1 "Ai dos filhos obstinados", declara o Senhor, "que executam planos que não são meus, fazem acordo sem minha aprovação, para ajuntar pecado sobre pecado,2 que descem ao Egito sem consultar-me, para buscar proteção no poder do faraó, e refúgio na sombra do Egito.3 Mas a proteção do faraó lhes trará vergonha, e a sombra do Egito lhe causará humilhação.4 Embora seus líderes tenham ido à Zoa e seus enviados tenham chegado a Hanes,5 todos se envergonharão por causa de um povo que lhes é inútil, que não traz ajuda nem vantagem, mas apenas vergonha e zombaria. "6 Advertência contra os animais do Neguebe: Atravessando uma terra hostil e severa, de leões e leoas, de víboras e serpentes velozes, os enviados transportam suas riquezas no lombo de jumentos, seus tesouros nas corcovas de camelos, para aquela nação inútil,7 o Egito, cujo socorro é totalmente inútil. Por isso eu o chamo Raabe, fera que nada faz.8 Agora vá, escreva isso numa tabuinha para eles, registre-o num livro, para que nos dias vindouros seja um testemunho eterno.9 Esse povo é rebelde; são filhos mentirosos, filhos que não querem saber da instrução do Senhor.10 Eles dizem aos videntes: "Não tenham mais visões! " e aos profetas: "Não nos revelem o que é certo! Falem-nos coisas agradáveis, profetizem ilusões.11 Deixem esse caminho, abandonem essa vereda, e parem de confrontar-nos com o Santo de Israel! "12 Por isso diz o Santo de Israel: "Como vocês rejeitaram esta mensagem, apelaram para a opressão e confiaram nos perversos,13 este pecado será para vocês como um muro alto, rachado e torto, que de repente desaba, inesperadamente.14 Ele o fará em pedaços como um vaso de barro, tão esmigalhado que entre os seus pedaços não se achará um caco que sirva para pegar brasas de uma lareira ou para tirar água da cisterna".15 Diz o Soberano Senhor, o Santo de Israel: "No arrependimento e no descanso está a salvação de vocês, na quietude e na confiança está o seu vigor, mas vocês não quiseram.16 Vocês disseram: ‘Não, nós vamos fugir a cavalo’. E fugirão! Vocês disseram: ‘Cavalgaremos cavalos velozes’. Velozes serão os seus perseguidores!17 Mil fugirão diante da ameaça de um; diante da ameaça de cinco todos vocês fugirão, até que vocês sejam deixados como um mastro no alto de um monte, como uma bandeira numa colina".18 Contudo, o Senhor espera o momento de ser bondoso com vocês; ele ainda se levantará para mostrar-lhes compaixão. Pois o Senhor é Deus de justiça. Como são felizes todos os que nele esperam!19 Ó povo de Sião, que mora em Jerusalém, você não vai chorar mais. Como ele será bondoso quando você clamar por socorro! Assim que ele ouvir, lhe responderá.20 Embora o Senhor lhe dê o pão da adversidade e a água da aflição, o seu mestre não se esconderá mais; com seus próprios olhos vocês o verão.21 Quer você se volte para a direita quer para a esquerda, uma voz atrás de você lhe dirá: "Este é o caminho; siga-o".22 Então você tratará como impuras as suas imagens revestidas de prata e os seus ídolos recobertos de ouro; você os jogará fora como um trapo imundo e lhes dirá: "Fora! "23 Ele também lhe mandará chuva para a semente que você semear, e a terra dará alimento rico e farto. Naquele dia o seu gado pastará em grandes prados.24 Os bois e os jumentos que lavram o solo comerão forragem e sal espalhados com forcado e pá.25 No dia do grande massacre, quando caírem as torres, regatos de água fluirão sobre todo monte elevado e sobre toda colina altaneira.26 A luz da lua brilhará como o sol, e a luz do sol será sete vezes mais brilhante, como a luz de sete dias completos, quando o Senhor cuidar das contusões do seu povo e curar as feridas que lhe causou.27 Vejam! De longe vem o Nome do Senhor, com sua ira em chamas, e densas nuvens de fumaça; seus lábios estão cheios de ira, e sua língua é fogo consumidor.28 Seu sopro é como uma torrente impetuosa, que sobe até o pescoço. Ele faz sacudir as nações na peneira da destruição; ele coloca na boca dos povos um freio que os desencaminha.29 E vocês cantarão como em noite de festa sagrada; seus corações se regozijarão como quando se vai, ao som da flauta, ao monte do Senhor, à Rocha de Israel.30 O Senhor fará que os homens ouçam sua voz majestosa e os levará a ver seu braço descendo com ira impetuosa e fogo consumidor, com aguaceiro, tempestades de raios e saraiva.31 A voz do Senhor despedaçará a Assíria; com seu cetro a ferirá.32 Cada pancada que com a vara o Senhor desferir para a castigar será dada ao som de tamborins e harpas, enquanto a estiver combatendo com os golpes do seu braço.33 Tofete está pronta já faz tempo; foi preparada para o rei. Sua fogueira é funda e larga, com muita lenha e muito fogo; o sopro do Senhor, como uma torrente de enxofre ardente, a incendeia.

1 Woe to the rebellious sons, says Yahweh, that take counsel, but not of me; and that make a league, but not of my Spirit, that they may add sin to sin,2 that set out to go down into Egypt, and haven't asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to take refuge in the shadow of Egypt!3 Therefore will the strength of Pharaoh be your{+} shame, and the refuge in the shadow of Egypt your{+} confusion.4 For their princes are at Zoan, and their ambassadors have come to Hanes.5 They will all be ashamed because of a people who can't profit them, who are not a help nor profit, but a shame, and also a reproach.6 The burden of the beasts of the South. Through the land of trouble and anguish, from where come the lioness and the lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they carry their riches on the shoulders of young donkeys, and their treasures on the humps of camels, to a people who will not profit [them].7 For Egypt helps in vain, and to no purpose: therefore I have called her Rahab that sits still.8 Now go, write it before them on a tablet, and inscribe it in a book, that it may be for the time to come forever and ever.9 For it is a rebellious people, lying sons, sons who will not hear the law of Yahweh;10 that say to the seers, Don't see; and to the prophets, Don't prophesy to us right things, speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits,11 get{+} out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.12 Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel, Because you{+} despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and rely on them;13 therefore this iniquity will be to you{+} as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking comes suddenly in an instant.14 And he will break it as a potter's vessel is broken, breaking it in pieces without sparing; so that there will not be found among its pieces a sherd with which to take fire from the hearth, or to dip up water out of the cistern.15 For thus said the Sovereign Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel, In returning and rest you{+} will be saved; in quietness and in confidence will be your{+} strength. And you{+} would not:16 but you{+} said, No, for we will flee on horses; therefore you{+} will flee: and, We will ride on the swift; therefore those who pursue you{+} will be swift.17 A thousand together [will flee] at the threat of one; at the threat of five you{+} will flee: until you{+} are left as a beacon on the top of a mountain, and as an ensign on a hill.18 And therefore Yahweh will wait, that he may be gracious to you{+}; and therefore he will be exalted, that he may have mercy on you{+}: for Yahweh is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him.19 For the people will dwell in Zion at Jerusalem; you will weep no more; he will surely be gracious to you at the voice of your cry; when he will hear, he will answer you.20 And though the Lord gives you{+} the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your teachers will not be hidden anymore, but your eyes will see your teachers;21 and your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk{+} in it; when you{+} turn to the right hand, and when you{+} turn to the left.22 And you{+} will defile the overlaying of your graven images of silver, and the plating of your molten images of gold: you will cast them away as a menstrual cloth; you will say to it, Get away from here.23 And he will give the rain for your seed, with which you will sow the ground; and bread of the increase of the ground, and it will be fat and plenteous. In that day your cattle will be shepherded in large pastures;24 the oxen likewise and the young donkeys that till the ground will eat savory fodder, which has been winnowed with the shovel and with the fork.25 And there will be on every lofty mountain, and on every high hill, brooks [and] streams of waters, in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall.26 Moreover the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that Yahweh binds up the hurt of his people, and heals the stroke of their wound.27 Look, the name of Yahweh comes from far, burning with his anger, and in thick rising smoke: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue is as a devouring fire;28 and his breath is as an overflowing stream, that reaches even to the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of destruction: and a bridle that causes to err [will be] in the jaws of the peoples.29 You{+} will have a song as in the night when a holy feast is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goes with a pipe to come to the mountain of Yahweh, to the Rock of Israel.30 And Yahweh will cause his glorious voice to be heard, and will show the coming down of his arm, with the indignation of [his] anger, and the flame of a devouring fire, with a blast, and tempest, and hailstones.31 For through the voice of Yahweh will the Assyrian be dismayed; with his rod he will strike [him].32 And every stroke of the appointed staff, which Yahweh will lay on him, will be with [the sound of] tabrets and harps; and in battles with the brandishing [of his arm] he will fight with them.33 For a Topheth is prepared of old; yes, for the king it is made ready; he has made it deep and large; its pile is fire and much wood; the breath of Yahweh, like a stream of brimstone, kindles it.
