1 Josiah kept a Passover to Yahweh in Jerusalem. They killed the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month. 2 He set the priests in their offices and encouraged them in the service of Yahweh’s house. 3 He said to the Levites who taught all Israel, who were holy to Yahweh, "Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel built. It will no longer be a burden on your shoulders. Now serve Yahweh your God and his people Israel. 4 Prepare yourselves after your fathers’ houses by your divisions, according to the writing of David king of Israel, and according to the writing of Solomon his son. 5 Stand in the holy place according to the divisions of the fathers’ houses of your brothers the children of the people, and let there be for each a portion of a fathers’ house of the Levites. 6 Kill the Passover lamb, sanctify yourselves, and prepare for your brothers, to do according to Yahweh’s word by Moses."

7 Josiah gave to the children of the people, of the flock, lambs and young goats, all of them for the Passover offerings, to all who were present, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thousand bulls. These were of the king’s substance. 8 His princes gave a free will offering to the people, to the priests, and to the Levites. Hilkiah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, the rulers of God’s house, gave to the priests for the Passover offerings two thousand six hundred small livestock, and three hundred head of cattle. 9 Conaniah also, and Shemaiah and Nethanel, his brothers, and Hashabiah, Jeiel, and Jozabad, the chiefs of the Levites, gave to the Levites for the Passover offerings five thousand small livestock and five hundred head of cattle.

10 So the service was prepared, and the priests stood in their place, and the Levites by their divisions, according to the king’s commandment. 11 They killed the Passover lambs, and the priests sprinkled the blood which they received from their hands, and the Levites skinned them. 12 They removed the burnt offerings, that they might give them according to the divisions of the fathers’ houses of the children of the people, to offer to Yahweh, as it is written in the book of Moses. They did the same with the cattle. 13 They roasted the Passover with fire according to the ordinance. They boiled the holy offerings in pots, in cauldrons, and in pans, and carried them quickly to all the children of the people. 14 Afterward they prepared for themselves and for the priests, because the priests the sons of Aaron were busy with offering the burnt offerings and the fat until night. Therefore the Levites prepared for themselves and for the priests the sons of Aaron. 15 The singers, the sons of Asaph, were in their place, according to the commandment of David, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun the king’s seer; and the gatekeepers were at every gate. They didn’t need to depart from their service, because their brothers the Levites prepared for them.

16 So all the service of Yahweh was prepared the same day, to keep the Passover, and to offer burnt offerings on Yahweh’s altar, according to the commandment of King Josiah. 17 The children of Israel who were present kept the Passover at that time, and the feast of unleavened bread seven days. 18 There was no Passover like that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet, nor did any of the kings of Israel keep such a Passover as Josiah kept—with the priests, the Levites, and all Judah and Israel who were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 19 This Passover was kept in the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah.

20 After all this, when Josiah had prepared the temple, Neco king of Egypt went up to fight against Carchemish by the Euphrates, and Josiah went out against him. 21 But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, "What have I to do with you, you king of Judah? I come not against you today, but against the house with which I have war. God has commanded me to make haste. Beware that it is God who is with me, that he not destroy you."

22 Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and didn’t listen to the words of Neco from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo. 23 The archers shot at King Josiah; and the king said to his servants, "Take me away, because I am seriously wounded!"

24 So his servants took him out of the chariot, and put him in the second chariot that he had, and brought him to Jerusalem; and he died, and was buried in the tombs of his fathers. All Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah. 25 Jeremiah lamented for Josiah, and all the singing men and singing women spoke of Josiah in their lamentations to this day; and they made them an ordinance in Israel. Behold, they are written in the lamentations. 26 Now the rest of the acts of Josiah and his good deeds, according to that which is written in Yahweh’s law, 27 and his acts, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah.

Josia firar påskhögtiden

1 *2 Mos 12:6, 2 Kung 23:21f, 2 Krön 30:1f. Josia firade Herrens påsk i Jerusalem. Man slaktade påskalammet på fjortonde dagen i första månaden. 2 Han fastställde prästernas åligganden och styrkte dem till tjänstgöringen i Herrens hus. 3 *4 Mos 7:9. Han sade till leviterna som undervisade hela Israel och som var helgade åt Herren: "Sätt den heliga arken i det hus som Salomo, Davids son, Israels kung, har byggt. Den ska inte mer vara en börda på era axlar. Tjäna nu Herren er Gud och hans folk Israel. 4 Gör er redo efter era familjer, i era avdelningar, så som Israels kung David och hans son Salomo har föreskrivit. 5 Ställ upp er i helgedomen, ordnade efter era bröders familjer i hela folket, så att en avdelning av en levitisk familj kommer på varje grupp. 6 Slakta påskalammet och helga er och tillaga det för era bröder. Gör efter Herrens ord genom Mose."

7 *2 Krön 30:24. Och Josia offrade småboskap för hela folket, dels lamm och dels killingar, 30 000 djur, allt till påskoffer åt dem som var närvarande, samt tjurar, 3 000 djur. Detta togs från kungens privata egendom. 8 Hans furstar gav också av fri vilja offergåvor åt folket och åt prästerna och leviterna. Hilkia, Sakarja och Jehiel, furstarna i Guds hus, gav åt prästerna 2 600 lamm och killingar samt tjurar, 300 djur, till påskoffer. 9 Och Konanja med Shemaja och Netanel, hans bröder, samt Hashabja, Jegiel och Josabad, de främsta bland leviterna, gav som offergåva åt leviterna 5 000 lamm och killingar till påskoffer, samt dessutom tjurar, 500 djur. 10 På så sätt blev det ordnat för gudstjänsten.

Prästerna och leviterna inställde sig till tjänstgöring på sina platser och efter sina avdelningar, som kungen hade befallt. 11 *2 Krön 29:22, 34, 30:16. De slaktade påskalammet, och prästerna stänkte med blodet som räcktes åt dem, medan leviterna flådde lammen. 12 *3 Mos 3:14f. Och de avskilde brännoffersstyckena och delade ut dem åt folket efter deras familjer, för att de skulle offra dem åt Herren, så som det var föreskrivet i Mose bok. På samma sätt gjorde de också med tjurarna. 13 *2 Mos 12:8f. Och de stekte påskalammet på eld på föreskrivet sätt. Men köttet från gemenskapsoffret kokade de i grytor, pannor och kittlar och skyndade sig att dela ut det till allt folket. 14 Sedan lagade de till åt sig själva och åt prästerna, för prästerna, Arons söner, var upptagna ända till natten med att offra brännoffret och fettstyckena. Därför måste leviterna laga till både åt sig själva och åt prästerna, Arons söner. 15 *1 Krön 25:1f. Sångarna, Asafs ättlingar, stod på sin plats, som David, Asaf, Heman och kungens siare Jedutun hade befallt, och dörrvakterna stod var och en vid sin port. De behövde inte gå ifrån sin tjänstgöring, eftersom deras bröder leviterna lagade till åt dem.

16 Så blev den dagen allt ordnat för Herrens tjänst, så att man firade påskhögtid och offrade brännoffer på Herrens altare, så som kung Josia hade befallt. 17 *2 Krön 30:21. De av Israels barn som var närvarande höll nu påskhögtid och det osyrade brödets högtid i sju dagar. 18 *2 Kung 23:21, 2 Krön 30:26. En påskhögtid som denna hade inte firats i Israel sedan profeten Samuels tid. Ingen av Israels kungar hade hållit en sådan påskhögtid som nu firades av Josia med prästerna och leviterna, hela Juda och dem av Israel som var närvarande samt Jerusalems invånare. 19 I Josias artonde regeringsår hölls denna påskhögtid.

Josia dör vid Megiddo

20 *2 Kung 23:29f. Efter allt detta, när Josia hade fått templet i ordning, drog Egyptens kung Neko*35:20Egyptens kung NekoNeko II (610-595 f Kr) ville år 609 hjälpa de sista kvarvarande assyrierna i Harran i norra Syrien, som var trängda av babylonierna efter Nineves fall 612 f Kr (se Nahums bok). Josia stödde babylonierna liksom hans farfar Hiskia (2 Kung 20:12 med not). upp för att strida vid Karkemish som ligger vid Eufrat. Josia drog ut mot honom.

21 Då skickade Neko bud till honom och sade: "Vad har jag med dig att göra, du Juda kung? Det är inte mot dig jag kommer i dag, utan mot den fiende jag är i krig med. Gud har befallt mig att skynda. Sluta stå emot Gud, som är med mig! Akta dig så att han inte förgör dig."

22 Men i stället för att vända om och lämna honom i fred förklädde Josia sig och gick ut för att strida mot honom, utan att höra på Nekos ord som kom från Guds mun. Bågskyttarnas skott träffade kung Josia, och kungen sade till sina män: "Bär bort mig! Jag är svårt sårad."

24 *Sak 12:11f. Då bar hans män bort honom från vagnen och satte honom i hans andra vagn och förde honom till Jerusalem. Och han dog och blev begravd där hans fäder var begravda. Hela Juda och Jerusalem sörjde Josia.

Sorgen över Josia, den siste rättfärdige kungen, var ett starkt minne även hundra år senare (Sak 12:11). över Josia. Alla sångare och sångerskor talade om Josia i sina sorgesånger och gör det än i dag. Dessa sånger blev allmänt sjungna i Israel, och de finns upptecknade bland "Sorgesångerna".
