1 José se lançou sobre o rosto de seu pai, chorou sobre ele e o beijou.2 Ordenou a seus servos, os médicos, que embalsamassem a seu pai; e os médicos embalsamaram a Israel.3 Cumpriram-se-lhe quarenta dias, pois assim se cumprem os dias da embalsamação; e os egípcios choraram-no setenta dias.4 Acabados os dias de o chorarem, disse José à casa de Faraó: Se agora achei graça aos vossos olhos, rogo-vos que faleis aos ouvidos de Faraó:5 Meu pai me fez jurar, dizendo: Eis que eu morro; no meu sepulcro que fiz abrir para mim na terra de Canaã, ali me sepultarás. Agora, pois, deixa-me subir e sepultar meu pai, depois voltarei.6 Respondeu Faraó: Vai sepultar teu pai como ele te fez jurar.7 José subiu para sepultar a seu pai; e com ele subiram todos os servos de Faraó, os anciãos da sua casa, e todos os anciãos da terra do Egito,8 e toda a casa de José, e seus irmãos e a casa de seu pai; somente deixaram na terra de Gósen os seus pequeninos, os seus rebanhos e os seus gados.9 Subiram com ele tanto carros como cavaleiros; e houve um concurso mui grande.10 Vieram à eira de Atade, que está além do Jordão, e ali prantearam com mui grande e forte pranto sete dias; e fez José uma lamentação por seu pai.11 Tendo os moradores da terra, os cananeus, visto o pranto na eira de Atade, disseram: Grande pranto é este dos egípcios; pelo que o lugar foi chamado Abelmizraim, que está além do Jordão.12 Fizeram-lhe seus filhos como lhes havia ordenado:13 levaram-no para a terra de Canaã, e o sepultaram na cova no campo de Macpela, em frente de Manré, a qual Abraão comprou com o campo para posse de lugar de sepultura a Efrom heteu.14 Depois de haverem feito isto, voltou José para o Egito, ele, seus irmãos e todos os que com ele subiram para sepultar seu pai.15 Vendo os irmãos de José que seu pai tinha morrido, disseram: Porventura José nos aborrecerá, e nos retribuirá todo o mal que lhe fizemos.16 Mandaram, então, esta mensagem a José: Teu pai ordenou antes da sua morte, dizendo:17 Assim direis a José: Perdoa a transgressão de teus irmãos e o seu pecado, porque te fizeram mal. Agora, pois, rogamos-te que perdoes a transgressão dos servos do Deus de teu pai. José chorou enquanto lhe falavam.18 Vieram também seus irmãos, prostraram-se diante dele e disseram: Nós somos teus servos.19 Respondeu-lhes José: Não temais; acaso estou eu em lugar de Deus?20 Vós, na verdade, intentastes o mal contra mim; porém Deus o intentou para o bem, para fazer, como é agora, que se conserve muita gente em vida.21 Agora, pois, não temais; eu vos sustentarei a vós e a vossos filhinhos. Assim os consolou, e lhes falou ao coração.22 José habitou no Egito, ele e a casa de seu pai; e viveu cento e dez anos.23 Viu José os filhos de Efraim até a terceira geração; também os filhos de Maquir, filho de Manassés, nasceram sobre os joelhos de José.24 Disse José a seus irmãos: Eu morro; porém Deus certamente vos visitará, e vos fará subir desta terra para a terra que jurou a Abraão, a Isaque e a Jacó.25 José fez os filhos de Israel jurar, dizendo: Certamente Deus vos visitará, e fareis transportar deste lugar os meus ossos.26 Assim morreu José, tendo cento e dez anos de idade; embalsamaram-no e puseram-no num caixão no Egito.

1 Joseph threw himself on his father. He cried over him, and kissed him.2 Then Joseph gave orders to embalm his father’s body.3 It took forty days, which is the normal time for embalming. The Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.4 When the time of mourning was over, Joseph said to the king’s officials: »Please take this message to the king:5 »When my father was about to die, he made me promise him that I would bury him in the tomb that he had prepared in the land of Canaan. Please, let me go and bury my father. Then I will come back.«6 The king replied: »By all means go and bury your father, as you promised you would.«7 So Joseph went to bury his father. All the king’s officials, the senior men of his court, and all the leading men of Egypt went with Joseph.8 His family, including his brothers, and the rest of his father’s family all went with him. Only their small children and their sheep, goats, and cattle stayed in the region of Goshen.9 Men in chariots and men on horseback also went with him. It was a very large group.10 They mourned loudly for a long time at the threshing place at Atad east of the Jordan. Joseph performed mourning ceremonies for seven days.11 The citizens of Canaan saw those people mourning at Atad. They said: »What a solemn ceremony of mourning the Egyptians are holding!« That is why the place was named Abel-mizraim.12 Jacob’s sons did as he had commanded them.13 They carried his body to Canaan and buried it in the cave at Machpelah east of Mamre. He was buried in the field Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite for a burial ground.14 After the funeral, Joseph, his brothers, and everyone else returned to Egypt.15 After Jacob died, Joseph’s brothers said to each other: »What if Joseph still hates us and wants to get even with us for all the cruel things we did to him?«16 Thus they sent word to Joseph, saying: »Your father gave us orders before his death. He said,17 »‘You are to say to Joseph: »Let the wrongdoing of your brothers be overlooked, and the evil they did to you. If it is your pleasure, forgive the sin of the servants of your father’s God.« ’« Upon hearing these words Joseph was overcome with weeping.18 Then his brothers also came and immediately bowed down in front of him. »We are your slaves!« they said.19 Joseph replied to them: »Do not be afraid! I cannot take God’s place.20 »Even though you planned evil against me, God planned good to come out of it. This was to keep many people alive, as he is doing now.21 »You have nothing to fear. I will take care of you and your children.« So he reassured them with kind words that touched their hearts.22 Joseph continued to live in Egypt with his father’s family. He was a hundred and ten years old when he died.23 Joseph lived long enough to see Ephraim’s children and grandchildren. He also lived to see the children of Manasseh’s son Machir. He welcomed them into his family.24 Before Joseph died, he told his brothers: »I will not live much longer. God will take care of you. He will lead you out of Egypt to the land he promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.25 »Promise me that you will take my body with you when God leads you to that land.«26 Joseph died in Egypt at the age of one hundred and ten. His body was embalmed and put in a coffin.
