1 And again the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them saying, Go, number Israel and Judah. 2 And the king said to Joab the captain of the host, who was with him, Go, I pray thee, through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and count the people, that I may know the number of the people. 3 And Joab said to the king, May Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim even add to the people, how many soever they be, a hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it; but why does my lord the king delight in this thing? 4 But the king’s word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the army. And Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king to count the people of Israel. 5 And they passed over the Jordan, and encamped in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the midst of the ravine of Gad, and toward Jaazer. 6 And they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and came to Dan-jaan, and to the environs of Sidon; 7 and they came to the fortified city of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites and of the Canaanites; and went out to the south of Judah, to Beer-sheba. 8 And they went through all the land, and came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. 9 And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people to the king; and there were of Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

10 And David’s heart smote him after he had numbered the people. And David said to Jehovah, I have sinned greatly in what I have done; and now, I beseech thee, Jehovah, put away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly. 11 And when David arose in the morning, the word of Jehovah came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying, 12 Go and say to David, Thus saith Jehovah: I impose on thee three things; choose one of them that I may do it unto thee. 13 And Gad came to David, and told him, and said to him, Shall seven years of famine come to thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine adversaries while they pursue thee? or shall there be three days' pestilence in thy land? Now be aware and consider what word I shall bring again to him that sent me. 14 And David said to Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall, I pray thee, into the hand of Jehovah; for his mercies are great; but let me not fall into the hand of man. 15 And Jehovah sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the set time; and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men. 16 And the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it; but Jehovah repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed among the people, It is enough: withdraw now thine hand. And the angel of Jehovah was by the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite. 17 And David spoke to Jehovah when he saw the angel that smote among the people, and said, Behold, it is I that have sinned, and it is I that have committed iniquity; but these sheep, what have they done? let thy hand, I pray thee, be on me, and on my father’s house!

18 And Gad came that day to David, and said to him, Go up, rear an altar to Jehovah in the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite. 19 And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as Jehovah had commanded. 20 And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on towards him; and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground. 21 And Araunah said, Why is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshing-floor of thee, to build an altar to Jehovah, that the plague may be stayed from the people. 22 And Araunah said to David, Let my lord the king take and offer up that which is good in his sight: see, here are oxen for the burnt-offering, and the threshing-sledges and implements of the oxen for wood. 23 All these things, O king, doth Araunah give to the king. And Araunah said to the king, Jehovah thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim accept thee. 24 And the king said to Araunah, No; but I will in any case buy them of thee at a price: neither will I offer up to Jehovah my God*GodHebrew: Elohim burnt-offerings without cost. And David bought the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. 25 And David built there an altar to Jehovah, and offered up burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. And Jehovah was propitious to the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.

1 Domnul S-a aprins de mânie*Cap. 21:1. din nou împotriva lui Israel și a stârnit pe David împotriva lor, zicând: „Du-te*1 Cron. 27:23,24. și fă numărătoarea lui Israel și a lui Iuda." 2 Și împăratul a zis lui Ioab, căpetenia oștirii, care se afla lângă el: „Străbate toate semințiile lui Israel, de la Dan*Jud. 20:1. până la Beer-Șeba; să se facă numărătoarea poporului și să știu*Ier. 17:5. la cât se ridică numărul lor." 3 Ioab a zis împăratului: „Domnul Dumnezeul tău să facă poporul de o sută de ori mai mare, și împăratul, domnul meu, să vadă cu ochii lui lucrul acesta! Dar pentru ce vrea împăratul, domnul meu, să facă lucrul acesta?" 4 Împăratul a stăruit în porunca pe care o dădea lui Ioab și căpeteniilor oștirii, și Ioab și căpeteniile oștirii au plecat de la împărat ca să facă numărătoarea poporului Israel. 5 Au trecut Iordanul și au tăbărât la Aroer*Deut. 2:36.Ios. 13:9,16., la dreapta cetății care este în mijlocul văii Gad și lângă Iaezer*Num. 22:1,3.. 6 Au venit până la Galaad și în țara lui Tahtim-Hodși. S-au dus până la Dan-Iaan*Ios. 19:47.Jud. 18:29. și în împrejurimile Sidonului*Ios. 19:28.Jud. 18:28.. 7 Au venit până la cetățuia Tir și în toate cetățile heviților și ale canaaniților. Au ieșit spre partea de miazăzi a lui Iuda, la Beer-Șeba. 8 Au străbătut astfel toată țara și au ajuns la Ierusalim după nouă luni și douăzeci de zile. 9 Ioab a dat împăratului numărul poporului: erau*1 Cron. 21:5. în Israel opt sute de mii de oameni de război care scoteau sabia și în Iuda cinci sute de mii de oameni.

10 David a simțit cum îi bătea*1 Sam. 24:5. inima după ce făcuse numărătoarea poporului. Și a zis Domnului: „Am săvârșit un mare*Cap. 12:13. păcat făcând lucrul acesta! Acum, Doamne, binevoiește și iartă nelegiuirea robului Tău, căci am lucrat în totul ca un*1 Sam. 13:13. nebun!" 11 A doua zi, când s-a sculat David, cuvântul Domnului a vorbit astfel prorocului Gad*1 Sam. 22:5., văzătorul*1 Sam. 9:9.1 Cron. 29:29. lui David: 12 „Du-te și spune lui David: ‘Așa vorbește Domnul: «Îți pun înainte trei nenorociri; alege una din ele, și te voi lovi cu ea.»’" 13 Gad s-a dus la David și i-a făcut cunoscut lucrul acesta zicând: „Vrei șapte ani de foamete*1 Cron. 21:13. în țara ta sau să fugi trei luni dinaintea vrăjmașilor tăi, care te vor urmări, sau să bântuie ciuma trei zile în țară? Acum alege și vezi ce trebuie să răspund Celui ce mă trimite." 14 David a răspuns lui Gad: „Sunt într-o mare strâmtorare! O, mai bine să cădem în mâinile Domnului, căci îndurările*Ps. 103:8,13,14;119:156. Lui sunt nemărginite, dar să nu*Is. 47:6.Zah. 1:15. cad în mâinile oamenilor!" 15 Domnul*1 Cron. 21:14;27:24. a trimis ciuma în Israel de dimineață până la vremea hotărâtă. Și, din Dan până la Beer-Șeba, au murit șaptezeci de mii de oameni din popor. 16 Pe*Exod 12:23.1 Cron. 21:15. când îngerul întindea mâna peste Ierusalim ca să-l nimicească, Domnul S-a căit*Gen. 6:6.1 Sam. 15:11.Ioel 2:13,14. de răul acela și a zis îngerului care ucidea poporul: „Destul! Trage-ți mâna acum." Îngerul Domnului era lângă aria lui Aravna*1 Cron. 21:15. Vers. 18.2 Cron. 3:1., Iebusitul. 17 David, văzând pe îngerul care lovea pe popor, a zis Domnului: „Iată că am*1 Cron. 21:17. păcătuit! Eu sunt vinovat. Dar oile acestea ce au făcut? Mâna Ta să se îndrepte dar împotriva mea și împotriva casei tatălui meu!" 18 În ziua aceea, Gad a venit la David și i-a zis: „Suie-te*1 Cron. 21:18. și înalță un altar Domnului în aria lui Aravna, Iebusitul." 19 David s-a suit, după cuvântul lui Gad, cum poruncise Domnul. 20 Aravna s-a uitat și a văzut pe împărat și pe slujitorii lui îndreptându-se spre el și Aravna a ieșit și s-a închinat înaintea împăratului, cu fața la pământ. 21 Aravna a zis: „Pentru ce vine domnul meu împăratul la slujitorul lui?" Și David*Gen. 23:8-16. a răspuns: „Ca să cumpăr de la tine aria și să zidesc în ea un altar Domnului, pentru ca să înceteze urgia*Num. 16:48,50. aceasta de peste popor." 22 Aravna a zis lui David: „Să ia domnul meu împăratul aria și să aducă în ea jertfele care-i vor plăcea; vezi*1 Împ. 19:21., boii vor fi pentru arderea-de-tot și carele cu uneltele lor vor ține loc de lemne." 23 Aravna a dat împăratului totul. Și Aravna a zis împăratului: „Domnul Dumnezeul tău să te*Ezec. 20:40,41. primească!" 24 Dar împăratul a zis lui Aravna: „Nu! Vreau s-o cumpăr de la tine pe preț de argint și nu voi aduce Domnului Dumnezeului meu arderi-de-tot care să nu mă coste nimic." Și David a cumpărat*1 Cron. 21:24,25. aria și boii cu cincizeci de sicli de argint. 25 David a zidit acolo un altar Domnului și a adus arderi-de-tot și jertfe de mulțumire.

Atunci, Domnul*Cap. 21:14. a fost potolit față de țară și a încetat urgia*Vers. 21. de deasupra lui Israel.
