1 Ai daquela coroa, orgulho dos bêbados de Efraim, e de sua magnífica beleza, situada nos altos de um vale fértil e que agora é como uma flor murcha, Ai dos que são dominados pelo vinho!2 Vejam! O Senhor envia alguém que é poderoso e forte. Como chuva de granizo e vento destruidor, como violento aguaceiro e tromba d’água inundante, ele a lançará com força ao chão.3 A coroa orgulhosa dos bêbados de Efraim será pisoteada.4 Sua magnífica beleza, localizada na cabeça de um vale fértil, é agora uma flor que murcha. Ela será como figo maduro antes da colheita, quem o vê, logo o apanha e o come.5 Naquele dia o Senhor dos Exércitos será uma coroa gloriosa, um belo diadema para o remanescente do seu povo.6 Ele será um espírito de justiça para aquele que se assenta para julgar, e força para os que fazem recuar das portas a guerra.7 E estes também cambaleiam pelo efeito do vinho, e não ficam de pé por causa da bebida fermentada: Os sacerdotes e os profetas cambaleiam por causa da bebida fermentada e estão desorientados devido ao vinho; eles não conseguem ficar de pé por causa da bebida fermentada, confundem-se quando têm visões, tropeçam quando devem dar um veredicto.8 Todas as mesas estão cobertas de vômito e não há um só lugar limpo.9 "Quem é que ele está tentando ensinar? A quem está explicando a sua mensagem? A crianças desmamadas e a bebês recém-tirados do seio materno?10 Pois o que se diz é: ‘Ordem sobre ordem, ordem sobre ordem, regra e mais regra, regra e mais regra; um pouco aqui, um pouco ali’. "11 Pois bem, com lábios trôpegos e língua estranha Deus falará a este povo,12 ao qual dissera: "Este é o lugar de descanso. Deixem descansar o exausto. Este é o lugar de repouso! " Mas eles não quiseram ouvir.13 Por isso o Senhor lhes dirá: "Ordem sobre ordem, ordem sobre ordem, regra e mais regra, regra e mais regra; um pouco aqui, um pouco ali", para que saiam, caiam de costas, firam-se, fiquem presos no laço e sejam capturados.14 Portanto, ouçam a palavra do Senhor, zombadores, vocês, que dominam este povo em Jerusalém.15 Vocês se vangloriam, dizendo: "Fizemos um pacto com a morte, com a sepultura fizemos um acordo. Quando vier a calamidade destruidora, não nos atingirá, pois da mentira fizemos o nosso refúgio e na falsidade temos o nosso esconderijo".16 Por isso diz o Soberano Senhor: "Eis que ponho em Sião uma pedra, uma pedra já experimentada, uma preciosa pedra angular para alicerce seguro; aquele que confia, jamais será abalado.17 Farei do juízo a linha de medir e da justiça o fio de prumo; o granizo varrerá o seu falso refúgio, e as águas inundarão o seu abrigo.18 Seu pacto com a morte será anulado; seu acordo com a sepultura não subsistirá. Quando vier a calamidade destruidora, vocês serão arrastados por ela.19 Todas as vezes que vier, os arrastará; passará manhã após manhã, de dia e de noite". A compreensão desta mensagem trará pavor total.20 A cama é curta demais para alguém deitar-se, e o cobertor é estreito demais para cobrir-se.21 O Senhor se levantará como fez no monte Perazim, mostrará sua ira como no vale de Gibeom, para realizar sua obra, obra muito estranha, e cumprir sua tarefa, tarefa misteriosa.22 Agora, parem com a zombaria; caso contrário, as suas correntes ficarão mais pesadas; o Senhor, o Senhor dos Exércitos falou-me da destruição decretada contra o território inteiro.23 Ouçam, escutem a minha voz; prestem atenção, ouçam o que eu digo.24 Quando o agricultor ara a terra para o plantio, só faz isso o tempo todo? Só fica abrindo sulcos e gradeando o solo?25 Depois de nivelado o solo, ele não semeia o endro e não espalha as sementes do cominho? Não planta o trigo no lugar certo, a cevada no terreno próprio e o trigo duro nas bordas?26 O seu Deus o instrui e lhe ensina o caminho.27 Não se debulha o endro com trilhadeira, e sobre o cominho não se faz passar roda de carro; tira-se o endro com vara, e o cominho com um pedaço de pau.28 É preciso moer o cereal para fazer pão; por isso ninguém o fica trilhando para sempre. Fazem passar as rodas da trilhadeira sobre o trigo, mas os seus cavalos não o trituram.29 Isso tudo vem da parte do Senhor dos Exércitos, maravilhoso em conselhos e magnífico em sabedoria.

1 Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley of those who are overcome with wine!2 Look, the Lord has a mighty and strong one; as a tempest of hail, a destroying storm, as a tempest of mighty waters overflowing, he will cast down to the earth with the hand.3 The crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim will be trodden under foot:4 and the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, will be as the first-ripe fig before the summer; which when he who looks on it sees, while it is yet in his hand he eats it up.5 In that day will Yahweh of hosts become a crown of glory, and a diadem of beauty, to the residue of his people;6 and a spirit of justice to him who sits in judgment, and strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate.7 And even these reel with wine, and stagger with strong drink; the priest and the prophet reel with strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they stagger with strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.8 For all tables are full of vomit [and] filthiness, [so that there is] no place [clean].9 Whom will he teach knowledge? And whom will he make to understand the message? Those who are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts?10 For it is precept on precept, precept on precept; line on line, line on line; here a little, there a little.11 No, but by [men of] strange lips and with another tongue he will speak to this people;12 to whom he said, This is the rest, give{+} rest to him who is weary; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.13 Therefore will the word of Yahweh be to them precept on precept, precept on precept; line on line, line on line; here a little, there a little; that they may go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.14 Therefore hear the word of Yahweh, you{+} scoffers, that rule this people who is in Jerusalem:15 Because you{+} have said, We have made a covenant with death, and we are at agreement with Sheol; when the overflowing scourge will pass through, it will not come to us; for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood we have hid ourselves:16 therefore thus says the Sovereign Yahweh, Look, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner-[stone] of sure foundation: he who believes will not be caused to flee.17 And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plummet; and the hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters will overflow the hiding-place.18 And your{+} covenant with death will be annulled, and your{+} agreement with Sheol will not stand; when the overflowing scourge will pass through, then you{+} will be trodden down by it.19 As often as it passes through, it will take you{+}; for morning by morning it will pass through, by day and by night: and it will be nothing but terror to understand the message.20 For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it; and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.21 For Yahweh will rise up as in mount Perazim, he will be angry as in the valley of Gibeon; that he may do his work, his strange work, and bring to pass his act, his strange act.22 Now therefore don't be{+} scoffers, or else your{+} bonds will be made strong; for a decree of destruction I have heard from the Lord, Yahweh of hosts, on the whole earth.23 Give{+} ear, and hear my voice; listen, and hear my speech.24 Does he who plows to sow plow continually? Does he [continually] open and harrow his ground?25 When he has leveled its face, does he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cumin, and put in the wheat in rows, and the barley in the appointed place, and the spelt in its border?26 For his God instructs him aright, [and] teaches him.27 For the fitches are not threshed with a sharp [threshing] instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about on the cumin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cumin with a rod.28 Bread [grain] is ground; for he will not always be threshing it: and though the wheel of his cart and his horses scatter it, he does not grind it.29 This also comes forth from Yahweh of hosts, who is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in wisdom.
