1 Hear the word which Yahweh speaks to you, house of Israel! 2 Yahweh says,
"Don’t learn the way of the nations,
and don’t be dismayed at the signs of the sky;
for the nations are dismayed at them.
3 For the customs of the peoples are vanity;
for one cuts a tree out of the forest,
the work of the hands of the workman with the ax.
4 They deck it with silver and with gold.
They fasten it with nails and with hammers,
so that it can’t move.
5 They are like a palm tree, of turned work,
and don’t speak.
They must be carried,
because they can’t move.
Don’t be afraid of them;
for they can’t do evil,
neither is it in them to do good."
6 There is no one like you, Yahweh.
You are great,
and your name is great in might.
7 Who shouldn’t fear you,
King of the nations?
For it belongs to you.
Because among all the wise men of the nations,
and in all their royal estate,
there is no one like you.
8 But they are together brutish and foolish,
instructed by idols!
It is just wood.
9 There is silver beaten into plates, which is brought from Tarshish,
and gold from Uphaz,
the work of the engraver and of the hands of the goldsmith.
Their clothing is blue and purple.
They are all the work of skillful men.
10 But Yahweh is the true God.
He is the living God,
and an everlasting King.
At his wrath, the earth trembles.
The nations aren’t able to withstand his indignation.
11 "You shall say this to them: ‘The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth will perish from the earth, and from under the heavens.’"
12 God has made the earth by his power.
He has established the world by his wisdom,
and by his understanding has he stretched out the heavens.
13 When he utters his voice,
the waters in the heavens roar,
and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth.
He makes lightnings for the rain,
and brings the wind out of his treasuries.
14 Every man has become brutish and without knowledge.
Every goldsmith is disappointed by his engraved image;
for his molten image is falsehood,
and there is no breath in them.
15 They are vanity, a work of delusion.
In the time of their visitation they will perish.
16 The portion of Jacob is not like these;
for he is the maker of all things;
and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance.
Yahweh of Armies is his name.
17 Gather up your wares out of the land,
you who live under siege.
18 For Yahweh says,
"Behold, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this time,
and will distress them, that they may feel it."
19 Woe is me because of my injury!
My wound is serious;
but I said,
"Truly this is my grief, and I must bear it."
20 My tent has been destroyed,
and all my cords are broken.
My children have gone away from me, and they are no more.
There is no one to spread my tent any more,
to set up my curtains.
21 For the shepherds have become brutish,
and have not inquired of Yahweh.
Therefore they have not prospered,
and all their flocks have scattered.
22 The voice of news, behold, it comes,
and a great commotion out of the north country,
to make the cities of Judah a desolation,
a dwelling place of jackals.
23 Yahweh, I know that the way of man is not in himself.
It is not in man who walks to direct his steps.
24 Yahweh, correct me, but gently;
not in your anger,
lest you reduce me to nothing.
25 Pour out your wrath on the nations that don’t know you,
and on the families that don’t call on your name;
for they have devoured Jacob.
Yes, they have devoured him, consumed him,
and have laid waste his habitation.

kaua anō e wehi i ngā tohu o te rangi;
e wehi ana hoki ngā tauiwi i aua mea.
3 He mea teka noa hoki ngā tikanga a ngā iwi:
e tapahia ana hoki e tētahi he rākau i roto i te ngahere,
kāhore ia he kupu;
me amo,
he kore nō rātou e haere.
Kaua e wehi i a rātou,
nō te mea e kore e taea e rātou te kino,
kāhore hoki e āhei i a rātou te mea i te pai."
6 Kāhore rawa he rite mōu, e Ihowā;
he nui koe, he nui anō tōu ingoa i runga i te kaha.
7 Ko wai e kore e wehi i a koe, e te Kīngi o ngā iwi?
He tika hoki tēnā ki a koe.
Nō te mea i roto i ngā tāngata whakaaro nui katoa o ngā iwi,
i roto i ō rātou kīngitanga katoa,
kāhore he rite mōu.
8 Huihuia rātou, he pōauau rawa, he wairangi;
ko tā ngā whakapakoko e whakaako ai,
he rākau tonu ia!
9 E maua mai ana he hiriwa pāraharaha i Tarahihi,
he kōura i Upata.
He mahi nā te kaimahi nā ngā ringa anō o te kaiwhakarewa kōura:
he purū, he pāpura ō rātou kākahu;
he mea mahi katoa nā te hunga tohunga.
10 Ko Ihowā ia te Atua pono;
ko ia te Atua ora, he kīngi pūmau tonu.
Ka riri ia, ka wiri te whenua,
e kore anō ngā iwi e kaha ake ina āritarita ia.
11 "Kia pēnei tā koutou kī atu ki a rātou: ‘Ko ngā atua kīhai nei i hanga i te rangi, i te whenua, ka ngaro i runga i te whenua, i raro atu anō hoki i ngā rangi.’ "
12 Nāna i hanga te whenua, nā tōna kaha hoki;
ko te ao he mea whakapūmau nā ōna whakaaro nui;
ko ngā rangi he mea hora nā tōna mātauranga.
13 Ka puaki tōna reo, he haruru wai kei ngā rangi,
e meinga ana e ia ngā kohu kia pupū ake i ngā pito o te whenua.
E hangā ana e ia ngā uira mō te ua,
e whakaputaina mai ana te hau i roto i ōna whare taonga.
14 Pōauau kau ngā tāngata katoa, ā, kāhore he mōhio;
ko ngā kaiwhakarewa kōura katoa whakamā iho i te whakapakoko.
He mea teka hoki tāna i whakarewa ai,
kāhore hoki he wairua i roto.
15 He horihori kau rātou, he mahi pōhēhē;
i te wā e pā ai ia ki a rātou ka ngaro.
16 Kāhore e rite ki ērā te wāhi i a Hākopa;
ko ia hoki te kaiwhakaahua o ngā mea katoa;
ko Īharaira hoki te iwi o tōna kāinga tupu,
ko Ihowā o ngā mano tōna ingoa.
Te Manenetanga e Haere mai nei
17 Kohikohia āu mea i te whenua,
e koe e noho nā i te pā e whakapaea ana.
18 Ko te kupu hoki tēnei a Ihowā:
"Tēnei ahau te piupiu atu nei i ngā tāngata o te whenua
i tēnei wā,
te whakatupu kino nei hoki i a rātou,
kia kitea ai e rātou."
19 Auē te mate i ahau,
mamae rawa tōku marūtanga.
Otiia, kua mea nei ahau, "He pono nōku tēnei mate,
me whakamanawanui."
20 Kua pāhuatia tōku tēneti,
ko āku aho motumotu katoa.
Kua riro atu āku tamariki i tōku taha, kua kore;
kāhore ake he tangata hei whakamārō i tōku tēneti,
hei whakaara i ōku kākahu ārai.
21 Kua pōauau nei hoki ngā hēpara;
kīhai a Ihowā i rapua e rātou;
nā reira i kore ai e tika tā rātou,
ka marara hoki ā rātou kāhui katoa.
22 Nanā, te haere mai nei te reo o ngā kōrero,
nui atu te whakaohooho nō te whenua ki te raki,
hei mea i ngā pā o Hūrā hei ururua, hei nohoanga,
mō ngā kīrehe mohoao.
23 E mōhio ana anō ahau, e Ihowā, kāhore o te tangata ara i a ia ake anō;
kāhore hoki i te tangata e hāereere nei māna
e whakatikatika ōna hīkoinga.
24 Pākia ahau, e Ihowā, me te whakariterite anō ia;
kauaka ina riri koe, kei kāhore ahau i a koe.
25 Ringihia atu tōu riri ki ngā tauiwi kāhore nei e mātau ki a koe,
ki ngā hapū kāhore nei e karanga ki tōu ingoa.
Kua pau hoki a Hākopa i a rātou,
āe rā, pau rawa, mōtī rawa,
ko tōna nohoanga hoki whakaururuatia ana e rātou.
