1 Vejam! Um rei reinará com retidão, e príncipes governarão com justiça.2 Cada homem será como um esconderijo contra o vento e um abrigo contra a tempestade, como correntes de água numa terra seca e como a sombra de uma grande rocha no deserto.3 Então os olhos dos que vêem não estarão mais fechados, e os ouvidos dos que ouvem escutarão.4 A mente do precipitado saberá julgar, e a língua gaguejante falará com facilidade e clareza.5 O tolo já não será chamado nobre e o homem sem caráter não será tido em alta estima.6 Pois o insensato fala com insensatez e só pensa no mal: Ele pratica a maldade e espalha mentiras sobre o Senhor; deixa o faminto sem nada e priva de água o sedento.7 As artimanhas do homem sem caráter são perversas; ele inventa planos maldosos para destruir com mentiras o pobre, mesmo quando a súplica deste é justa.8 Mas o homem nobre faz planos nobres, e graças aos seus feitos nobres permanece firme.9 Vocês, mulheres tão complacentes, levantem-se e escutem-me! Vocês, filhas que se sentem seguras, ouçam o que lhes vou dizer!10 Daqui a pouco mais de um ano, vocês, que se sentem seguras, ficarão apavoradas; a colheita de uvas falhará, e a colheita de frutas não virá.11 Tremam, vocês, mulheres tranqüilas! Estremeçam, vocês, que se sentem seguras! Arranquem suas vestes, e vistam roupas de lamento na cintura.12 Batam no peito e chorem pelos campos agradáveis, pelas videiras frutíferas13 e pela terra do meu povo, terra infestada de espinhos e roseiras bravas; sim, pranteiem por todas as casas cheias de júbilo e por esta cidade exultante.14 A fortaleza será abandonada, a cidade barulhenta ficará deserta, a cidadela e a torre de sentinela se tornarão covis, uma delícia para os jumentos, uma pastagem para os rebanhos,15 até que sobre nós o Espírito seja derramado do alto, e o deserto se transforme em campo fértil, e o campo fértil pareça uma floresta.16 A justiça habitará no deserto, e a retidão viverá no campo fértil.17 O fruto da justiça será paz; o resultado da justiça será tranqüilidade e confiança para sempre.18 O meu povo viverá em locais pacíficos, em casas seguras, em tranqüilos lugares de descanso,19 mesmo que a saraiva arrase a floresta e a cidade seja nivelada ao pó.20 Como vocês serão felizes, semeando perto das águas, e deixando soltos os bois e os jumentos!

1 Look, a king will reign in righteousness, and princes will rule in justice.2 And a man will be as a hiding-place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest, as streams of water in a dry place, as the shade of a great rock in a weary land.3 And the eyes of those who see will not be dim, and the ears of those who hear will listen.4 And the heart of the rash will understand knowledge, and the tongue of the stammerers will be ready to speak plainly.5 The fool will no more be called noble, nor the churl said to be bountiful.6 For the fool will speak folly, and his heart will work iniquity, to do profaneness, and to utter error against Yahweh, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and to cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.7 And the instruments of the churl are evil: he devises wicked devices to destroy the meek with lying words, even when the needy speaks right.8 But the noble devises noble things; and in noble things he will continue.9 Rise up, you{+} women who are at ease, [and] hear my voice; you{+} careless daughters, give ear to my speech.10 For days beyond a year you{+} will be troubled, you{+} careless women; for the vintage will fail, the ingathering will not come.11 Tremble, you{+} women who are at ease; be troubled, you{+} careless ones; strip{+}, and make yourselves bare, and gird [sackcloth] on your{+} loins.12 They will strike on the breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine.13 On the land of my people thorns and briers will come up; yes, on all the houses of joy in the joyous city.14 For the palace will be forsaken; the populous city will be deserted; the hill and the watchtower will be for dens forever, a joy of wild donkeys, a pasture of flocks;15 until the Spirit is poured on us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is esteemed as a forest.16 Then justice will stay in the wilderness; and righteousness will remain in the fruitful field.17 And the work of righteousness will be peace; and the effect of righteousness, quietness and confidence forever.18 And my people will remain in a peaceable habitation, and in safe dwellings, and in quiet resting-places.19 But it will hail in the downfall of the forest; and the city will be completely laid low.20 Blessed are you{+} who sow beside all waters, who send forth the feet of the ox and the donkey.
