1 Vejam! O Senhor vai arrasar a terra e devastá-la; arruinará sua superfície e espalhará seus habitantes.2 Será o mesmo para o sacerdote e o povo, para o senhor e o servo, para a senhora e a serva, para o vendedor e o comprador, para quem toma emprestado e quem empresta, para o devedor e o credor.3 A terra será completamente arrasada e totalmente saqueada. Quem falou esta palavra foi o Senhor.4 A terra seca-se e murcha, o mundo definha e murcha, definham os nobres da terra.5 A terra está contaminada pelos seus habitantes, porque desobedeceram às leis, violaram os decretos e quebraram a aliança eterna.6 Por isso a maldição consome a terra, e seu povo é culpado. Por isso os habitantes da terra são consumidos pelo fogo, ao ponto de sobrarem pouquíssimos.7 O vinho novo vai-se, e a videira murcha; todos os que se divertiam gemem.8 O som festivo dos tamborins foi silenciado, o barulho dos que se alegram parou, a harpa cheia de júbilo está muda.9 Já não bebem vinho entoando canções; a bebida fermentada é amarga para os que a bebem.10 A cidade vã está em ruínas; a entrada de cada casa está fechada.11 Nas ruas clamam por vinho; toda a alegria chegou ao fim, toda celebração foi eliminada da terra.12 A cidade foi deixada em ruínas, sua porta feita em pedaços.13 Assim será na terra, entre as nações, como quando se usa a vara na oliveira ou se buscam os restos das uvas após a colheita.14 Erguem as vozes, cantam de alegria; desde o Ocidente aclamam a majestade do Senhor.15 Dêem glória, pois, ao Senhor no Oriente, e nas ilhas do mar exaltem o nome do Senhor, o Deus de Israel.16 Desde os confins da terra ouvimos cantarem: "Glória seja dada ao Justo! " Mas eu disse: "Que desgraça! Que desgraça! Ai de mim! Os traidores traem! Os traidores agem traiçoeiramente! "17 Pavor, cova e laço o aguardam, ó habitantes da terra!18 Quem fugir ao grito de terror cairá na cova; quem sair da cova será pego no laço. Abertas estão as comportas dos céus; tremem os alicerces da terra.19 A terra foi despedaçada, está destruída, totalmente abalada!20 A terra cambaleia como um bêbado, balança como uma cabana ao vento; tão pesada sobre ela é a culpa de sua rebelião que cai para nunca mais se levantar!21 Naquele dia o Senhor castigará os poderes em cima nos céus e os reis em baixo na terra.22 Eles serão arrebanhados como prisioneiros numa masmorra, trancados numa prisão e castigados depois de muitos dias.23 A lua ficará humilhada, e o sol, envergonhado; pois o Senhor dos Exércitos reinará no monte Sião e em Jerusalém, glorioso na presença dos seus líderes!

1 Look, Yahweh makes the earth empty, and makes it waste, and turns it upside down, and scatters abroad its inhabitants.2 And it will be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the male slave, so with his master; as with the female slave, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the creditor, so with the debtor; as with the taker of interest, so with the giver of interest to him.3 The earth will be completely emptied, and completely laid waste; for Yahweh has spoken this word.4 The earth mourns and fades away, the world languishes and fades away, the lofty people of the earth languish.5 The earth also is polluted under its inhabitants; because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant.6 Therefore the curse has devoured the earth, and those who dwell in it are found guilty: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few of common man are left.7 The new wine mourns, the vine languishes, all the merry-hearted sigh.8 The mirth of tabrets ceases, the noise of those who rejoice ends, the joy of the harp ceases.9 They will not drink wine with a song; strong drink will be bitter to those who drink it.10 The waste city is broken down; every house is shut up, that no man may come in.11 There is a crying in the streets because of the wine; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone.12 In the city is left desolation, and the gate is struck with destruction.13 For thus it will be in the midst of the earth among the peoples, as the shaking of an olive-tree, as the gleanings when the vintage is done.14 These will lift up their voice, they will shout; for the majesty of Yahweh they cry aloud from the sea.15 Therefore glorify{+} Yahweh in the east, even the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel, in the isles of the sea.16 From the uttermost part of the earth we have heard songs: Glory to the righteous. But I said, I pine away, I pine away, woe is me! The betrayers have betrayed; yes, the betrayers have totally betrayed.17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are on you, O inhabitant of the earth.18 And it will come to pass, that he who flees from the noise of the fear will fall into the pit; and he who comes up out of the midst of the pit will be taken in the snare: for the windows on high are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble.19 The earth is completely broken, the earth is rent apart, the earth is shaken violently.20 The earth will stagger like a drunk man, and will sway to and fro like a hammock; and its transgression will be heavy on it, and it will fall, and not rise again.21 And it will come to pass in that day, that Yahweh will punish the host of the high ones on high, and the kings of the earth on the earth.22 And they will be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and will be shut up in the prison; and after many days they will be visited.23 Then the moon will be confounded, and the sun ashamed; for Yahweh of hosts will reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem; and before his elders will be glory.
