,32.1 Împ. 2:7., Galaaditul, din Roghelim, 28 au adus paturi, lighene, vase de pământ, grâu, orz, făină, grâu prăjit, bob, linte, uscături, 29 miere, unt, oi și brânză de vacă. Au adus aceste lucruri lui David și poporului care era cu el, ca să mănânce, căci ziceau: „Poporul acesta trebuie să fi suferit de foame, de oboseală și de sete, în pustie*Cap. 16:2.."
