1 And it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, that David abode two days in Ziklag. 2 And it came to pass on the third day, that behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his garments rent, and earth upon his head; and as soon as he came to David, he fell to the earth and did obeisance. 3 And David said to him, Whence comest thou? And he said to him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped. 4 And David said to him, What has taken place? I pray thee, tell me. And he said that the people had fled from the battle, and many of the people also had fallen and died, and that Saul and Jonathan his son were dead also. 5 And David said to the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead? 6 And the young man that told him said, I happened by chance to be upon mount Gilboa, and behold, Saul leaned on his spear; and behold, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him. 7 And he looked behind him, and saw me, and called to me. And I said, Here am I. 8 And he said to me, Who art thou? And I said to him, I am an Amalekite. 9 He said to me again, Stand, I pray thee, over me, and slay me; for anguish has seized me; for my life is yet whole in me. 10 So I stood over him, and put him to death, for I knew that he would not live after his fall; and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither to my lord.

11 Then David took hold of his garments and rent them; and all the men that were with him did likewise. 12 And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Jehovah, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword. 13 And David said to the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he said, I am the son of an Amalekite stranger. 14 And David said to him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thy hand to destroy Jehovah’s anointed? 15 Then David called one of the young men and said, Draw near, and fall on him. And he smote him that he died. 16 And David said to him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth has testified against thee, saying, I have slain Jehovah’s anointed.

17 And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son; 18 and he bade them teach the children of Judah the song of the bow. Behold, it is written in the book of Jasher: — 19 The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen! 20 Tell it not in Gath, carry not the tidings in the streets of Ashkelon; Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph. 21 Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, no rain upon you, nor fields of heave-offerings! For there the shield of the mighty was vilely cast away, The shield of Saul, as not anointed with oil. 22 From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, The bow of Jonathan turned not back, And the sword of Saul returned not empty. 23 Saul and Jonathan, beloved and pleasant in their lives, Even in their death were not divided; They were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions. 24 Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet with splendour, Who put ornaments of gold upon your apparel. 25 How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan is slain upon thy high places. 26 I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant wast thou unto me; Thy love to me was wonderful, passing women’s love. 27 How are the mighty fallen, and the instruments of war perished!

Când a ajuns în fața lui David, s-a aruncat cu fața la pământ și s-a închinat. 3 David i-a zis: „De unde vii?" Și el i-a răspuns: „Am scăpat din tabăra lui Israel." 4 David i-a zis: „Spune-mi ce s-a întâmplat?" Și el a răspuns: „Poporul a fugit de pe câmpul de bătaie și un mare număr de oameni au căzut și au pierit; chiar și Saul și fiul său Ionatan au murit." 5 David a zis tânărului care-i aducea aceste vești: „De unde știi că Saul și fiul său Ionatan au murit?" 6 Și tânărul care-i aducea aceste vești a răspuns: „Am venit din întâmplare pe muntele Ghilboa*1 Sam. 31:1. și Saul*1 Sam. 31:2-4. stătea rezemat în sulița lui, și carele și călăreții erau aproape să-l ajungă. 7 Întorcându-se, m-a văzut și m-a chemat. Eu am zis: ‘Iată-mă!’ 8 Și el mi-a zis: ‘Cine ești?’ I-am răspuns: ‘Eu sunt amalecit.’ 9 Și a zis: ‘Apropie-te dar și omoară-mă, căci m-a apucat amețeala, măcar că sunt încă plin de viață.’ 10 M-am apropiat de el și l-am omorât*Jud. 9:54., știind bine că n-avea să mai rămână cu viață în urma înfrângerii. Am luat cununa împărătească de pe capul lui și brățara pe care o avea la braț și le-am adus aici, domnului meu." 11 David și-a apucat hainele și le-a sfâșiat*Cap. 3:31;13:31. și toți oamenii care erau lângă el au făcut același lucru. 12 Au jelit, au plâns și au postit până seara de durere pentru Saul, pentru fiul său Ionatan, pentru poporul Domnului, fiindcă fuseseră tăiați cu sabia. 13 David a zis tânărului care-i adusese aceste vești: „De unde ești?" Și el a răspuns: „Sunt fiul unui străin, al unui amalecit." 14 David i-a zis: „Cum*Num. 12:8. nu ți-a fost frică*1 Sam. 31:4. să pui mâna*1 Sam. 24:6;26:9.Ps. 105:15. pe unsul Domnului și să-l omori?" 15 Și David*Cap. 4:10,12. a chemat pe unul din oamenii lui și a zis: „Apropie-te și omoară-l!" Omul acela a lovit pe amalecit, care a murit. 16 Și David i-a zis: „Sângele*1 Sam. 26:9.1 Împ. 2:32,33,37. tău să cadă asupra capului tău, căci gura*Vers. 10.Luca 19:22. ta a mărturisit împotriva ta, fiindcă ai zis: ‘Am omorât pe unsul Domnului!’"

17 Iată cântarea de jale pe care a alcătuit-o David pentru Saul și fiul său Ionatan 18 și pe care a poruncit s-o învețe copiii lui Iuda. Este numită Cântarea Arcului și se află scrisă în Cartea*Ios. 10:13.Dreptului.

19 „Fala ta, Israele, zace ucisă pe dealurile tale!

Cum*Vers. 27. au căzut vitejii!

20 Nu*1 Sam. 31:9.Mica 1:10.Jud. 16:23. spuneți lucrul acesta în Gat, nu răspândiți vestea aceasta în ulițele Ascalonului,

ca să nu se bucure fetele*Exod 15:20.Jud. 11:34.1 Sam. 18:6. filistenilor,

ca să nu se laude fetelor celor netăiați*1 Sam. 31:4. împrejur.

21 Munți*1 Sam. 31:1. din Ghilboa! Nici rouă*Jud. 5:23.Iov 3:3,4.Ier. 20:14., nici ploaie să nu cadă pe voi!

Să nu fie pe voi nici câmpii care să dea pârgă pentru darurile de mâncare!

Căci acolo au fost aruncate scuturile vitejilor,

scutul lui Saul, ca și când n-ar fi fost uns*1 Sam. 10:1. cu untdelemn.

22 De la sângele celor răniți,

de la grăsimea celor mai voinici,

arcul*1 Sam. 18:4. lui Ionatan nu dădea înapoi niciodată

și sabia lui Saul nu se învârtea niciodată în vânt.

23 Saul și Ionatan, care s-au plăcut și s-au iubit în timpul vieții lor,

n-au fost despărțiți nici la moarte;

erau mai ușori decât vulturii,

mai tari*Jud. 14:18. decât leii.

24 Fiicele lui Israel, plângeți pe Saul, care vă îmbrăca în stacojiu și alte podoabe,

care vă punea găteli de aur pe hainele voastre!

25 Cum au căzut vitejii în mijlocul luptei!

Cum a murit Ionatan pe dealurile tale!

26 Mă doare după tine, frate Ionatane!

Tu erai plăcerea mea;

dragostea ta pentru mine era minunată,

mai presus de dragostea*1 Sam. 18:1,3;19:2;20:17,41;23:16. femeiască.

27 Cum*Vers. 19. au căzut vitejii! Cum li s-au pierdut armele!"
