1 And there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David inquired of Jehovah. And Jehovah said, It is for Saul, and for his house of blood, because he slew the Gibeonites. 2 And the king called the Gibeonites, and spoke to them. (Now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remainder of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn to them; and Saul sought to smite them in his zeal for the children of Israel and Judah.) 3 And David said to the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and with what shall I make atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of Jehovah? 4 And the Gibeonites said to him, As to Saul and his house, it is with us no question of receiving silver or gold, neither is it for us to have any man put to death in Israel. And he said, What ye say will I do for you. 5 And they said to the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised against us that we should be destroyed from remaining in all the borders of Israel, 6 let seven men of his sons be given up to us, and we will hang them up to Jehovah in Gibeah of Saul, the chosen of Jehovah. And the king said, I will give them. 7 But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of Jehovah’s oath that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul. 8 And the king took the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom she had borne to Saul, Armoni and Mephibosheth; and the five sons of the sister of Michal the daughter of Saul, whom she had borne to Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite; 9 and he gave them into the hands of the Gibeonites, and they hanged them on the hill before Jehovah. And they fell all seven together, and were put to death in the first days of the harvest, in the beginning of barley harvest.

10 Then Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water poured on them out of the heavens, and suffered neither the fowl of the heavens to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night. 11 And it was told David what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done. 12 And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabesh-Gilead, who had stolen them from the open place of Beth-shan, where the Philistines had hanged them, the day the Philistines had smitten Saul in Gilboa; 13 and he brought up from thence the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son; and they gathered the bones of them that were hanged. 14 And they buried them with the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son in the country of Benjamin in Zela, in the sepulchre of Kish his father; and they did all that the king had commanded. And afterwards God*GodHebrew: Elohim was propitious to the land.

15 And the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought with the Philistines. And David was exhausted. 16 And Ishbibenob, who was of the children of Raphah — the weight of his lance was three hundred shekels of bronze, and he was girded with new armour — thought to smite David. 17 And Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the lamp of Israel. 18 And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines, at Gob; then Sibbechai the Hushathite smote Saph, who was of the children of Raphah. 19 And there was again a battle at Gob with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, a Bethlehemite, smote Goliath the Gittite; now the shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam. 20 And there was again a battle, at Gath; and there was a man there of great stature, that had on each hand six fingers, and on each foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to Raphah. 21 And he defied Israel; but Jonathan the son of Shimea David’s brother smote him. 22 These four were born to Raphah, in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.

Domnului?" 4 Gabaoniții i-au răspuns: „Nu voim nici argint, nici aur de la Saul și de la casa lui și nici nu este treaba noastră să omorâm pe cineva din Israel." Și împăratul a zis: „Ce voiți dar să vă fac?" 5 Ei au răspuns împăratului: „Fiindcă omul acela ne-a slăbit și își pusese de gând să ne nimicească, pentru ca să ne facă să pierim din tot ținutul lui Israel, 6 să ni se dea șapte bărbați din fiii lui și-i vom spânzura înaintea Domnului, la Ghibea*1 Sam. 10:26;11:4. lui Saul, alesul*1 Sam. 10:24. Domnului." Și împăratul a zis: „Vi-i voi da." 7 Împăratul a cruțat pe Mefiboșet, fiul lui Ionatan, fiul lui Saul, pentru jurământul*1 Sam. 18:3;20:8,15,42;23:18. pe care-l făcuseră între ei, înaintea Domnului, David și Ionatan, fiul lui Saul. 8 Dar împăratul a luat pe cei doi fii pe care-i născuse lui Saul Rițpa*Cap. 3:7., fata lui Aiia, și anume: Armoni și Mefiboșet, și pe cei cinci fii pe care-i născuse Merab, fata lui Saul, lui Adriel din Mehola, fiul lui Barzilai; 9 i-a dat în mâinile gabaoniților, care i-au spânzurat pe munte, înaintea*Cap. 6:17. Domnului. Toți cei șapte au pierit împreună; au fost omorâți în cele dintâi zile ale seceratului, la începutul seceratului orzurilor. 10 Rițpa*Cap. 3:7. Vers. 8., fata lui Aiia, a luat un sac și l-a întins sub ea, peste stâncă, de la începutul*Deut. 21:23. seceratului până când a căzut peste ei ploaie din cer, și a oprit păsările cerului să se apropie de ei în timpul zilei și fiarele câmpului, în timpul nopții. 11 Au înștiințat pe David despre ce făcuse Rițpa, fata lui Aiia, țiitoarea lui Saul. 12 Și David s-a dus și a luat oasele lui Saul și oasele fiului său Ionatan de la locuitorii din Iabesul Galaadului*1 Sam. 31:11-13., care le luaseră din piața Bet-Șan, unde îi spânzuraseră filistenii*1 Sam. 31:10. când au bătut pe Saul la Ghilboa. 13 A luat de acolo oasele lui Saul și oasele fiului său Ionatan și s-au strâns și oasele celor ce fuseseră spânzurați. 14 Au îngropat oasele lui Saul și ale fiului său Ionatan în țara lui Beniamin, la Țela*Ios. 18:28., în mormântul lui Chis, tatăl lui Saul. Și au făcut tot ce poruncise împăratul.

După aceea, Dumnezeu*Ios. 7:26. Cap. 24:25. a fost potolit față de țară.

15 Filistenii au pornit iarăși cu război împotriva lui Israel. David s-a coborât cu slujitorii lui și a luptat împotriva filistenilor. David era obosit. 16 Și Ișbi-Benob, unul din copiii lui Rafa, a voit să omoare pe David; avea o suliță în greutate de trei sute de sicli de aramă și era încins cu o sabie nouă. 17 Abișai, fiul Țeruiei, a venit în ajutorul lui David, a lovit pe filistean și l-a omorât. Atunci, oamenii lui David i-au jurat zicând: „Să*Cap. 18:3. nu mai ieși cu noi la luptă, ca să nu stingi lumina*1 Împ. 11:36;15:4.Ps. 132:17. lui Israel." 18 După aceea, a mai fost*1 Cron. 20:4. o bătălie la Gob cu filistenii. Atunci, Sibecai*1 Cron. 11:29., Hușatitul, a omorât pe Saf, care era unul din copiii lui Rafa. 19 A mai fost o bătălie la Gob cu filistenii. Și Elhanan, fiul lui Iaare-Oreghim din Betleem, a omorât pe Goliat*1 Cron. 20:5. din Gat, care avea o suliță al cărei mâner era ca sulul de țesut. 20 A mai fost o bătălie la Gat*1 Cron. 20:6.. Acolo era un om de statură înaltă, care avea șase degete la fiecare mână și la fiecare picior, în total douăzeci și patru, și care se trăgea tot din Rafa. 21 El a batjocorit pe Israel, și Ionatan, fiul lui Șimea*1 Sam. 16:9., fratele lui David, l-a omorât. 22 Acești patru*1 Cron. 20:8. oameni erau copiii lui Rafa născuți la Gat. Au pierit uciși de mâna lui David și de mâna slujitorilor lui.
