1 And it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared for himself chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him. 2 And Absalom rose early, and stood beside the way of the gate; and it was so, that when any man who had a controversy had to come to the king for judgment, then Absalom called him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel. 3 And Absalom said to him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man to hear thee appointed by the king. 4 And Absalom said, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who has any controversy and cause might come to me, and I would do him justice! 5 And it was so, that when any man came near to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him. 6 And in this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment; and Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

7 And it came to pass at the end of forty years, that Absalom said to the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay in Hebron my vow which I have vowed to Jehovah. 8 For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode in Geshur in Syria, saying, If Jehovah shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve Jehovah. 9 And the king said to him, Go in peace. And he rose up and went to Hebron. 10 And Absalom sent emissaries into all the tribes of Israel, saying, When ye hear the sound of the trumpet, ye shall say, Absalom reigns in Hebron. 11 And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were invited; and they went in their simplicity, and they knew nothing. 12 And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counsellor, from his city, from Giloh, while he offered the sacrifices. And the conspiracy gathered strength; and the people increased continually with Absalom.

13 And there came one to David who reported saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom. 14 And David said to all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Rise up and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom. Be quick to depart, lest he overtake us quickly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword. 15 And the king’s servants said to the king, Behold, thy servants will do whatever my lord the king shall choose. 16 And the king went forth, and all his household after him, and the king left ten women, concubines, to keep the house. 17 And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and stayed at the remote house. 18 And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men that came after him from Gath, passed over before the king. 19 And the king said to Ittai the Gittite, Why dost thou also go with us? return to thy place, and abide with the king; for thou art a foreigner, and besides, thou hast emigrated to the place where thou dwellest. 20 Thou didst come yesterday, and should I this day make thee go up and down with us, seeing I go whither I can? Return and take back thy brethren. Mercy and truth be with thee! 21 And Ittai answered the king and said, As Jehovah liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be. 22 And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him. 23 And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over; the king also himself passed over the torrent Kidron, and all the people passed over, towards the way of the wilderness.

24 And behold, Zadok also, and all the Levites with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God*GodHebrew: Elohim and they set down the ark of God*GodHebrew: Elohim and Abiathar went up, until all the people had passed completely out of the city. 25 And the king said to Zadok, Carry back the ark of God*GodHebrew: Elohim into the city. If I shall find favour in the eyes of Jehovah, he will bring me again, and shew me it, and its habitation. 26 But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good to him. 27 And the king said to Zadok the priest, Thou art the seer: return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar. 28 See, I will stop in the plains of the desert, until there come word from you to inform me. 29 And Zadok and Abiathar carried the ark of God*GodHebrew: Elohim again to Jerusalem; and they abode there. 30 But David went up by the ascent of the Olives, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot; and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.

31 And one told David saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. Then said David, Jehovah, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness. 32 And it came to pass, when David had come to the summit, where he worshipped God*GodHebrew: Elohim that behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head. 33 And David said to him, If thou passest on with me, thou wilt be a burden to me; 34 but if thou return to the city, and say to Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father’s servant hitherto, so now will I be thy servant; then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel. 35 And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? and it shall be, that whatsoever thing thou shalt hear out of the king’s house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests. 36 Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok’s son, and Jonathan Abiathar’s son; and by them ye shall send to me everything that ye shall hear. 37 And Hushai David’s friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.

După ce-i răspundea: „Sunt din cutare seminție a lui Israel", 3 Absalom îi zicea: „Iată, pricina ta este bună și dreaptă, dar nimeni din partea împăratului nu te va asculta." 4 Absalom zicea: „De*Jud. 9:29. m-ar pune pe mine judecător în țară! Orice om care ar avea o neînțelegere și o judecată ar veni la mine, și i-aș face dreptate." 5 Și, când se apropia cineva să se închine înaintea lui, el îi întindea mâna, îl apuca și-l săruta. 6 Absalom se purta așa cu toți aceia din Israel care se duceau la împărat să ceară dreptate. Și Absalom câștiga*Rom. 16:18. inima oamenilor lui Israel. 7 După trecere de patruzeci*15:7 Sau: patru. de ani, Absalom a zis împăratului: „Dă-mi voie să mă duc la Hebron să împlinesc o juruință pe care am făcut-o Domnului. 8 Căci robul*Gen. 28:20,21. tău a făcut o juruință*1 Sam. 16:2., când*Cap. 13:38. locuiam la Gheșur, în Siria, și am zis: Dacă mă va aduce Domnul înapoi la Ierusalim, voi da cinste Domnului." 9 Împăratul i-a zis: „Du-te în pace." Absalom s-a sculat și a plecat la Hebron. 10 Absalom a trimis iscoade în toate semințiile lui Israel să spună: „Când veți auzi sunetul trâmbiței, să ziceți: ‘Absalom s-a făcut împărat la Hebron!’" 11 Două sute de oameni din Ierusalim, care fuseseră poftiți*1 Sam. 9:13;16:3,5., au însoțit pe Absalom, și l-au însoțit în prostia*Gen. 20:5. lor fără să știe nimic. 12 Pe când aducea Absalom jertfele, a trimis în cetatea Ghilo după Ahitofel Ghilonitul*Ios. 15:51., sfetnicul*Ps. 41:9;55:12-14. lui David. Uneltirea căpăta putere și poporul se îndrepta în număr tot mai mare*Ps. 3:1. de partea lui Absalom.

13 Cineva a venit și a dat de știre lui David și a zis: „Inima*Vers. 6.Jud. 9:3. oamenilor lui Israel s-a întors spre Absalom." 14 Și David a zis tuturor slujitorilor lui care erau cu el la Ierusalim: „Sculați-vă să fugim*Cap. 19:9. Ps. 3, titlu., căci nu vom scăpa dinaintea lui Absalom. Grăbiți-vă de plecare, altfel, nu va întârzia să ne ajungă și va arunca nenorocirea peste noi și va trece cetatea prin ascuțișul sabiei." 15 Slujitorii împăratului i-au zis: „Slujitorii tăi vor face tot ce va voi domnul nostru, împăratul." 16 Împăratul*Ps. 3, titlu. a ieșit, și toată casa lui mergea după el, și a lăsat zece*Cap. 16:21,22. țiitoare pentru paza casei. 17 Împăratul a ieșit astfel și tot poporul îl urma. Și s-au oprit la cea din urmă casă. 18 Toți slujitorii lui, toți cheretiții*Cap. 8:18. și toți peletiții au trecut alături de el și toți gatiții, în număr de șase sute de oameni, veniți din Gat după el, au trecut înaintea împăratului. 19 Împăratul a zis lui Itai*Cap. 18:2. din Gat: „Pentru ce să vii și tu cu noi? Întoarce-te și rămâi cu împăratul, căci ești străin și ai fost luat chiar din țara ta. 20 De ieri ai venit, și azi să te fac să rătăcești cu noi încoace și încolo, când nici eu însumi nu știu unde*1 Sam. 23:13. mă duc! Întoarce-te și ia și pe frații tăi cu tine. Domnul să se poarte cu tine cu bunătate și credincioșie!" 21 Itai a răspuns împăratului și a zis: „Viu*Rut 1:16,17.Prov. 17:17;18:24. este Domnul și viu este domnul meu, împăratul, că în locul unde va fi domnul meu, împăratul, fie ca să moară, fie ca să trăiască, acolo va fi și robul tău." 22 David a zis atunci lui Itai: „Du-te și treci!" Și Itai din Gat a trecut înainte, cu toți oamenii lui și toți copiii care erau cu el. 23 Tot ținutul plângea și scotea țipete mari la trecerea întregului popor. Împăratul a trecut apoi și el pârâul Chedron și tot poporul a apucat pe drumul care duce în*Cap. 16:2. pustie. 24 Țadoc era și el acolo și, cu el, toți leviții, ducând*Num. 4:15. chivotul legământului lui Dumnezeu, și au așezat jos chivotul lui Dumnezeu, și Abiatar se suia, în timp ce tot poporul isprăvea de ieșit din cetate. 25 Împăratul a zis lui Țadoc: „Du chivotul lui Dumnezeu înapoi în cetate. Dacă voi căpăta trecere înaintea Domnului, mă va aduce înapoi*Ps. 43:3. și mă va face să văd chivotul și locașul lui. 26 Dar dacă va zice: ‘Nu-mi place*Num. 14:8. Cap. 22:20.1 Împ. 10:9.2 Cron. 9:8.Is. 62:4. de tine’, iată-mă, să facă ce va crede cu*1 Sam. 3:18. mine." 27 Împăratul a mai zis preotului Țadoc: „Înțelegi? Întoarce-te*1 Sam. 9:9. în pace în cetate, cu fiul tău Ahimaaț și cu Ionatan, fiul lui Abiatar, cei doi fii*Cap. 17:17. ai voștri. 28 Vedeți, voi aștepta*Cap. 17:16. în câmpiile pustiei până ce-mi vor veni vești din partea voastră." 29 Astfel, Țadoc și Abiatar au dus înapoi chivotul lui Dumnezeu la Ierusalim și au rămas acolo. 30 David a suit Dealul Măslinilor. Suia plângând și cu capul*Cap. 9:4.Est. 6:12. acoperit și mergea cu picioarele goale*Is. 20:2,4., și toți cei ce erau cu el și-au acoperit*Ier. 14:3,4. și ei capul și suiau plângând*Ps. 126:6.. 31 Au venit și au spus lui David: „Ahitofel*Ps. 3:1,2;55:12. este împreună cu Absalom printre uneltitori." Și David a zis: „Doamne, nimicește*Cap. 16:23;17:14,23. sfaturile lui Ahitofel!" 32 Când a ajuns David pe vârf, unde s-a închinat înaintea lui Dumnezeu, iată că Hușai, Architul, a venit înaintea lui, cu haina sfâșiată*Cap. 1:2. și capul acoperit cu țărână. 33 David i-a zis: „Dacă vei veni cu mine, îmi vei fi o*Cap. 19:35. povară. 34 Dimpotrivă, vei nimici pentru mine sfaturile lui Ahitofel dacă te vei întoarce în cetate și vei zice lui Absalom: ‘Împărate, eu voi fi robul*Cap. 16:19. tău; odinioară am fost robul tatălui tău, dar acum sunt robul tău.’ 35 Preoții Țadoc și Abiatar nu vor fi acolo cu tine? Tot ce vei afla din casa împăratului spune*Cap. 17:15,16. preoților Țadoc și Abiatar. 36 Și fiindcă ei au acolo la*Vers. 27. ei pe cei doi fii ai lor, pe Ahimaaț, fiul lui Țadoc, și pe Ionatan, fiul lui Abiatar, prin ei îmi veți trimite tot ce veți afla." 37 Hușai, prietenul*Cap. 16:16.1 Cron. 27:33. lui David, s-a întors dar în cetate. Și Absalom*Cap. 16:15. a intrat în Ierusalim.
