1 Ora a serpente era mais astuta que qualquer animal do campo que Deus Jeová tinha feito. Ela disse à mulher: É assim que Deus disse: Não comereis de toda a árvore do jardim?2 Respondeu a mulher à serpente: Do fruto das árvores do jardim podemos comer;3 mas do fruto da árvore que está no meio do jardim, disse Deus: Não comereis dele, nem nele tocareis, para que não morrais.4 Então a serpente disse à mulher: Certamente não morrereis;5 porque Deus sabe que no dia em que comerdes do fruto, abrir-se-vos-ão os olhos, e sereis como Deus, conhecendo o bem e o mal.6 Viu, pois, a mulher que a árvore era boa para comer, que era uma delícia para os olhos, e árvore desejável para dar entendimento; tomou do fruto dela e comeu; deu também a seu marido, e ele comeu.7 Foram abertos os olhos de ambos e, conhecendo que estavam nus, coseram folhas de figueira, e fizeram para si umas cintas.8 Ouviram o ruído de Deus Jeová que passeava pelo jardim ao fresco do dia, e esconderam-se o homem e sua mulher da presença de Deus Jeová entre as árvores do jardim.9 Deus Jeová chamou ao homem, e perguntou-lhe: Onde estás?10 Respondeu-lhe o homem: Ouvi a tua voz no jardim, e tive medo, porque estava nu; e escondi-me.11 Perguntou-lhe Deus: Quem te mostrou que estavas nu? Comeste da árvore de que te ordenei que não comesses?12 Respondeu o homem: A mulher que me deste por companheira deu-me da árvore, e eu comi.13 Perguntou Deus Jeová à mulher: Que é isto que fizeste? Respondeu a mulher: A serpente enganou-me, e eu comi.14 Então disse Deus Jeová à serpente: Porquanto assim o fizeste, maldita és tu dentre todos os animais domésticos e dentre todos os animais do campo; sobre o teu ventre andarás de rastos, o pó comerás todos dos dias da tua vida.15 Porei inimizade entre ti e a mulher, e entre a tua semente e a sua semente; esta te ferirá a cabeça, e tu lhe ferirás o calcanhar.16 Disse ele à mulher: Multiplicarei grandemente o teu sofrer e a tua conceição; em dor darás à luz filhos; o teu desejo será para teu marido, e ele te dominará.17 E a Adão disse: Porque escutaste a voz de tua mulher, e comeste da árvore de que te ordenei que não comesses; maldita é a terra por tua causa: em fadiga tirarás dela o sustento todos os dias da tua vida.18 Ela te produzirá também espinhos e abrolhos, e comerás as ervas do campo.19 No suor do teu rosto comerás o teu pão, até que te tornes à terra, pois dela foste tomado: porquanto tu és pó, e em pó te hás de tornar.20 Chamou o homem à sua mulher Eva, porque era a mãe de todos os viventes.21 Fez Deus Jeová para Adão e para sua mulher túnicas de peles, e os vestiu.22 Disse Deus Jeová: Eis que o homem se tem tornado como um de nós, conhecendo o bem e o mal. Agora para que ele não estenda a mão, e tome também da árvore da vida, e coma, e viva eternamente,23 Deus Jeová o enviou para fora do jardim do Éden, a fim de cultivar a terra de que havia sido tomado.24 Assim expulsou ao homem; e ao oriente do jardim do Éden pôs os querubins e o chamejar de uma espada que se volvia por todos os lados, para guardar o caminho da árvore da vida.

1 Now the serpent was craftier than any of the wild animals Jehovah God had made. He said to the woman: »Did God really say, you must not eat from any tree in the garden?«2 The woman said to the serpent: »We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden.3 ‘»However, God did say: ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden. You must not touch it, or you will die.’«4 »You will not die,« the serpent said to the woman.5 »God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened. Then you will be like God, knowing good and evil.«6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened. They realized they were naked. They sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.8 The man and his wife heard the sound voice of Jehovah God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day. They hid from Jehovah, among the trees of the garden.9 But Jehovah God called to the man: »Where are you?«10 He Adam answered: »I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.«11 And he said: »Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?«12 Adam said: »The woman you put here with me gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.«13 Then Jehovah God said to the Eve: »What is this you have done?« The woman answered: »The serpent deceived me, and I ate.«14 So Jehovah God said to the serpent: »Because you have done this you are cursed above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.15 »And I will put enmity hostilityhatred between you and the woman, and between your offspring seed and hers. He will bruise overwhelmcrush you in the head, and you will bruise overwhelmcrush him in the heel.« (Romans 16:20)16 He said to the woman: »I will greatly increase your pains in childbirth; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.«17 He said to Adam: »Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.18 »It will produce thorns and thistles for you. You will eat the plants of the field.19 »You will eat your food by the sweat of your brow until you return to the ground. You came from the ground. For dust you are and to dust you will return.«20 Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living.21 Jehovah God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.22 Jehovah said: »The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.«23 Therefore Jehovah God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
