1 Jag hörde honom ropa med hög röst: "Kom hit, ni som ska straffa staden, var och en med sitt förstörelsevapen i handen." 2 *Hes 8:3, Upp 15:1, 6. Då kom sex män från övre porten, den som vetter mot norr, och var och en hade sin stridshammare i handen. Bland dem fanns en man som var klädd i linnekläder och hade ett skrivdon vid höften. De kom och ställde sig vid sidan av koppar­altaret*9:2kopparaltaretTillverkat på Mose tid (2 Mos 38:30, 1 Krön 1:5f) men undanflyttat till förmån för ett utländskt altare (2 Kung 16:14f)..

3 *Hes 1:5f, 10:4, 7, 11:22. Israels Guds härlighet hade lyft sig från keruben som den vilade på och flyttat sig till tempelhusets tröskel, och den ropade nu till mannen som var klädd i linnekläderna och hade skrivdonet vid höften. 4 *2 Mos 12:23, Jer 5:1, Hes 6:11, 21:6, Upp 7:3.Herren sade till honom: "Gå igenom Jerusalems stad och sätt ett kors*9:4korsHebr. taw, den sista bokstaven i det hebreiska alfabetet. I dåtidens gammalhebreiska hade den formen av ett kors. Jfr 1 Mos 4:15, Upp 7:3. i pannan på dem som suckar och jämrar sig över alla de vidrigheter som görs därinne."

5 Till de andra hörde jag honom säga: "Följ honom in i staden och slå folket. Visa ingen skonsamhet och ha inget förbarmande! 6 *2 Krön 36:17, Jer 25:29, Hes 8:16, 1 Petr 4:17, Upp 9:4. Döda åldringar, unga män, unga kvinnor, späda barn och vuxna kvinnor. Ni ska döda för att förgöra, men rör ingen som har korset på sig. Då började de med de äldste som stod framför tempelhuset. 7 Han sade till dem: "Orena tempelbyggnaden och fyll förgårdarna med slagna. Dra ut!" Och de drog ut och slog folket i staden.

8 När de slog folket blev jag ensam kvar. Då föll jag ner på mitt ansikte och ropade: "O, Herre Gud! Tänker du förgöra allt som är kvar av Israel när du öser din vrede över Jerusalem?" 9 *2 Kung 21:16, Hes 7:23, 8:12, 11:6. Han sade till mig: "Is­raels och Judas missgärning är mycket, mycket stor. Landet är fullt av blodskulder och staden är full av orätt, för de säger: Herren har övergett landet, Herren ser det inte. 10 *Hes 5:11, 8:18, 11:21, 16:43. Därför ska inte heller jag visa något medlidande eller förbarmande, utan jag ska låta deras gärningar komma över deras egna huvuden."

11 Mannen som var klädd i linne­kläderna och hade skrivdonet vid sin höft kom nu tillbaka och med­dela­de: "Jag har gjort som du befallde mig."
